Hi there Steve and thanks so much for watching our British Airways Economy Class Flight Review. As mentioned in the video the staff were friendly and professional but the lack of a complimentary beverage, very limited legroom and an extra charge to check luggage in was a disappointment. We were both left wondering why we should choose to fly with British Airways rather than with Norwegian (first choice low cost carrier), Easy Jet or Ryanair? We have heard complaints, here on KZbin, similar to ours and in our opinion British Airways should focus on delivering a better flight experience rather than trying to be a low cost carrier. The reason why we chose BA was because we wanted a "better" economy class flight experience rather than the a low cost airline one. We do believe that there is still a market for economy class customers who do not want to fly low cost (lowest price possible). During the late 80´s and 90´s I (Maxi) flew both long haul and short haul with BA and those journeys were memorable and enjoyable, and it was a pleasure to fly BA! We look forward to getting the chance to do a Flight Review of the British Airways Long Haul experience in the future but from what we hear on KZbin we may be disappointed there too, I hope not, it would be a pity! Thanks for sharing the airport and flight experience! I've always really enjoyed my flights with British Airways, but that is a real shame to hear they no longer offer free drinks on their European flights. The last time I flew with them (Heathrow to Nice), we got a free tasty snack and drink. That was one of the things that really made them stand out. We hope that European National carriers all start to rethink their positions in the aviation market and bring service levels back to what they were, as we are probably many Economy Class passengers who do not wish to fly low cost but are willing to pay a little extra for some of the frills that used to be standard in Economy Class. My last flight with them was in May 2016. We received a tasty little wrap that was very much welcome, as I was connecting from a long flight from Canada. Hopefully this is something they will reconsider in the future.

BA turned into a glorified Ryan Air in late 2016. I travelled with BA many times and was shocked by how quickly it went downhill under its current CEO. It used to be a consistently good airline that gave reliably pleasant flights. Perhaps not the best airline, they were still decent and you could tell they were putting in a good effort. Now, it just feels cheap and run-down. I flew with BA last in October and November. The flight in October was pure hell and they made a mess that resulted in my bag being misplaced for a week and having to go through "additional screening" courtesy of the Department of Homeland Security. In a ten-hour flight they gave us water only 3 times. By the time I got back to London I was sick.

I (Maxi) always enjoyed flying with British Airway´s in the 80´s and 90´s and really hope that they (and other airlines in Europe) will again focus on (for a little extra charge of course) the customer experience, also in Economy. Low Cost Airlines have been racing forward but we believe that there are now passengers who are again willing to pay for the old experience. It will be our pleasure to fly with British Airways again when a few of the frills are back (we are willing to pay a little extra). National Carrier for those of us who want frills and comfort... and Low Cost for those on a budget or who don´t want the frills. For those of us over 6 Feet tall there really was not much legroom on this flight. Regarding seats Maxi prefers the fabric ones on all flights and Maro prefers leather! We are have 12 different flights in a 3 week span next year with Air France, Iberia, British Air, and Swiss Air all in economy. Based on your videos and prior flights, we've upgraded to exit row seats for extra legroom even on the short haul flights (for example Amsterdam to Heathrow).

We have tried them all except Iberia on short haul flights and Swiss was our favorite. Nice to hear that you have chosen your seats based on our videos, we hope that you are happy with the choices. Regarding the Exit row seats, (1) bare in mind that there is often no window or at the most a tiny one on the door you cannot see out of, unless you are standing right up next to it (2) it can be cold sitting next to the door on Longhaul Flights (3) many passengers use the space by the Exit Doors to stand and stretch/exercise throughout the flight or to stand with infants. Thanks for your comments on the Exit Row seats - For me having the extra legroom is a huge plus as I'm 6 foot and I hate to be cramped - a flight on IcelandAir cured me of sitting in cramped economy seating! My wife experienced the cold you mentioned on a later IcelandAir flight as she was next to the door. I have selected the middle and aisle seats on all of these flights so hopefully cold won't be an issue. In fact on our Air France flight from IAD to CDG and back, the seat next to the door was not available (crew member perhaps?) . With the 4 airlines we are flying on this time and 9 different terminals (Dulles, Charles de Gaule, Dublin, Marrakech, Madrid, Schiphol, Heathrow, Gothenburg and Zurich) I hope to document and post our flight and airport experiences as you have done to help fellow travelers!

