As a retired LEO and one who handled 100’s of accidents I’d like to say two things. Firstly, thank you for giving the officers props for being good and doing their job properly. People will quickly criticize us, but few actually commend or thank them. Yes when they screw up they should be held accountable. But just like everyone else in the world, they are human and make mistakes. Secondly, contact your INS co, give them the info from the police and the subject who hit your trailer. Let the INS co handle it. You pay insurance for a reason, let them do the work and take care of this. Save yourself from getting annoyed by doing the leg work. Good luck and be safe.

I’ll second that. You have the tag of the car that backed into your trailer. Hopefully the police report will have the names and contact info of the witnesses. Send it all to your INS company and they’ll handle it.

I agree as a retired LEO as well. In situations such as this my officer would always do a property damage report with all witness statements and photos so that the victim can turn it over to their insurance.

Hey Tall, glad to see it didn’t get you down. Just at a glance in the video, only thing structurally damaged is the aluminum square tubes and sheet metal. Insurance will more than likely just replace the door. Stay positive!

Tall, I have owned numerous trailers like yours. Everything from a 7x12 to an 8.5x20. The damage looks bad but it looks to be only cosmetic, not structural. By structural, I mean no damage to the trailer frame. Have a safe trip home!

After seeing it where it broke the plywood it was a pretty hard hit. I build utility trailers but I know a little about the enclosed trailers. They or their insurance company would be paying for me a new trailer!

Get the other vehicle’s information and owner’ information and if you receive a complaint number from the PD. You should forward that to your insurance company along with any statements and or video if available. Your insurance company take care of everything else. If determined they are at fault then your insurance should go after them. Also in reference to the officers they could have done an investigation to at a minimum get the information on the tag displayed on that vehicle.

That is why I put a bunch of straps (6-8) when hauling. Good endless loop ratchet straps at that. People say you only need 2 lil straps well 2 lil straps could have easily popped with that impact. I always tell them that I want enough straps that if King Kong picks up that trailer and shakes it I want the bikes not to move.

Hi Tall, I just watched this video yesterday [11/12), and I am glad things worked out as they did. I wanted to offer the suggestion of adding a dash cam for your truck and possibly the trailer. If the hotel camera had not caught this, only God knows how it would have turned out! Stay safe and stay in His Hands! NG
