$1,100 is half the salary of a salesgirl at Walmart. This apartment costs 20k rubles, which is about 1/3 of the salary of the salesgirl in the next building. 1100 долларов - это половина зарплаты продавщицы в Волмарте. Эта квартира стоит 20к рублей, что примерно 1/3 зарплаты продавщицы в соседнем доме.

That's why it is wrong to make raw 'nominal' comparisons. But a lot of ppl in the West do it bcz it 'sounds good' (and makes them feel better about themselves if "someone else is poorer than they are"). So... does it matter if person A makes 3000 usd/mo and shells out 1100/mo for a studio, vs. person B makes 500 usd/mo and pays 150/mo for rent? And yet "A" is gonna boast about being "6x richer" ... when they actually aren't. 🤷🏻♂️ all it suggests is that the currency exchange rate is artificially maintained unbalanced (i.e., political trickery). When, in fact, both A and B are in a similar situation.
@sashaz19799 күн бұрын
Which single saleswoman has a better life is a difficult debate. In the US, she is more likely to need a car to get to work. Public transportation is very good in the suburbs of Moscow. She can even work just next door. It would seem that in the US a person is richer because he has a car. But with the small salary of a saleswoman there will only be an old car. And it can easily break down. And the cost of fixing the car could easily be equal to that saleswoman's entire salary. A person can experience tremendous stress from random events. In any case, no one envies the life of single unskilled workers. In any given country.

They should do this in the Netherlands. There is a housing crisis for years in the Netherlands, mainly because the number of applicants for housing is far more than available housing. For example, 300 people apply for the same house, only 1 can be accepted. Another reason is real estate pricing, slow construction process and they don't have a system like Russia, China, South Korea to rapidly built new homes. Just for a tunnel the Netherlands spends 20 years. Average housing project in Netherlands is between 2 and 4 years. If they copy the Russian model (small space + affordable) and the Korean / Chinese model (rapidly building + tall buildings) = efficient + low cost = solving housing crisis more effectively.

I had a look at the average wage in Russia, around 100,000 roubles a month. So this rent is 1/5 of the average wage. The average wage where I am in the UK is roughly £3,000 a month, yet a place like that near me would be £1,000 a month so 1/3 of the wage. Plus that looked a nice clean area, facilities all within walking distance. Wouldn’t fancy a Russian winter but I guess you’d get used to it. Great video Russell

In Russia, 86k is the average salary. Minus 13% tax. But there are always people who argue that the average salary is equal to the salary of a sales clerk. Of course, not everyone gets the average and more. I think in the US and UK too, less than 1/3 of the population gets the average.

Thanks for the vid. So what would be a minimum wage in that part of Moscow in order to have a reference point of earnings versus livability? I am starting to view living differently as where I'm from we have a lot of unused space just to say we have it.
@dlutz72486 күн бұрын
As a Muscovite, I say it depends greatly on what type of job you're working and for what company. I mean, I'm a marketing specialist that makes like 170k rubles a month, and I'm considered to be paid on the higher end of salaries, but a taxi driver could make double that while being considered a much more lower-class job. Our salaries are all over the place. On tbe other hand, what I can say about livability and the salary/expenditures balance is that base expenses in Moscow and Russia are low compared to the West. Utilities for my large 3-room flat come at $100 a month (11k roubles), that includes central heating, electricity and water. Hi-speed optical internet+IPTV - about $5, and then another $10 for a mobile plan with unlim internet. Food isn't especially expensive depending on your eating habits. Medical care is free for most things (and on top of that you usually have paid healthcare service from your workplace's health insurance), and public transportation is cheap AF. So the thing is that comparable to the US or Western Europe our salaries might not be as big in absolute numbers for middle-class folk, but relatively they are, indeed, big, because we don't spend as much on a comparably comfortably lifestyle.

It is true. Mortgage rates are over 25 percent in every bank. However, there are 5-7 percent rates for IT workers, families with 2+ kids and for the soldiers of the war in Ukraine
@kreemson803810 күн бұрын

I have a mortgage at 6%. There are preferential categories that are given at a low interest rate. But for the rest, it will be 28%, because now the central bank's key rate is high.

It seems apt bldgs and food stores are quite well covered as are remote villages but never seems to be much coverage of what housing looks like in the suburbs. Are the lots generally large?, do most have double garages, local schools ? are they staying free of this dumb 15 minute strategy etc etc
@SomewhereInRussia10 күн бұрын
Suburbs like those in the US are not very common in Russia. Something similar can be seen in expensive "cottage settlements" (gated communities). Usually people in Russia live outside the cities in villages, settlements and garden communities. They have a local school, a medical center, some stores, a bus and train stop. Usual land lot is 600-1200 sq.meters. Double garages are not common but you can build whatever you want.

@@TravellingwithRussell It's the latest 10-15 years only. But Moscow has already prohibited such small apartments. Typical Russian flats are 1/2/3-rooms. About $54,500 Canadian. That unit would cost, at least, $390,000 over here, but a lot fancier, and they don't build many that small. An "alternative" might be a 50 year old " mobile home" in a trailer park. You would pay, at least, $175,000 PLUS monthly pad rent at least $700 PLUS utilities AND property tax. Plus insurance of course. Very few amenities ( no pool, weight room, garden area, games room, etc.). Limited public transit usually. 😢. Thanks for the tour Russell!! ♥️♥️👃✌️🇨🇦

This apparment block is a cheapest housing, 10 studios per floor. This awful standard is slammed here, but it at least you have a choice and opportunity to rent just something. If you pay 300 USD, it will be closer to city center and larger. E.g. a flat in a 5 story block with larger adjacent territory. Last year due to subsidized mortgage prices soared into space. I'm not sure 500 USD is enough to rent any decent housing in Moscow. In StPete it is for sure, but it is better to take a mortgage. For families with small children rate is subsidized.
