cgi is awful but the world is so weird it kind of fits it. The cgi is like another layer of the world being uncanny and weird. The backgrounds were actually beautiful for a modern day anime; they're usually soulless and uninspiring, riddled with tacky computer textures. The background quality really saves the animation

I love the tone this show strikes. There's a fine balance with slap-stick violence in storytelling- of not becoming so jaded or intense that it ceases to have impact or purpose....while at the same time not brushing it off so quickly it makes no impression or fails to impart the seriousness of the situation. This show does a phenomenal job of making sure you care about these people and their hurts and wants even though they can maim each other to death and still pop back up like mushrooms.

It's always hard for me to describe how delightfully weird Dorohedoro is. I think you really eloquently covered just how dense the story beats are. It was only 12 episodes but felt like 30 because of how good the pacing is and how interesting the story is.

Man, this was a good video, Dorohedoro is my fav anime and the 3 videos i've watched so far (your video, pollymacho's and Bonsai pop's) have really brought different perspectives. This is a gruesome, gritty, comedic & dark anime which entertains a select few, but i recomment to everyone. thanks fro bringing it to light!

The chaos of Dorohedoro is one of the things that works wonderfully and I have no idea how. Even if I say it's disconnected elements somehow jig-sawing itself to make a Picasso masterpiece, I don't even know if the elements are disconnected or not and if it's Picasso or a Van Gogh styled masterpiece. It works, and so it works. Rather than saying it's grey morality, I think it's a case where everything is just pretty black. It feels like the core of the motivations of every character in Dorohedoro is pretty selfish, even if what they're doing is for people close to them. It's one of the reasons why I never really thought En's family were really villains (well, apart from En) and treated them similarly to how I viewed Kaiman and Nikaido.

It's one of those weird situations where just fucking around with a bunch of stuff ends up working shockingly well, lol. And fair, tho I wouldn't say it's full black, but in retrospect, it does seem like a very dark shade of grey regardless, to me at least. But then again, as I mentioned in the video, I do think that aspect of the show can be quite subjective, so *shrugs*

Dorohedoro is so good, I didn't mind the horrible cgi. Though, the bad cgi kinda plays to the odd world. It helps the background art is likely the best in modern anime besides A Silent Voice or Your Name but those are movies. Most shows' background art look super cheap with horrible computer textures, just plain souless, but Dorohedoro backgrounds feel closer to Akira with life.

The minus from the anime is they nerfed Noi's sex appeal imo. In the manga they really set that characteristic as a huge part of the oxymoron of big buff woman yet extremely appealing even for those who're not into that type. While complaints of being 3D came about wasn't because it's badly animated but it diverge from Q Hayashida's very grimy style of art and atmosphere which I kinda understand where it came from

i love this series so much and i tried continuing with the manga but it gets so much crazier, wilder, and more chaotic! i stopped because i didn't want it to get spoiled and i wanted to see the action translated into moving anime form. i just wish they adapt the whole manga 🤞😙 i hope they give us a longer season next.

Yeah, I think that's fair - granted, I haven't read the manga, so I can't fully judge, but even from the few bits and pieces I've seen, that sketchy aesthetic seems like something that's very hard to translate into 3D

As an animation major, it would've been absolute HELL to translate the manga art style into a 2D animation (complex clothing designs- stuff like caiman's head, most masks, etc). 3DCG was the best option- if not I'm pretty sure the show would be mostly still frames with a few really good action scenes (which is where all the budget would have to go). It works really really well in some areas. Though it is a little janky at times. MAPPA does a really good job at blending the 2D elements with the 3D elements, though. And if/when we get a season 2 I'm sure it'll look better now that they've gotten the hang of it (season 2's always seem to look better than the first).

This is an anime that doesn't have a protagonist or antagonist. They are citizens of Hole/ Sorcerer's world living their daily lives. The characters are so adorable, you'll forget that you are watching a seinen/ gore/ horror anime.
