Travis, Thank you!!! I have an 85 Trac that has been sitting for a decade. I watched your video and learned a great deal! I WD-40'd cables & moving parts, and shot a few squirts into the spark plug hole. I then sprayed lithium grease on the chains. I turned the engine over by hand as you had done, then used sand paper on the points. After that I air sprayed and sprayed electric connection cleaner on the points and wire connections. Then I cleaned the carb, and sanded the spark plug. It fired up on the 5th kick! I let it run then adjusted the idle. The best news is I am doing 32mph (I weigh 240)!! So again, thank you very much for this video!!

Just got my first project 'ped. Even though it's not a Puch this video has been a huge help in knowing what I should check. I know KZbin comments can be a disaster (though it doesn't look too bad here, guess moped'ers are good peeps) so I wanted to leave a nice comment and tell you how much I appreciate you making this vid!

I finnally fixed the problem. It was tedious. I exposed the whole wiring system. I checked all wires for puncture marks etc. Cleaned all grounds and disconected the taillights. Had a bad connection which inturn burned out the circuit in the connection box. Cleaned and resaltered. Works fine.I changed the design to ensure that it wouldn't happen agin. Thanks alot. Ah bummer, it's nice when the fix is easy. The switches are funny...the test for them is to tape the two connectors going into them together and see if it still dies when you hit the brake lever. Obviously the bike can't be ridden like this for safety reasons/no brake light - but even if the switch contacts are good and clean it could still be bad. Beyond scuffing up the grounds with sandpaper I would also look for a simplified Tomos A3 wiring guide on MopedArmy for when you do go to re-wire, less wiring makes troubleshooting e-z!

Years ago I had a flathead V8 in a 53 Ford most cylinders had around 90 a couple had 50 and one or two had 25 lbs per square inch and it was still run a hundred. It was bad valve seats that I could not grind out without doing a complete valve job and on a flat head there is no valve adjustment you have to grind off of the stem or lap it down into the seat

HI! I purchased an old TOMOS STREET MATE last week (yes, from Craigslist) so I can teach myself how to ride before jumping on my other bikes (Yamaha xs400 maxim n Honda Shadow VT700). (I promised my family I'd practice on something "little"). Before I purchased it, I saw the ex-owner ride the heck out of it, kicked it back and off he went, so I loaded it in the back of my sedan and off "I" went! I don't know crap about bikes and I'd like to get it street ready (registered, insured, etc.) by fixing it myself. This little moped has been "suped up" to a 70cc with a different engine, a fancy muffler and ... it has no odometer (?) It has no KEY. I didn't notice that before I got home (oopsie) It's been jury rigged like crazy, but it works like a charm. It has a new battery, the tires are ok, but it has a mess of wires sticking out of the oddest places all jumbled together and placed together with plastic ties. So, where do I start? I'd like to do the work myself given I paid two cents for it. I don't want to start throwing money into it. I'm pretty good with electricity, mechanics and I'm not afraid to get dirty. I cannot tell what year it is cuz the VIN is covered right now by a junk load of jury-rigged wires. I can send you pictures, etc. My question is ... where do I start, what do you suggest and thank you, thank you, thank you for any advice. JG

+Janet Grace-Alvarado It sounds like you're off to a pretty good start. That Tomos will have an A55 engine, year will be 2005+. My understanding is the wiring for A55 motors was borrowed from some Chinese scooter and has a lot of extra wires from the factory. If someone has messed with it even further, but everything works (lights, turn signals, horn, etc) I would recommend leaving it. Myrons has a great guide to modern Tomos electrical linked below: www.myronsmopeds.com/category/service/new-tomos-electrical/ The trouble with buying modified mopeds is that most people don't take the time to property tune after installing a 70 kit. If the previous owner didn't reject the carb there is a danger of it seizing from getting too hot. If you only bought it to get comfortable on two wheels, then it's whatever, but if you plan on riding it as a real form of transportation it'd be worth it to read up on performance tuning since modifying a moped from stock has a lot of different variables (torque specs, carb jetting, exhausts, gearing, clutches). At the very least, I'd exercise caution if the stock oil injection system has been left in place, as a 70 kit will keep the RPMs much higher than the stock pump is used to. www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Category:For_Newbies www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Category:Performance_Tuning