Hi there Ron, nice to hear from you again! Thanks so much for watching our British Airways Economy Class flight to London Heathrow, we are glad to hear that you enjoyed it. That holding pattern was absolutely amazing and we are sure that everybody can hear how excited we were about the views! It is such a pity that they have begun competing with low cost carriers. We firmly believe that there is a market (perhaps our age group) that still wants some of the frills along the way. We are willing to pay a little extra to have checked luggage, a snack and drink and a little extra legroom like we always used to get, how much extra can that cost (we buy access to airport lounges around the world for around 20 Euros- for that price we are given unlimited snacks and drinks (including alcoholic) for up to three/four hours). Those who do not wish to have these service then have the option to take a Low Cost Airline, surely there is space for both markets! We had a wonderful time in London thank you and look forward to returning again in the future. Our return flight will however be with a low cost carrier like Norwegian as the product is the same (maybe a little more Legroom on Norwegian) as BA as far as we can tell. I think that Maxi is bang on the money when he says airports are too expensive. Even your beloved Burger King costs so much more than in a town centre restaurant. Better to fill up at home or take a sandwich and save your money for the destination. It's not being stingy, it's being wise not to be ripped off!!!! Love the videos xx

We quite do not understand why sometimes prices have to be so expensive at airports, and we have heard many of our fellow travelers say the same thing. As I (Maxi) always say, surely lower prices would lead to more customers = more turnover and more profits in the long run... I may be wrong, I obviously do not know the factors involved in price setting. I (fellow travelers) have the same opinion about hotel bar and restaurant prices, always more expensive than you can buy the same item for outside the hotel/resort. Instead of selling to hotel guests and making "extra profits" hotel guests buy drinks etc. from outside the hotel (particularly at resorts) and bring those to the room... We are not sure about whether the Burger King price is more expensive as our tradition is that we only buy it at the airport, we cannot compare prices in our home country as we never go ;-) We would use airport shops and services a lot more if prices were a little closer to High Street prices. I totally agree with Maxi about airport prices. 10+ euros for a sandwich and a cup of coffee while waiting for a lowfare flight (sometimes as low as 30 euros) is quite absurd in my opinion. You hit the nail on the head, airport prices can indeed be higher for an item than what you have paid for your air ticket (in some cases) when flying low cost. We believe that if prices were standard high street prices more passengers would be willing to spend money at the airport and hence there would be more turnover. We would probably also spend a little more as one does when in holiday mode. In the old days before real "Duty Free" shopping disappeared I (Maxi) would always treat myself to a few brand name aftershaves, colognes etc. just because it was cheaper! Nowadays when it is not much cheaper than "normal" shops I do not buy anything at all, hence my theory lower the prices at the airport and you may get more customers, turnover and yes even profits! You are absolutely correct about the lounges we often do that too (buy access) and just love the service we get, but in this case we did not have enough time before our flight to visit the lounge. Another great video! As I’m 6ft4 I would have a problem with those seats! I really try to avoid British Airways these days. They seem very poor compared to carriers Emirates, Qatar, Etihad and Singapore. The BA business class on long haul isn’t that great either with the weird “back to front” seat configuration. As for me..I’m flying from Leeds Bradford next Saturday to Marseille via Schipol with KLM and Air France 😀

Yes, for us over 6 feet tall the economy class seating arrangement on BA (at least onboard the A319 we flew on) is very poor even for a short haul aircraft! We have flown with the same aircraft type with Bangkok Airways and had much more space than this and a delicious hot meal with drinks served (see that flight review here kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4WwXomfn7-Jmsk). We most certainly hope that BA will see that this low cost move is not favorable to customers and change strategies. We will try to avoid flying short haul with them until we hear rumors that the service has been improved. That said, we will still give their long haul a try in the future although we have not hear good about that here on KZbin either (I, Maxi, loved flying with BA in the 80´s and 90´s). You are in good hands with Air France and KLM, snacks and drinks are still available. I agree with your thoughts about the seat arrangements, terrible in B.A. even paying for business class doesn't get you a good stretch. I'm only 6ft 1in and still couldn't stretch out fully in those weird back to back seats... a shame on B.A. for presuming everybody is short and middle-ages size.

If you don´mind I am going to copy and paste the reply I just wrote to one of our other viewers regarding our British Airways experience and thoughts/hopes for the future. I (Maxi) always enjoyed flying with British Airway´s in the 80´s and 90´s and really hope that they (and other airlines in Europe) will again focus on (for a little extra charge of course) the customer experience, also in Economy. Low Cost Airlines have been racing forward but we believe that there are now passengers who are again willing to pay for the old experience. It will be our pleasure to fly with British Airways again when a few of the frills are back (we are willing to pay a little extra). National Carrier for those of us who want frills and comfort... and Low Cost for those on a budget or who don´t want the frills. Just so long as there still is a choice for everybody! The CEO of Delta Airlines said not too long ago that there is such a thing as cutting too much. In recent years, Delta has invested heavily in improving their product quality. In the 1990s and early 2000s, US carriers led the way in cutting corners and reducing inflight services. They've started reversing that because they realised they were pushing passengers away and ruining their brand. KLM and Lufthansa show that you can be profitable while giving passengers a pleasant flight. I'd rather spend a few extra quid to fly with them than BA now.

