TRDQ: GoBots Thruster Review - The Renegade HQ and Big Pal!

Great video! Without having one of these in front of you it is hard to apprecate how massive they are. I picked Thruster and the Command Center up a few years back and immediately resold them as they were far too big for a one bedroom flat. Now I have them again and can't wait to display them together.

The 80's play set checklist on Thruster: elevator/lift, check trap door, check jail, prison, dungeon, check electronic feature, check command section, throne room, double check med or repair bay, no check secret entrance, no check Still a pretty good play set that covers most of the boxes.

I've always loved that the Go Bot toys just stuck to looking like robots. They don't all have human faces, shapes, hands, feet etc. They are more alien than most transformers.

A lot of playsets need that special something to make them stand out as a good toy, I've been thinking. The Gobots having a command center that's a giant robot you can interact with almost quite hits it. That sound feature would have been a plus if it didn't become a minus real quick.

God, I just saw a tiny Cy-kill in a shop, and I was so tempted, but he was too expensive to justify, so I got Crasher instead. There was a whole set of the small ones, I'm heavily considering going back to get Vamp.

How many parents bitterly regretted their choices on Xmas morning when they heard the sensor alarm on this toy for the 100th time? Probably not too many of these left due to quite a few disappearing mysteriously into a skip...sorry, "flown off into space" as they told the kids on New Years.

Haven’t heard much talk about that play set. It’s usually the Command Center most Gobots fans care about. Looks like a neat toy still. The head reminds me of certain Bionicle characters.

Interestingly Machine Robo Rescue, a sequel to Machine Robo (The origin of Gobots) also had huge transport robots. Their robot modes were a little better, but still pretty much a giant brick with two moving arms when it came to articulation, fortunately there were no extremely loud battery features.

Somehow, despite having a lower-lower-lower-middle class upbringing, I had both the Command Center _and_ Thruster. That motion sensor alarm was not well-appreciated by the family.

I think I may have been the only kid who liked the Renegade Command Center over the Guardian. It was a cool looking SPACESHIP! It had a "ROBOT MODE." And it had what could be said to be more neat imaginative play features. Every time I see it, I just wish I had it as a kid! Even today, I would love to get one, but gotta put the kids through college now, and buy groceries, and pay bills, and dive to work, and ...I hate being an adult!

I wonder if the designers had second thoughts about the base/bot mode of Thruster, cuz it's only featured in the original mini-series. (Just gonna blurt out this unpopular opinion: I like the "Challenge of the Go-Bots" show more than G1 Transformers.)

The biggest Gobot toys look daft compared to their titanic Transformers counterparts but have one important advantage - they have _insides_ for smaller toys to be placed in and seen.
