3 Crazy FUNK Bass Licks TUTORIAL

Playing funk bass lines is probably one of my favorite past times when sitting down and playing the bass. On my instagram I recorded myself playing some funk bass licks when I was playing with a loop and got a lot of comments asking for a tutorial. So I decided to do a bass tutorial of the licks I played.
A lot of these funk bass licks can be difficult because of how fast they are, so just take your time and practice these one section at a time and with a metronome so you can master them to improve your funk bass line repertoire.

Great licks. I'm going to get shedding on these! Some small corrections/theory notes for anyone that is confused. You mention a few times that we're in the key of Bb minor, and the Dorian mode. If that's true, we're in Abmajor, not Bbminor. The Gmin7b5 is the VII chord of Ab major, and the Dbmaj chord is the IV. Also, while Dbmajor is the relative major of Bbminor, The Db scale used here would really be a Lydian mode, not a straight Dbmaj, though the blues scale works anyway. The first part of Lick 1 (Gm7b5 arpeggio) says it's on the 9th fret, but it should be the 10th fret on the A string (G) The second part of Lick 1 (Db Major Blues) has the correct frets, but players should know that the bottom note is not a Db, but an F (2nd inversion is a clearer way to say this than 2nd position) For Lick 2, ignoring the Aminor7 passing chord, you could make the lick sound a little more 'in' by making the third part an Abmaj7 arpeggio to stay within the key. For Lick 3, I wonder what made you use the Db mixolydian instead of Db Lydian since it will clash if other musicians play the maj7th under. Just for tension on that 7th?

Hi Travis, thanks so much for your time in putting this excellent bass line to practice with, but I too am confused with the diagram, shouldn't it be labeled the 10th fret ??.. 9th fret would make it F#/Gb.. labeling the dots would be ideal too..

good lesson BUT the fingerboard chart is driving me nuts :-D had to ignore it and watch only your fingers because its totally confusing. normally the e string is the lowest (like its in tabs) and the frets start from left. if you know what i mean. and maybe using a 4-string when only 4 strings are needed for the examples - its easyer to get it. thanks anyway!