Thanks SO MUCH, Travis, for your response and links. I am absolutely not going to be riding this as a mode of transportation. It's solely for practicing and getting my footing on something I can handle until I'm completely comfortable. (ride like a pro dot com) I'd rather practice techniques than "go for a spin". I am very thankful for your response and expertise. THANK YOU!!! Brightest Wishes. JG :D

I took it to a local mechanic who had it running/idling well at his shop. He had cleaned the carberator, put fresh mixed fuel in it. I brought it home and took it about a half mile down the street and it quit and I cannot get it running. The mechanic suggested that it may be the crank seals. Any ideas about what I should try?

Did all of the spark stuff cleaned the points and the plug and still not getting a spark. Points don’t open as much as yours by the way. It was sparking and running pretty well only a few days ago and suddenly stopped after a ride in foggy weather. If water damage is the problem what do I need? Im thinking of just buying a new ignition coil and spark plug but if it’s a CDI problem idk what I’ll do. I’m so discouraged at this point I’ve done everything I feel confident in managing myself.
@TravisTutorial
@TravisTutorial 2 жыл бұрын
It is all a learning process :) Let's start with the basics, I would absolutely start with a new spark plug to eliminate that factor. If it was sparking then not, I'm wondering if it is something simple like a loose spark plug boot on the spark plug wire or bad plug. If it is the black bosch coil, it is rare for those to go bad. From here, if you still have no spark I would read up on wiring for spark only, you want to eliminate variables like the horn wiring and kill switch wiring. Best of luck, once you go through the ignition system once it's like riding a bike
@Whydidtheychangeittohandlesnow
@Whydidtheychangeittohandlesnow 2 жыл бұрын
@@TravisTutorial thanks for the info and here’s the update: I tightened and made sure the boot was fit tight as well as the connection to the ignition coil and all that. Still no spark. I also checked different points for voltage and ultimately decided to get a new ignition coil, cable, boot, and spark plug. I was okay with spending the money for those new parts after testing a bunch. Once I put those in I’ll know if it’s a stator problem or not. Other ppl I’ve talked to agree with me that it’ll probably be that. if that ends up being a problem I’ll get a new stator. I’ll say now I know the kill switch doesn’t work. The lights don’t work either and I think the light switch works because I got voltage when testing those wires at full throttle. I think the stator just doesn’t generate enough electricity for the lights but barely enough for the spark. That’s why I also think the stator finally died on me. Appreciate the help!

@@TravisTutorialjust put the new ignition coil, wire for the boot, spark plug, and boot on. Still no spark. Either I did it too quick and wrong or it means the stator needs fixing. Not sure what to do to make sure I replaced the parts correctly but yea there ya go.

you dont want to use carb or brake cleaner on ignition, use contact cleaner, those others can melt the insulation on your coils

But after that the moped didnt have much torque when going even slightly up hill. Apart from that it was ok. Havent used the moped for nearly ten years. It has been dripping black oil since then from the back of the exhaust pipe. and the oil tank has also got empty. Would you say this is worth touching?

Hey-ya! Old comment, but the float needle will need a rubber tip or you'll have leak city. Treatland.tv for the replacement. The atomizer can be removed with a deep 5mm socket.

Hey Travis. I bought a 1983 Vespa moped when the pandemic first hit . Just now thinking about getting a look at it and seeing if it will run. Any advise?
@TravisTutorial
@TravisTutorial 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there - sure, assuming that is a vespa with pedals, it will have a standard Dellorto SHA carb which came on many different models and is quite easy to clean. Much of the same advice will apply, it will still have ignition points - but it does have a belt and variator instead of a chain, assuming it isn't a single speed Ciao.

