When I was a youngster , 50's and 60's , the story told about the miracle staircase was that when the church was nearly complete they could not figure out anything but a ladder to reach the choir loft , which was not good for nuns in habits . An old itenerent carpenter happened by on his burro and offered to build something . It was done quickly with no one watching and he slipped away without a word or asking for his pay and when the sisters went in they found the staircase . There were no screws , nails or glue , only wooden pegs holding together the seven inner and nine outer stringers . Absolutely love that I knew Santa Fe , Taos , Chimayo , Los Alamos , Old Town Albuquerque and that whole area back then . Different world now . Great video , enjoying these videos from my old stomping grounds .

I agree, it was remarkably empty on this video normally it is packed with tourists and prices are high. I have lived there most of my life, back when I was a kid, you had very few tourist shops with woolworths and Safeway and sears downtown, free parking. The locals hung out on the plaza and shopped downtown. It is very different now. What is the same are the amazing blue skies fresh air. The chile ristras are real. By the way, I grew up on Canyon Road. I remember my neighbors mixing up the adobe to build their houses. There was a grocery store and a gas station as well as Claudes bar on Canyon road. My house was build with adobe decades ago and has vegas, latillas and mud stucco. The architecture is not Santa Fe “style” it is Santa Fe.

Wow! Back in the early 90s when we lived there, there were a lot more vendors at the Palace. I think the lack of $$ is hitting everywhere, it's a very expensive town. Yes, real peppers. I miss the clouds and the sunsets, most beautiful of anywhere.

Your walking tours are always awesome, filled with fun facts, history and scenes that evoke the feeling of having visited myself. The original classic music was a nice touch, too. Robert Santa Fe New Mexico is awesome the adobe style homes and buildings are my favorite architecture. You do a great job in your traveling videos. We're hooked. 2 questions: 1 did you have to get a drone license to fly the Mavic? 2. Find any Cuban croquettes or potato balls along the way? I go to vickey bakery when I am in Miami. My favorite steak sandwich comes from Morro Castle in Hialeah 😅

Robert. Imagine my surprise when I saw you ate at the thunderbird. I ate there 25 years ago when it was the ore house. It was very good then. I was further surprised when you ate outside on the second floor at the same table I did! It was February then and the heater was on. Saw cowboys on horseback in the town square. Great trip.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Santa Fe but there was a restaurant/bar with a piano in it. Think name was Vanessie’s? It seemed to be west of the downtown area I want to say along Canyon Rd. Had good food and drinks along with a great pianist. Many of the locals went there. It was also a gathering place for folks after attending the opera. The Santa Fe Opera is beautiful open Arena with the stars as your roof. World class performers would come and perform. Some will go to Vanesies afterwards for food, drink and sometimes perform impromptu for those there.

I was in Santa Fe July 5. I was intending on staying and exploring a few days while camping in dispersed camping. It was too crowded for me after spending nearly 2 weeks at various canyons. And I couldn't figure out where to park or what to do with my dogs, so I just left. I stayed at a really nice core of engineer campground called overlook campground about 30 minutes away. I will go back again to explore when I have my camper with me and can leave the dogs in the camper with the air conditioning on and not on a holiday weekend. I want to do the museums.

Robert, that house can't be the oldest in the US. I know of one in Connecticut that is from the 1630's, called the Henry Whitfield House, (very cool house to see!). There may be even older ones than that. Still very interesting place, there in Santa Fe, but not the oldest in the country.

@@FlourishingLove I looked up the information on the house. Says that it’s hard to tell how old it is. But does mention that there’s an area of the house that may suggest some of it may of been built before 1500’s when the Spanish conquistadors came through. So it’s got a varied history. Did find out that the Capitol building maybe 1608? When built.

I wouldn't say "extremely" liberal, but yes, it definitely leans Democratic. That's part of the reason I moved here 25 years ago. It has less than 1/8 the population of San Francisco, and just as in San Francisco, there are lots of "regular people," including many who can trace their families back for centuries.
