The Polished Edge

Күн бұрын

I apologize for the sound of the river. We were spending the day right next to it.
Anyways, here is a quick review and demo on the TRC Apocalypse blade.
Few key points.
The few tasks thrown at it are tasks that an individual in our tropical jungle would perform regularly.
Certain tasks were chosen to test the boundaries of the blade, doing something it was not meant to do.
My opinions and critiques are a personal preference, this will vary from individual to individual.

Thanks! yeah, on hindsight, it's a bit quieter up river. I'm looking into investing in a bluetooth mic as well, just in case.

Hey man, great review (other than the river noise :)) Since it seems, at least from your other comments, very extensive knowledge and i'm in the shop for an "higher end ultimate do all big but not too much survival knife", i'd like to ask for some thoughts on the 3 i've narrowed it down to: TRC Apocalypse, Chris Reeve Pacific and Busse Forsaken Steel Heart they're as different as they are similar, i know :D

Hi there! thanks for watching. I've since sorted out river sound issues by getting a lav mic hahaha about time huh. Of the 3, the Chris Reeve is immediately eliminated. I know their steels are still grossly under-hardened. If they want toughness and ease of sharpening, get a carbon steel, if they want it to use s35vn, harden it up to 60 at least. And those serrations, just a waste of edge space. It's such a coincidence you bring this up, as i just sharpened a CRK Pacific this morning, and will do the Green Beret in the coming days. I'd say between the Busse and TRC its a toss up. Busse will end up being the tougher of the 2, but the TRC won't rust like it will and with better edge retention. I'm not sure if the Forsaken Steel Heart has an SR101 variant, but that'd be the steel i'd pick. You get better edge retention from SR101 compared to INFI, and better toughness from INFI, but SR101 is already plenty tough for most uses. The first sharpen for any Busse's going to be a bit of a punishment. The grinds are thick, wide, convexed and a bit obtuse. SR101 will have good toughness and edge stability, so it'll definitely take on a finer edge without issue. INFI will also take on a fine edge, but will lose it a little faster. TRC has the huge advantage of being rust resistant, and with significantly better edge retention at that. I know some people might say that rust isn't and issue, and for the most part, i do agree, but when your blade starts to rust and you're in a high stress condition, it could mess with the nerves. One thing also, if you do get an Apocalypse, avoid the Apocalyptic finish as it's pretty much pre-rusted for you. If it were up to me, i'd still stick to the Apocalypse for the rust resistance and edge retention. The blades thick enough to take a lot of abuse, more than i could likely hurl at it, as is the case, any additional toughness could be seen as depreciating returns, and i might as well have the extra rust resistance and edge retention. Hope that helps.

@@The_Polished_Edge that helped a lot, thank you! TRC has also the advantage of being more affordable and much easier to acquire, as the Steel Heart is only on the secondary market and not a common sight in Europe. but the Busse is so goddamned sexy.... thanks again :)

@@praetor47 Yeah, and i think TRC jsut released a batch of Apocalypses, maybe you can send Andrius a dm and see if he can hook you up. I don't deny, Busse's have that tough guy badass feel to them, and i do miss my hellrazor sometimes. Good luck with whichever you decide to get, they will be both good choices =)

Nice review man! You mentioned that you prefer AEBL over Elmax. How does AEBL corrosion resistance compare to elmax's?
@The_Polished_Edge
@The_Polished_Edge 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude. I don't think I said I prefer one over the other. But AEB-L, in my opinion, and all things equal, would have better edge stability and toughness than Elmax, though at this thickness, it'd be insanely hard to break elmax. That being said, elmax would have much much better edge retention.

Trying to decide between this knife and fallkniven a1 pro. Thoughts anyone?
@The_Polished_Edge
@The_Polished_Edge 5 жыл бұрын
The Apocalypse would be my choice. Better edge retention, tougher handle, better sheath added finger choil. A1 pro is 7mm thick vs the 6.3mm in the Apocalypse. 0.25 inches is already more than plenty, anything more than that would impede fine work and slicing. The grind on the A1 is convexed, and it tapers lower than the Apocalypse does, further thickening the edge. I know some would argue that it's a zero convex/scandi grind and would Excel at carving and batoning, but I would rather sacrifice some over the top toughness, which I probably won't need, for a more versatile blade.
@zero-ol2nt

@@The_Polished_Edge Yea that's my whole thing. I want it to baton well and chop somewhat decently. I was thinking the a1pro would do well for that with it being thicker blade however I like the thicker top on the tip of the apocalypse. I think that's is a great design feature. I definitely give the design aesthetics to the apocalypse. Also looking into the bark river survivor in 3v.
@The_Polished_Edge

@@zero-ol2nt i've chopped with a regular A1 before, and perhaps it wasn't sharpened right (not mine), but it kinda bounced off the wood. To a certain point, a thicker geometry would start to work against the blade. Before you get a BRK, read up on some controversy with their post HT grinding. Also, 3V wouldn't give you nearly as much edge retention as elmax would. It's another case of being tougher than we need. The survivor chops pretty well though, and being a quarter inch thick, like the apocalypse, it would baton well. At the risk of sounding like a hardsell (TRC doesn't pay me), I have access to all 3 blades, and more. This was my decision for many reasons, most you will see in the video. Are there other similar knives that i would get/own, that i would review? Yes. Would it be better than the Apocalypse? maybe, maybe not, but it sure set the bar high.

@@zero-ol2nt the A1 standard (limited), survivor (had a few days with it), Apocalypse (yep). I'd say my judgement of the A1 pro might not be reliable, but from the few times I've tried it, I was not impressed. From my observations, it just does not tell me that it will be a superb knife. A good one? Sure. But for that kind of pricing? I'm expecting a lot more.
