I've liked this song ever since it came out but I only just read up on what it actually means; the lead singer witnessed his father being repeatedly physically abusive towards his mother throughout his childhood (hence the name of the song). After going back and listening to the lyrics properly for once, I can't believe I've never noticed how accurate they are, 'Keeping up appearances, keeping up with the Jones...' 'you say your sorrys, and then you do it again...' It's so tragic and I can't describe how much truth those words hold for me and other people who've had to watch domestic abuse definitely know what I mean. It amazes me how much music and complete strangers can instantly feel closer to you than most people in your life. What a painfully beautiful song.

Hi Michelle..I was only looking up the meaning of some of their songs today (and not for the 1st time as there's a lot more to Frans words than many realise)..Travis takes me back to an important time in my life. I wasn't aware of the meaning to this one..I think he's singing from his Mother's perspective.....I hear reoffender differently now..Thanks for sharing what you found..A lot of people can get this one sadly..

It does not matter how you found it. The fact that we liked the song enough to come here is what does. There are so many songs. Of all those songs we all found this one. Isn't that surreal? It's not about "my music is better than yours" it's about "Wow, music, isn't it such a wonderful thing?"and it's about "how could this band or this singer, who I don't know and who doesn't know I exist, write a song that conceptualizes exactly what I feel right now. How do they know what I feel right now? My best friend doesn't even know that. How could a complete stranger know?" Music is not about "keeping up appearances" or "keeping up with the Joneses." It's about keeping it real.

It's one year since I got out of an abusive relationship. He was an addict & had narcissistic traits. One year on, I didn't think I'd still be here. He threatened my life. His family & friends did too. One year on, I'm ok, somewhat close to finding how to happy. But miles better than I was. I'm still healing. There's a long way still go. But progress has been made. This song has been one of those things that sometimes makes me sad for a love that never really existed but also reminds me to keep up with what I've done this past year that has helped me heal, however little, & kept me alive for all the people in my own life who love & do cherish me.
@nayelymillan51307 ай бұрын
Hello! I hope you are feeling better since the date you wrote this comment. I hope you don't mind me sharing my story with you, but I felt very identified by what you wrote. Three years ago I started a relationship with a man much older than me, and who also seemed like the "perfect man" for me. He has been my only "relationship" that I have ever had. In fact, he came and applied the "love bombing" to me in a very strong way and curiously one of the details he had at the beginning was to dedicate the song "Flowers in the window" to me. After a year and a half of relationship, in which everything apparently was fine (since my ex-boyfriend had very subtle signs of his true self, like a soft "gaslight"), a period of one year and three months of devaluation began, the triangulation with his ex-wife and previous partners, in addition to the intimidation he made to me through certain passive-aggressive comments. Everyone around him told me that he was a perfect and charming man and that I was very lucky to be next to him. He even got along very well with my family. But no matter how much I did things to "earn his love" I never succeeded, I was always afraid of making him angry and losing him. He always felt insufficient and that I wasn't worthy of being in that relationship. And if before he gave me some things, in the end, even I ended up spending much more, being uneven. He was envious of my triumphs, that I did well, that good things happened to me. He said I was a "kawaii" woman and he was a "bad" person. There are many things that only people who have been attached to the perpetrator, the abuser, the narcissist or an integrated psychopath, can fully understand. My family didn't know everything that was happening to me until the end of our courtship. Many times he asked me for forgiveness for his offenses. And then again it broke not only my heart, but my soul. He discarded me in theory, although the same day he did I returned some gifts he gave me, and he looked at me with a blank, zombie-like look. He told me we couldn't be together because he didn't feel good about himself and "he didn't want to hurt me." I think he expected me to beg him but I didn't. Three days later he started looking for me and remembering supposedly happy moments (of course, for him the whole time was nice, not for me), and I didn't tell him much. He kept looking for me, he invited me to eat or have coffee and I went to see him, but I never said anything about returning to his side because I respected his decision to break up with me. He even wrote to me on New Year's to congratulate me and I answered him just out of courtesy. Through a cousin (since I told her what happened to me), I learned about narcissistic and psychopathic people, and I understood everything that had happened to me although I refused to believe that he was someone with that personality. So cruel and dark with me and his parents, so happy, charming and intelligent with the others, about whom, by the way, he spoke very badly to me, because he was too hypocritical. He is currently my classmate, I see that he watches me what time I arrive at the university, he does strange and harassing behaviors that only I can perceive, and if he complains, they will think I'm crazy. With his friends he shows that he "suffers from my indifference", because he is a very "good boy". He spies on my family's social networks and my KZbin gameplay channel. Suddenly when I realize that he is looking at me, according to him he looks at me very "in love" and other times very "angry." I honestly don't know what's going on. But I will continue with my zero contact as much as possible as long as we remain colleagues. "Re-Offender" was always my favorite Travis song. But I never thought that he would sadly live every lyric of this song in detail. Thanks for reading me.

At the turn of the millennium Coldplay and Travis were about equal in popularity. But sometime in the mid-2000s, Coldplay started to become really big while Travis' popularity vanished, and now Coldplay fill stadiums and host Superbowl halftime shows while Travis only perform in small venues. Which is a shame because Coldplay really suck nowadays (although their early albums are still quite good) while Travis have always been more talented. My favourite late 90/early 2000s Britpop artist is still Badly Drawn Boy though.

Today I acted like my father used to act when he exploded with rage. I broke some things in my bedroom and screamed that I hated him for making me like this, full of anger and repression. This song hits me hard and I can relate to it's lyrics because I grew up in an abusive home. It's something horrible to know that now that you're grown up you have to deal with all the violence that kept within you for years while you were a child, a teenager, and now an adult. My father has problems with anger and used to be an alcoholic person. Me and my mom had to deal with that for almost 18 years until he decided to stop. Now he is trying to make things right... but I feel that it's too late to repair anything at all. I'm going to find help, because I truly don't want to become like him, I don't wanna hurt anybody, and I don't wanna hurt myself anymore, both physically and emotionally. If you feel like me, please, remember that you are not alone, we are here for you.