HI I'm going through A motori Minerelli. not sure of year. I am not getting spark when I hold the plug to the head, but when I remove the plug and just hold the wire to the head I do see spark. Any tips? Also there is no taillight hooked up not sure if that matters. I am holding just the start lever when checking spark. is that correct? Thanks for any input.
@TravisTutorial
@TravisTutorial 8 жыл бұрын
You have tried a second spark plug right? Just want to check (had that happen to me once...). If that isn't it, most likely a corroded spark plug boot. Treatland.tv sells a super nice NGK boot with a rubber end piece to help keep out water for less than $5, I usually just replace. *Some* Italian mopeds have the brake or tail light hooked up through the ignition coil, but if get spark at the head then that's likely not a factor here. You may find once the bike is running the brake levers will kill the motor. And yes, sounds like you are checking for spark correctly!

Can you make a video on how to charge the battery of a laser 5 SSR moped ?
@TravisTutorial

+Saidia Manyuan (Globetrotter5K) Unfortunately I don't spend much time around newer bikes, but it appears that the battery will be under the right side cover. If you dig around on KZbin you should be able to find a video on charging scooter or motorcycle batteries, sorry I couldn't be of more help!

you think maybe you can't get over 90psi on that one puch could be because it's tapping the Schrader valve, being a high comp head and all.. I noticed you have a vespa si, I have a ciao with problems, cylinder is free but there's a rough patch during rotation, do you know what this could be and why it's keeping my motor from running?

I have a 1984 tomos. When I pull the break lever the bike cuts could you tell me how to fix it.
@TravisTutorial
@TravisTutorial 10 жыл бұрын
I've had this happen on a few bikes, first thing to check is your brake light bulb, if that is not blown then you could have a bad switch (screws into your controls and has a small button that is pushed/released when the brake lever is open). The last likely thing it could be is a bad ground somewhere.

Thx for the video, i have a few questions, checked the compression spark and timing. Also cleaned the carb, but stil the Puch doesnt run. The spark plug gets wet really fast and when I tried to start it Thérèse is a littekens bit of smoke coming from the exhaust. What could the probleem be?

Ok so Travis I could hug you. Im on my very first project and I needed this video. I bought two mopeds for $450. A Moto Guzzi Robin and a Pacer Super sport. I could only keep one so I sold the Moto Guzzi that was running by the way but it didn't have that awesome top tank. Now Im taking that money and plunking it in to the pacer that wasn't running, good or bad. I didn't watch this video (kicking myself) before I started to tear in to the Pacer. I was very meticulous about bagging and labeling all the screws and so forth so getting this back together will be pretty easy. I have several issues. First when I took the head off I noticed that the cylinder had a lot of burnt crud all over it. (I will check for scoring thanks to your video) Is that something I can clean? or do I replace the cylinder? Next question. Do you know anything about the Morini M01 engine? If so how do you check the points? I cant seem to see them through the fly wheel.
@TravisTutorial
@TravisTutorial 8 жыл бұрын
I would say you made the right choice! The M01 is a better motor than the G2 motor on the Moto Guzzi to start out with. As far as the cylinder, carbon buildup is pretty normal because all two strokes are just dirty, plus the oil they had back in the day was pretty crude, so long it wasn't seized it is probably fine. I had an M01 on a Bianchi moped a few years ago, fairly robust little motor. Italian mopeds always have little bitty flywheel windows, you'll have to really fiddle with it, but you should be able to check/adjust without having to buy a flywheel puller.

Hey great videos! I have a puch maxi and I don't know if its getting gas.. when petcock is in the on position nothing drips out ? Does it need replaced? Or is it vacuum operated?
@TravisTutorial
@TravisTutorial 11 жыл бұрын
100% Gravity - Petcock could definitely be clogged, you could take it apart since they're pretty simple, or you could replace, the "puch maxi gold petcock" on Treatland.tv is a fine replacement. If you take the petcock off and gas comes pouring out make sure it's clear and free of debris.
