Basicly the same yeah. NemID was initially developed as banking security by 'Danske Bank' but was quickly expanded and incorporated into all public services and all banks. If you want to use your debit card online you have to authenticate using NemID , if you want to access your public information you have to use NemID and if you want to talk to a public official you have to use NemID. There are differences to the card and the app. With the card you get a 4 digit code that you have to match with your card and enter a 6 digit verification, with the app you have to log in to it and verify with a swipe. Very easy to use all in all.

NemID is the goddamned bane of my existence. It’s easy to use but when it really breaks there is no help line to call! 🤣 I had my password randomly expire, so I was blocked out of my banking app, my bills randomly stopped auto-paying and loan sharks started calling and threatening me because I accidentally had not paid my otherwise well kept loans. The only solution was to get my dad to make an appointment, vouch for my identity, bring my baptism certificate (!) and then I had to tell a clerk at the ‘borgerservice’ (citizen center) which country I was born in and the ages of all of my children, despite being born in the same town and having zero kids! Just to be able to set a new goddamned password! The fact that you guys got actual help is great to hear but also exceptional! It took me two weeks of trying and failing, because my appointment bookings kept bouncing... because I was not registered as a citizen all of a sudden!

In Sweden BankID is a similar service used almost everywhere (others like exist also). So for me to login to the tax office or some other entity could go something like this * Log into my phone using fingerprint * Open the BankID app * Scan a QR code on the monitor generated by the initiated ID request This ensures you don't fall victim to som scammer calling you and asking to authenticate and then on their end initiate a login to your bank on their end. Since you have to be the one initiating the login in order to see the QR code * See the details of the request on the screen "i.e. The Tax Office want's you to authenticate" so you know it's from the excpected party. * Authenticate through the app with another eight digit pin (or fingerprint if enabled) Stuff like this is why you can be pretty certain about the party you are communicating with and could do stuff like online voting for instance if you wanted to. That this is solved in many parts of the world but called impossible in the US makes you wonder.

The centralised nature of NemID is definitely a good thing usability-wise. It also poses a security risk, though. NemID can (and sometimes must) be used for many things other than just logging in to websites (including banks); e.g. for signing legal documents, including to sell your house. NemID is actually based on public and private keys, and in a setup like that, YOU as the user would normally be the only one to hold your own private key. This is not the case with NemID, though. All private keys are stored by Nets, which poses (at least) two problems: First of all, it's a giant target for hackers, because you only have to hack one place, and all of a sudden you have 3+ million people's private keys. Second, as Nets holds your private key, they could authenticate/authorise actions on your behalf (sell your house, send legally binding e-mail signed with your key), and there would be no way for you to prove that you were not the one to perform the actions. Before NemID, we actually did hold our own private keys. The private key was even generated on the local computer. But it was just way too difficult for "normies" to use, so it was never really widely adopted. NemID made it much more usable (well, making it basically mandatory by law helps too, of course), but private keys really shouldn't be stored centrally.

As someone who has worked in FinTech I can tell you EXACTLY why the US does not not have anything like NemID while pretty all of Europe has it. There is actually a kind of dark side to this. Reality is that consumer rights are quite weak in the US. If somebody access your bank account in the US and steals your money, then you will most likely get the blame. The banks don't hold much responsibility. US laws tend to side with big business. You will somehow have to prove this was not your fault, which can be difficult. In Europe the roles are swapped. Consumer rights, especially in Nordic countries are very strong. That means that if somebody use your bank account illegally, the bank has to prove that you didn't keep your login safe. This difference created a very strong incentive in Europe to create two-factor authentication systems for banks, because security breaches would quickly become an economic expensive for European banks. The US had no such incentive because it is the consumers who will have to take the hit most of the time. However this is going to change in the US as well, or may already have changed. I have worked with companies here in Europe trying to introduce two-factor authentication to American banking system because they are going to need it when government applies stricter regulations.

what we had before nemid. was actually on for the banks. I cant remember what was used for the public services. but you had to get a special one time code when calling the bank or something. that we could use to create our login for the bank. that would then create a hidden file on your system you had to select when loging in to the bank account. so you could mostly only login from that one computer. so nemid was a huge improvement.
@Softpaw19963 жыл бұрын
yes i remember the file thing. My parents had that. you actually got a temporary file on your computer just to login. It was a hassle.

We even have drivers license as an app - but at this time it only works in Denmark - it requires a danish drivers license and ditto passport as the picture is imported from the pasport initially

I also find the lack of security on card payments in the US is strange (no pin, just signature) for large payments.
@TravelinYoung3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I didn't even get into that. When in the US, there would be fraud one of my cards at least once a year. It is ridiculous how easy it is.

nem-id has been around for longer i would believe. what steam has isn't what Nem-id is. steam has 2fa where nemid is a whole seperate system.

Fun fact: any danish registrered company can use NEMID for authentication, without any restrictions, as long as they do not require access to your CPR number (Social Security Number equivalent). if you need to access the CPR number, you need to pay, and undergo a vetting process. see biltema's homepage for example... they allow google, facebook, and nemid as oauth providers...

