I did this exact thing when I went to Belize. I brought only my x-s10 and 35mm. I had never been there before and it was a beautiful trip with my partner. There were probably moments when I wish I had a wider view, but mostly I just loved the simplicity and capturing special views and moments as they came. I don’t look back on those photos with regret, I’m glad I brought just that small combo. Sometimes I see videos on “My Travel Gear” and it’s absurd the number of cameras and lenses they bring to take a picture of every single possible thing they come across on their trip. Unless the purpose of the trip itself is photography, I guess I could understand that. To me travel photography isn’t entirely about viewing what I’m walking around as something to be “captured” (much worse something to Insta-Model in front of), it’s a chance for me as a unique individual to experience this place for the very first time with fresh eyes. The pictures I take while traveling are typically very personal moments or views of things so that I have those images to cherish in the future. Cheers to you for trying this experiment! I’m sure you don’t regret it at all!

I really like the mood and message here. It is really easy to overpack- especially as a photographer. Shooting with just my little fuji camera and a pancake lens has been really freeing and makes me feel very present. I have been trying to remember that I'm a traveler who photographs, not a photographer who travels, so the primary goal should be to love the process.

I did my first trip in Japan with a 35mm as well, on a FF camera. It was my best photography moment. Using only one lens pushed me to think about my composition

For me I like somewhere between 24mm and 28mm for times when I want to work for my image, and somewhere between 35mm and 45mm for when I want more of a point and shoot experience. I find that the 35/40 just matches exactly what I saw, and takes no extra framing. Where as the 24/28 pushes me to reconsider my perspective, angle, height, position, leading lines, context in frame etc. Sometimes this extra set up time isn't what I'm in the mood for, but I usually default to this being the edc because not only does it force me to produce more considered images with extra context that I will prefer further in the future, it also stops my impulse to overshoot, and then saves time deleting images I didn't necessarily believe in even in the moment. That said, the 35/40 is just so much easier to get a great shot, because it's so automatic. My eye finds the frame before my camera comes out. This is why I prefer a flip up LCD for 24/28 and EVF for 35/40 and above. One is about capturing my personal perspective, the other is about capturing an ideal perspective.

One makes do with one takes, I visited Japan back in the day with just an Olympus mju2 film camera (fixed 35mm f2.8). I’ve also visited London with just a 50 f1.8. All That said, for me the ideal small set up for most trips is a 20mm f1.8 and 55mm f1.8. And as one gets older, one doesn’t think one can always go back!

The 35mm f2 Fujicron is a great value lens for the image quality and out of focus backgrounds it can create. Took it to a recent trip to Europe and paired with my 23mm f2 Fujicron I did not feel like I missed having my other lenses. Great for travelling light. Next time may try and squeeze in my bag the 50mm f2.

Love the 35mm F2. I had the 35 1.4 which is a great lens. On my X-E3 and X-T2 the additional focus speed of the XF 35 F2 really does make a difference, and I really like the global render. I ended up keeping and preferring the 35 F2 overall. The build, weight, size and aperture ring resistance feels just perfect and weather resistance is helpful. Often I'll take a single lens on a trip or just out for a walk. The way I see it, no matter what your choice, there are always compromises. If I take my Tamron 18-300 I have every focal range, telephoto range and image stabilization. A great choice for daytime shooting and even night stills. Just poor for low light action shots and shallow DoF at closer ranges. I accept and embrace the challenge either way. Thanks for sharing your photos and experience!

I have the 33 f1.4 on the way, I'll be interested to see how it compares to the 35 f2. There is a huge difference in size between the f2s and the f1.4s!

I do the same with Sony a6600 and 35mm f1.8 -- Somehow it just always works. I could probably live with the 18-50 f2.8 as easily, though.

I have the Fuji 27mm f/2.8 as my mini travel lens because it makes pretty much all their cameras pocketable 😄 Shame the AF is a bit clunky. I think that 40-50mm FF equivalent range is perfect for travelling with a single lens as it gives a really intimate feel in narrow streets and it's usually still wide enough to get the taller buildings in for longer shots.

I should try the 27mm, the 35mm feels already light and small to me but the 27mm is really tiny haha

@@adriensanguinetti I never meant to buy it, but I made the mistake of trying it at a trade show and liked it way more than I thought I would 😆

Very helpful advise! For me, an X-E4 and a 35 1.4 (weighing just over 1 lb. 3 oz.) make a nice travel combo. Again, thanks for your helpful thoughts ..

Great video. I'm planning on doing a world tour for many months and I'm really tempted to carry only my Leica Q2 (FF with fixed 28mm 1.7) with me and leave my Sony stuff at home. I'd add the Mini 4 Pro as well, but although it would be a fun challenge, and on past trips too many choices sometimes led to me leaving everything at home, I'm also afraid to miss a perfect moment that would work best with a Tele.

I always at least try and do a session with only one lens. Having too many options (even a zoom) can seriously hamper any kind of flow state

I used a fixed lens Fuji camera for 10 years before switching to a Sony a7iv and I feel like it has also helped me improve my photography. I definitely miss the portability and the feeling of lightness as well; the trap of carrying a lot of gear sometimes feels cumbersome and I decide not to bring my camera with me in the first place.
