I bought an Apocalypse with natural micarta and the apocalypse finish. It's a DLC coating that just gives the knife a cool weathered and rusty vibe. Elmax of course doesn't really need the coating, but it looks cool. I recently bought the TRC K-1s with the same finishes.

@@PinkG10 I love it. The weight, fit and finish...it is such a superior piece of equipment. I like everything about it. But I find myself wondering what it would be like with a convex blade. I just saw that another KZbin channel has a shop and sells one with a convex blade. I'd really like to know how that compares with the standard model. While I was using it, it reminded me of the Fallkniven A1, just with far superior materials and craftsmanship. I would love to see whether the convex blade adds anything to this amazing, darn neat perfect knife. Thanks again for your awesome reviews!!

Thank you very much for those kind words! I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to do a few different videos, around 10-15 minutes, or one long, full review. I'm also not sure whether or not I should have speeded up certain parts of the video, but it is what it is. I doubt many people will watch the complete video from start to finish, but for those who like lengthy, in-detail reviews, then I guess this could be a nice way to spend 1 hour and 20 minutes. And for those who want to see some quick action or specific parts, well, there is a "content-section" so they can pick out what they like/want to see. Regardless, I had a very nice time making this video review, I love the knife and I look forward to use it a lot this winter!

That’s a really great knife! Perfectly manufactured as well. Not to mention the different limited designs they played with. I find your way of approaching this review quite educational. When I buy a knife, I usually just start using it, only just I had a body count of hundreds of other people’s videos as reference. So, thank you for your work! My dream knife is a Winkler belt knife. Terrific looking and performing knife. I like the sheath as well. You could feel confident going into the woods with this knife and sheath that making shelter and fire will be relatively easy compared to other, maybe smaller knives. A smaller knife with the same design and no choil would make a great companion blade. Thanks for sharing it with us in the US.

Agreed! If you check out TRCs lineup, their South Pole knife is thematically similar to the Apocalypse but scaled down to 4.5" blade and 9.25" OAL. (Also Elmax, like the Apocalypse...) Otherwise, all of their designs have similar fit/finish, similar bold and attractive proportions, and beautifully crisp, symmetrical and sharp grind lines and pristine satin finishes. Hard to go wrong with TRC. Elmax is a Böhler steel and is more common in europe. I only have one elmax knife in a vast collection. When I get my big-ass Apocalypse slab-o'-Elmax, I'll feel like I'm cornering the market in that beautiful, fine-grained supersteel!

The work you put into detailing “Chapters” to aid in picking/choosing which sections or aspects of your detailed [& (if I may) examination of this beautiful Fixed blade knife are impressive & well thought out. I’ve known of these TRC Knife Makers for awhile and though I lean towards my fellow countrymen’s blade efforts (I’m from the Southeastern part [Georgia] of the U.S. of America), these guys produce blades equal to ANY of the BEST KNIVES AROUND..!!! I have a Zero Tolerance 0561 (Now Discontinued) folder w/ a blade made of Elmax ~ just like this Apocalypse and it’s a tough steel to sharpen, yet it keeps an edge very well, of course ~ b/c they offset one another! Your video’s quality is First Rate and the way you’ve organized it keeps me interested ‘till the end. Thank YOU for detailing in such engaging fashion the TRC Apocalypse.🇺🇸

I love mine, I have the black micarta handles with the apocalypse finish. I found the factory edge wicked sharp, but lacking for woodworking/ wood processing and put a convex edge on my knife and holy crap that made a world of difference! It destroys wood with ease. I do think it’s more combat oriented but it definitely holds it own in the woods. It’s a great dual purpose knife.

This is exactly what I plan to do to mine once I get it (convex it). Wish I had gotten the DBK version which came with a nice convex from the factory! Have you had any issues with chipping now that you've thinned it out? Did you keep the final edge angle the same and just blend the shoulders in with the primary grind and factory edge bevel or did you also go more acute on the final edge angle by blending the primary grind into a new more acute edge bevel?

Thank you for the great video. Just to the price and comparison with BR Survivor and Crusader (mention in discusion). This knife as I can buy it, is more expensive the generaly every BR knife. If BR starts to use the Crusader handle shape for next gen. Survivor, that Survovor, in my eyes, beats this Apocalypse, just because over USD 100 saved in my pocket, 3V and their convex:-) Just my opinion. BUT, the Apocalypse is great knife, no doubt:-) FM

I like the Crusader a lot. I relly do. The Survivor, on the other hand, while it's indeed a tough workhorse of a knife, in my favorite steel at that and with full convex grind, it never spoke to me in the way many of my other medium-large size knives does. The handle doesn't feel 100% right for chopping, but switching to gloves improve that feeling a bit. All in all, the Apocalypse is probably one of the biggest surprises for me this year. I almost feel like they designed it for me, and I might even have to get a second one, maybe with a full convex grind this time around?

