Gavin, please. I don't cry that much. I cry more than that! I wasn't too sure I felt too won over by the concept of the toy until you revealed its plug and play feature, which has certainly intrigued me over into seeing more of what Webdiver is all about. Finding new ways to make a toy have extra features and gimmicks that are also fun is quite a tall order in itself.

I remember seeing this and thinking how it was a novel idea. I also heard that the game was finicky. Tranforming the toy would sometimes mess up in the game and everything wouldn't work right. Neat idea, but an execution ahead of its time. Once again, Great review. (And you were scarring me with that hammer around that toy, but in a good, "Oh Gavin wouldn't smash that toy to bits...would he?" Kind of way.

The early 2000s was the absolute peak for toy gimmicks IMO. I’m not saying the best ones, but the most over-the-top features came around that time for sure.

I remember Webdivers at the time but had no idea there was a videogame built in! Such a cool gimmick and definitely different. I think you might be suffering with NTSC>PAL issues with your setup and that's the reason for the B&W. Maybe get round it by using an analog capture card if you've got an old one kicking around.

Webdiver was such a fun line. apparently Hasbro had ideas about importing it as part of RID2001 or Universe 2003 at some point but cowardice took them and it never happened. damn shame, as i assume that would have made obtaining a Wyverion so much easier than it is now. I would commit so many War Crimes to obtain a Wyverion.....

@manjackson2772Ай бұрын
It's a Takara project so Hasbro would have been the ones to do it. Aaron Archer has mentioned a couple of times that they considered it but ultimately passed on it. I wonder if they were thinking about the failure of Lego's Galidor, which had a kind of similar centerpiece toy with electronic games in its guts.

Gavin, I got a question. While we all know that you are _the best_ transformers KZbinr, perhaps more than Hasbro themselves, do you have any others who you would say are as good, or, god forbid, better? I was going to say “Gav forbid” but I’m not gonna strike your ego THAT much. Also, I recently met my Roomate, who’s ALSO Gavin, and thanks to your meddling, I’ve started calling him “g-ah-vin”

The broken joints are pretty much universal due to the translucent material used being pretty crap. Mine that I only bought a few years after release were already cracked and rattling inside the box. It's pretty baffling that the bootleg of it (of course with a Thomas the Tank Engine face on the shield part) is actually more durable than the real thing.

Webdiver was pretty hit/miss. The idea of them being animal people gave them a lot of identity, but some of the animal modes were pretty naft. The idea that they could turn into galleons or prop planes because they're web things was also great. There were weapon third modes and combination gimmicks too, like a two of the toys were headmasters for a bigger guy and there were two dogs that symmetrically docked, and they were... okay. But I don't think the video game gimmick did much besides run the prices on them up. There were better options for playing video games even back then, and it hampers everything to have to have so much electronics in the budget. It could have worked if they had gone with roleplay toys like Kamen Rider because those are already full of electronics... but I don't think Kamen Riders revival had even started back then, much less become the winning formula it is now. Toyline had a follow up, I think it was Gravion or something, but I've only seen the toys on a page back in the day and they pretty ugly and unappealing despite having transformers type engineering and combination gimmicks. Also pretty fragile from what I've heard.