Good morning! This video seemed to meet up some problems. I tried to watch it on many other devices and found out that: 1. The video image is not moving from 28 minutes and 48 seconds onwards, and 2. BA I'm proud to have as my flag carrier but sadly gone down hill rapidly and I have heard their bringing meals etc back for short flights as they have made to many cutbacks and people complained, personally and sadly I won't fly them again long haul as their Asian counterparts are streets ahead in comfort and service

I (Maxi) flew a lot between South Africa and the UK in the 80´s & 90´s with British Airways and always enjoyed the high standards of service even in Economy Class. It would be very sad if the British Airways Legacy is lost on account of trying to be a Low Cost Carrier! If/When they bring back the service and start competing with the Asian and Middle Easter Airlines we will fly with them again. That being said they (also other European Airlines) have a long way to go before they reach the standards and services we as Economy Class passengers get on the Asian and Middle Eastern Airlines. BA is seems fall apart and blamed on UK passengers fly on leisure airlines the LCC. BA is not LCC it normal airline for UK. In summer 2014, from LHR to LIN on BA A319 they served drink and snack such as ham with cheese sandwich. Nowadays I avoid fly BA and fly on different airline instead. Great video Maxo and Maro.

Hi there Paul and thanks for watching our British Airways Flight Review. I Maxi have flown long haul and short haul with this airline in the 80´s and 90´s and back then it was a great experience. I (Maxi) am more than willing to pay a little extra for the ticket in order to have slightly more legroom, a snack and a drink on a short haul flight in Economy Class. It seems that everybody has forgotten that we are flying... we are not on a bus or train... we are above the clouds in the air, and for us (Maxi and Maro) that is still a very SPECIAL experience no matter how many times we have done it! It would be nice if the experience could still be enjoyed with the frills... We fly with the National Carriers because we want the experience that the Low Cost Carrier does not offer. Great video. In the UK press,over the last 18 months, BA has taken a hammering. Suggesting a once proud airline is on a race to the bottom of the pile! Trying to compete with the budget airlines instead of the up and coming Arab airlines. Complaints around the lack of free food and drink and the cramming in of more and more seats.. Unfortunately your blog provides the evidence that this is , indeed , the case. Such a shame that one of the finest airlines in the world is now on pare with Rynair, Easyjet etc. Cheers Harry

I (Maxi) am going to paste the same reply to you as I gave one of our other viewers regarding our thoughts on this (I hope that is ok) "As mentioned in the video the staff were friendly and professional but the lack of a complimentary beverage, very limited legroom and an extra charge to check luggage in was a disappointment. We were both left wondering why we should choose to fly with British Airways rather than with Norwegian (first choice low cost carrier), Easy Jet or Ryanair? We have heard complaints, here on KZbin, similar to ours and in our opinion British Airways should focus on delivering a better flight experience rather than trying to be a low cost carrier. The reason why we chose BA was because we wanted a "better" economy class flight experience rather than the a low cost airline one. We do believe that there is still a market for economy class customers who do not want to fly low cost (lowest price possible). During the late 80´s and 90´s I (Maxi) flew both long haul and short haul with BA and those journeys were memorable and enjoyable, and it was a pleasure to fly BA! We look forward to getting the chance to do a Flight Review of the British Airways Long Haul experience in the future but from what we hear on KZbin we may be disappointed there too, I hope not, it would be a pity! " British Airways has been one of the finest airlines and should try and keep it that way! The Middle Eastern and Asian airlines are steaming ahead in popularity as they are providing passengers with all the little frills and services that the European Airlines are cutting away left, right and center... who are we (most of us) going to choose to fly with? The advantage BA has is that it flies to Heathrow. In the past I (Maxi) flew a lot with BA between South Africa and the UK, back then BA was one of the top airlines out there. BA is a great Airline but is being squeezed by Europe's Low Cost Carriers into cutting service and comfort to produce low fares which they often do. The seats are nice but the pitch is more like that of Charters. All the Airport Shops are a complete rip off but the normal Airport contracts feature extortion of up to 25% by Airport Operators.

The legroom was very limited for Maxi and it did not help matters when the seat in front was lowered more. Maro, and other people under 6 Feet, do have "some" legroom... Hopefully the trend of everybody going the Low Cost way will soon end! We believe that there are many travelers out there who are willing to pay a little extra to fly with the traditional National Carriers in exchange for a few minor comfits... legroom, a drink and a snack. We hope the airlines (it´s not just BA cutting back) realise that and start to bring back "normal" standards for those of us who prefer not to fly Low Cost! Maxi is over 6 feet tall so the amount of legroom provided does leave a very tight squeeze for the legs. We hope that they (and actually more and more other airlines too) start to rethink the space allocation of Economy Class seating on the aircraft fleets in the future, the amount of leg room (or the lack of it) in some aircraft Economy Class Cabins is really pushing it to the limit nowadays!
