Hey Chris, thanks for the content and I would like to comment on the Thai Coconut Pancake (Kanom Krok) stall. It’s not a language barrier issue in that situation, it’s the fact that you’re pointing a camera at them while speaking English and asking them questions with your finger. So many content creators in Thailand sticking their cameras in people faces, inside a stall/window and pointing with their fingers. On top of that, a lot of them don’t end up buying anything. Try pointing the camera to the ground when asking questions, use Google Translate app and show them the text, use a open hand/palm when pointing at items/person and not using 1 finger, and you should have no issues in the future. Edit: Also, learn the basic greetings in Thai like: thank you, how much?, numbers like 1-10, and general greetings when you see somebody. That would help a lot in any country!

I'm curious about the pointing thing. Can you explain the idea behind using an open hand/palm when pointing to items or a person? Is this a Thai culture thing, or your approach in situations when you don't know the proper etiquette? I ask because when I approach culture, I try and observe when I don't know the proper way to do/say things, ask questions when there isn't a language barrier, and attempt to incorporate the common things locals are doing. This woman is pointing at things with one finger, so I seek to understand. Thank you for your help in educating me!

@@ForrestGreenPea Reason is culture and applies to other Asian cultures as well. This video will explain everything and the pointing part is at 3:00 mark in the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ap_bhqOIgpxrgsU Or search "Do's and Don'ts in Thailand"

@@ForrestGreenPea I’m from Malaysia. Pointing with your index finger is considered rude throughout a lot of Southeast Asia. Better to use an open hand or thumb. It’s just a cultural thing. :)

What happened at the “Kanom Krok” stall is just about the language barrier. You were very polite by saying can I try... but in Thai it sounds like you were asking for a free sample instead of wanting to buy (her son translated like that). When you asked about the taro toppings, she lifted the lid to show you that it’s being cooked. She just didn’t speak. Most Thais who are not fluent in English are usually shy. They are not rude.

The coconut corn or sweet potato. The Thai lady was trying to figure out what you asked but thinks you asked if it was sweet and then said that it’s not sweet in Thai but didn’t know how to tell you. Definite a language barrier. The other Thai lady said “no” bc she was trying to say that it wasn’t sweet. They were gonna give u a sample to try but you left.

I little tips. It's happening with alk the English speaking, you guys talk like everyone have to understand you but surprise, 95% of thai peaple dont understand you. Repeat the same thinghs in the same way is not helping at all. And asking i Can tey that suopose you want eat for free. Carry the money in your and show One finger and without spoken att all I'm sure the lady give you one portion. I had a tapas bar in Barcelona and a coffe shop in chiang mai Americans are always the same they came and start speaking like everyone have to understand that and making nothing for help the other for understand better. Next time I cone to USA I start speak in italian all the time and let's see whats happens 😂