Finally one of the videos I have asked about for some time 😁. Btw with all the times you said two factor authentication it could just as well have been a giveaway to the person who counted all the times it was said😂. Also good you liked the Kaj Kage A shame you probably won't understand the songs from Kaj og Andrea

Just to clarify a little - it may have been said in the comments already :) It's a centralized system supplied by the state, but it's a system to verify that you are you and it can only be done with the CPR (or username if enabled) and a password. Then you have to supply the key from the card or authorise with the app. It is used for banking, everything the public sector like hospitals etc. It can also be used as a digital signature if for instance the bank sends digital documents that you need to sign - this can be done with the nemid. Now, it is also used to verify online purchases to avoid fraud, so if you buy on the internet it will take you to a page asking you to verify your identity. It is also used as access to your digital mailbox supplied by the state as well, to give you a secure place where all public (and more an more private) mail can be send, such as confirmation of moving address, an overview of your banking the past month etc.
@mrki723 жыл бұрын
It isn't only CPR that you can log in with using nemID (not sure about username possibility). You can also log in with the number of your key code card and your password.

Great video. The Nem-ID thing might be a little annoying since you have to do that extra step, but it is likely worth it in todays world. Important extra info for people outside Denmark: 1: It is now required for all e-shopping here that payment uses the extra Nem-ID steps. 2: The whole Nem-ID thing is also tied to the E-box. Every dane have an E-box (its the law). ALL - and I repeat ALL communication from the state, city, bank, doctor and so on goes there. It is like an extra secure email. It also means that unless you got special exception, you ONLY get digital documents - no paper.

Listen guys, it's totally okay to be tired of marzipan in Danish cakes, I mean many of us don't even eat those cakes because of the marzipan. There is nothing wrong with marzipan, but its just in EVERYTHING here in Denmark. Honest opinions, instead of the never ending amazement with everything Danish would be a better approach...

Interesting to hear your point of view on this subject. I am Swedish living in Denmark, and I think there is a slightly better version in Sweden, called BankId. One step less. With NemId you login first and then accept. With BankId you skip the first step and accept the request with your login. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts, as Americans, on e-boks. This feels like a really important step to have less paper documents, receiving your mail in your private inbox, from banks, officials etc. I really like it. Hope you are enjoying your stay in Denmark. /Jessica

Is it sort of what we have in Sweden? -The "BankID" or "Mobilt BankID". The app is fantastic and hooks into basically every purchase I make. I put in my personal security number at the checkout and it instantly pops up in my app, at least online. With the app I can now use fingerprint to identify myself and it made everything hassle free.

So interesting watching this video, it is indeed something most Take for granted... if you could change just one thing with NemID, Eboks or other public services online, what would it be?
@papaquonis3 жыл бұрын
Two factor identification is basically a necessity in this modern world. I also recommend using a password manager, which makes it much more likely that you not only remember all your passwords as well as using very secure and unique passwords. My password manager also lets me know if there's been security breaches at any of the sites where I have a user account and password. The last thing to consider is using a VPN. If you're using all of these, you're definitely much less likely to become a victim of online fraud or hacking.

Now there is a new version right around the corner called MitID (My ID), that's even better. The card is gone and with the app it's actually three layer authentication, because you usually have the phone password protected as well. The new system will let employers tie your personal ID to your work ID so you only have to use the one, but IT systems will be sure that it's actually you that is logged on. That also means that because they can be sure that you are the one who's logged in in the first place, they don't have to put extra security on every piece of software, they can just log you in again automatically. The difference for you as a citizen will be minimal though.

"...that people probably take for granted, cause if you never lived out of Denmark...." If you are old enough NemID still feels like a new thing, that you do not take for granted (it started July 1st 2010, that's just 3-4 years ago right?)

Such an important topic to talk about. NemID is also used for purchases online in Danish online stores, which makes it virtually imposible to steal a Credit card and use it in danish online shops. You'd need to steal the credit card and the nemID card(wallet) that is doable and why you should not carry NemID in your wallet. OR in the case with the NemID app: The phone, which is also locked with a different code, which mean for mine, a patern code for the phone, an app code for the app and a code for the NemID system on the webpage.

Digital signatur where nemID is version 2.0 was invented by PBS, DM data, KMD and TDC and owned by TDC, this was back in 2002/2003, then in 2010 Nets came with the NemID solution since the Digital signatur wasn’t Secure enough. So no Banks was behind this. MobilePay on the other hand was done mainly by Danske Bank but is it’s own Company now. SWIFT was a cooperation between the largest Banks in Denmark but after Danske Bank broke out due to there mobile pay solution, SWIFT died in Denmark even though the solutions was different, so now we have Mobile pay in DK and SWIFT in Sweden, Finland and Norway.

I think some times we take it for granted here in Denmark. It is amazing how many systems can integrate to it, so if you wanna see your taxes, bank account, parking licenses, all official mail (which isn't sent in paper version anymore unless you are digitally exempt) etc. It just works so well, and definitely with the app authentication integration (which is a relatively new option, before it was just the paper version) without having to create accounts for everything, is just so nice And +1 for the Kaj kage haha. Basically the official meme mascot of the denmark subreddit :D