Hi! I am planning on buying this knife and first of all, I would like to ask you if you're still happy with it and if the sharpening part is not too hard? Then, I have the possibility to take one with g10 handles and I would like your opinion about it since you got to play with it, would you recommend the original version with micarta or do you feel it would be better with g10? Finally, what do you think about the signature edition, is satin finition better? Thank you!
@PinkG10
@PinkG10 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! I've now owned and actively used my Apocalypse for a few months, and it's still one of my favorite knives of all the knives I own. I've not had to do any real sharpening, just light touch ups - which was not really necessary to begin with. The edge retention is great, and I expected it to be that since the blade steel used is Elmax. In regards of your handle-choice; I have tons of knives in Micarta and I have tons of knives in G10. To me, there's not that much of a difference in comfort nor strength/durability. Is there going to be a difference and/or specific pattern or roughness between the Micarta-version and the G10-version? I have seen a few photos of the Signature Edition, and while it does look really nice, I do think I prefer the satin finish better. But in actual performance, there'll be no differences. Oh, I've gotten some minor scratches on the blade from the Kydex-sheath (which was to be expected), and those scratches might be more visible on the Signature Edition. I think you should go with the knife you like the looks of the best; the user performance will be pretty much identical regardless.

that is a nice knife, but it seems to be designed for aesthetic purposes as opposed to a true knife. They completely botched up the spine which makes no sense. I use the spine for many outdoor purposes that this knife cannot do. I use the spine to scrape many different things in survival situations that includes scraping a ferrocerium rod. Most importantly I use the spine to scrape fatwood, cedar bark, and birch bark to achieve a quick ignition with starting a fire. I can also use the square spine of a hefty knife such as the Apocalypse and a Fallkniven A1 Pro/X to hammer a stake or open a walnut, which would be alot easier if the spine was not beveled. A square spine is as useful as the cutting edge, i don't see why they decided to bevel the spine for any other reasons except for looks, which is unfortunate for an otherwise great knife.

Perhaps you're right, as a decent ESEE, etc. would perform. However, it really is well-priced for what it is if you look at the upper end of that market. Also, I have put my life at the mercy of a similar quality knife or two and it changes your perception of what "expensive" is when it comes to survival gear (or military hardware). I wish all could have knives like this because it is a huge comfort having reliable, effective, bulletproof gear (and having 'tools' like these is almost an education in good design and materiel science).

It's expensive from a more "general perspective" perhaps, but seeing the actual quality of the craftsmanship, makes me think that the knife is actally not that expensive at all. I think Axe Guy puts it quite wel tbh. Still, it's a lot of money to spend.

how does this compare to the Bark River Survivor?
@PinkG10
@PinkG10 4 жыл бұрын
I actually prefer chopping with the Apocalypse, due to the handle-design. But the Survivor is the heavier hitter, being the heavier knife (almost 100grams heavier). If I could own only one of the two, I'd pick the Apocalypse. Both are very impressive knives, but the Survivor never really made it into my top favorites. The Crusader on the other hand ...

No problem! I'll say though, that it's been quite some time since I did some chopping with the Survivor. Maybe I should put them up against each other tomorrow, so I can give a more updated and fair verdict of sorts.

Oh, and one more thing, for hard/heavy tasks, I do feel more comfortable with CPM-3V. But I would still pick the Apocalypse over the Survivor.

I also realize that I read your question as which of the two is the better chopper, not sure why I did. Regardless, both are excellent knives, with their respective pros and cons.

For $450 the only thing you’ll be using that knife for is opening an occasional box or vegetable.

6.6mm of Elmax with 172mm edge length. this thing can be a perfect answer to survival purpose blade. pros: ・it is stainless. Helpful in wild ・Elmax tend to brittle with thin blade geometry but this knife can prevent it with 6.6mm thickness ・to penetrate "Animal" body, it requires least 10cm and this one has 17.2cm. of course best never happens. ・can fire steel with fore spine and choil. ・with 389g of weight, very helpful for chopping. cons: prepare Diamond sharpener.

I have one and i putted a secondary convex edge on it with a cheap 1000/4000 wet stone from amazon and a strop. Elmax is surprisingly easy to sharpen. I’d compare it to s35vn.

Interesting thing is this knife which cost 450$ comes from country where minimum wage is less than 500€ (excl. taxes). So basically it is real SURVIVAL knife. You spend your whole wage to buy a knife and try to survive the whole month with it.

Yeah, it's a bit on the lengthy the side. But there're a few other, much shorter reviews you can find here on YT. Oh, and you can also look at specific scenes of this video, using the "contents-part" in the top comment as well as in the video description. To sum it all up, though, the TRC Apocalypse is a stunning looking, great performing, very versatile knife in a fantastic steel. :)

a cheap Glock 78 knife is enough for everything in the video .. there is no justified price on the knife in the video... the real review of the knife would be (hardening quality and strength) if the knife was really tested to the limit

Why would I do that? Try to destroy a knife I bought for my own money? I buy a design (blade and handle), in a steel I like (Elmax) with ergos that I really like and that match my preferences, that works fantastic for the kind of work I use the knife for. As simple as that.
