First of all thank you. Excellent presentation. Have been using pretty much the same set up for several years. With a few differences. I am an old guy so sitting down and getting up can be kind of tricky. Built mine with legs to have more height. Rig started out as a cube van so have more room. Use a bigger stainless metal funnel to deal with splashing. I know gross, but part of life for us old farts. Pounded the funnel into the correct shape to fit my set up and rigged up a strap system to attach it. Also I used an elongated oval toilet seat. Just wait. When one gets older and puts on a bit of weight the oval toilet seat is the only way to go. I use cedar mulch for poop topping. Has good absorption and eliminated using any nasty smell cover uppers, inexpensive, and available at any home improvement and/or garden store. Usually comes in large bags so will have to figure on storage. That is when some family my be of good use? Lastly for number one I use a one gallon glass container that happened to come with a plastic duo handle attached around the lid opening. Easy in and out. And lastly, congratulations to your parents for raising such an insightful, courageous daughter.

Because we empty it into a composting bin, we'll use compostable bags. Don't like the idea of putting poop in a public trash can. How about not using a plastic bag and dumping the poop down a regular public toilet? Then rinse the container with a hose outside and fertilize the lawn.

I had put in a bedside gramma blue porta potty with arms to help me with my bad knees but this video helped me with dealing with the liquid and solids. I lowered the potty to its lowest point since I have a low top Sienna Toyota and covered it with a twin black sheet to camouflage it and put a tray to use it as a bedside table. I will continue trial runs until I am satisfied with its configuration. I bought a yard reclining chaise lounge from Big Lots and added padding for the bed. I sleep in a recliner since I have acid reflux and rarely have a problem since i started doing that. Love your frank, no nonsense approach. MANY THANKS.

@livinginthenow Жыл бұрын
Everyone has a different solution. Mine is a 5 gallon bucket, biodegradable bags, and pine pellets. The reason that so many people use a 5 gallon buckets is because they can typically hold the weight of a person, so building a box isn't necessary. As for the "bag of liquid" problem, I use pine pellets from Tractor Supply in my toilet. They do double duty: 1) They soak up the liquid and eliminate the odor, and 2) They cover the solids, thereby preventing the odor from escaping. I tend to change bags whenever I do number 2, and dispose of the bag as soon as is convenient.

Lots of good ideas here. I might build one for my small sailboat. Maybe put some caulking between the seat and the platform? I think the key to not having smells (if you're not dumping the contents frequently) is to have a small 12 V fan constantly venting outside (to dry the feces, which will then not smell). Marine chandleries sell a nice little solar vent with a small fan that would work well for this purpose.

Been living in my van for almost 5 years. Prior to full time vanliving I camped pretty much in every type of RV situation but had always loved the simplicity of my tent ⛺️ and or sleeping in my SUV. I have a portable separating toilet that I use similarly to your biffy. However mine is awkward to set up each time I need it. I only use it for #2 although the separation of liquid from solids is a must in my experience. A small funn type design for women "Sheewee" kinda device works well. I use a Nalgene bottle to catch the urine. It is so simple to empty, easy, sanitary no muss no fuss. The Nalgene bottle and the pee funnel take up so little space. I clean both every use. Fast and easy. I have made a study of various portable composting biffy's. Your's is perfect. There are few on the market that might suit my needs but $$$ cost prohibitive. I want to be able to quickly clean it and tuck it away, easily. Also I want it to be ready to use without alot of prep time. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Girl, not everybody has a sexy, competent father like you to help build a toilet! Love the idea. I would apply contact paper to the top of the wooden box to facilitate cleaning. You can also purchase a separator for a few bucks on Amazon. I compost with fine horse pine shavings into a nursing home bedside toilet. No odor. I have a rural cabin for further composting outdoors.. But that's not suitable for traveling in a van. Urine mixed with 10 parts water (no soap) can be used to fertilize ornamental plants but not vegetables.

Nice work. I looked at the prices of composting toilets and I had a similar reaction. (no way!) I'm pretty handy so I think I can make one for a fraction of $1000. We're planning to live in a yurt in the mountains of Mongolia so we can definitely use compost for a vegetable garden. They also sell commercial composting toilets here too but for about $280. Still that's kind of steep. I've thought about just using buckets and bottles (or just going outside on our land) and we may do that at first but it'd be nice to have a proper indoor toilet. Especially since it gets to 40 below in winter.

The pellets absorb the liquid so it won't slosh and the pine keeps it smelling fresh. The pellets are used in horse stalls. When I first started, I tested it for like two weeks in a 5 gal bucket with a lid, used a small trash bag, put enough pellets to just cover the bottom. Used it for like a week, then left it for like two weeks covered. Opened it up and I was amazed that it DID NOT stink!!! check it out!!!

I’ve been looking at composing toilets to replace my trad toilet in my Airstream. But, $1100 😮 No thanks. I have a camping toilet for outdoor use & I thought, why not just use that? But, the pee separation idea is genius! Thank you!!
I live in a very small house/camp in Maine. When I first moved here and for several years I only had an outhouse, when I finally got running water I thought it would be great to have an actual indoor toilet. Cost of an actual state approved septic system.....15 to 20,000......for ONE person to poo!!!! Found an "old maine guy" to dig/build what would have been an acceptable septic 20 30 years ago for around 1000.00. Any update would only include a composting toilet.

$1000 is daylight robbery, I'm glad that you made your own. I don't know if you have this saying in the USA but here in the UK we say "They saw you coming" or "Fools and their money soon part company"
