I used to love this show as a kid. When I was about 25 my next door neighbour who was in his 80's told me about all these diamonds and jewels and gold he and his friends stole in Germany in the war in the 1940's. I know where it is but because I live in the UK I can't be bothered to go and dig it up. But it's there.

Joyous television from a more innocent age. Just lovely to watch. This was a tough challenge though, not a lot of time was wasted, and they were still nowhere near completing. The rowing boat on the loch on the penultimate clue was a killer: the best part of three minutes each way. They covered a lot of ground too. What a beautiful location!

Completely agree. Really enjoyed the programme but I don't see how they could've completed the game in time. A bit unfair I feel.

I think most of the Treasure's were lost due to Annie's dragging it all out, I'd say 1-2 minutes per clue, which is what most of the contestants needed to win, I'm sure I remember my Granny shouting at the screen "come on Anneka, stop messing about!!" lol. A truly extraordinary show & I imagine utterly unrepeatable in the modern day, loved this as a child, although the clues were impenetrable; the theme still sends shivers. Thanks for the UL.

Absolutely!!! I have vivid memories of my parents watching this... "What's she doing?? Why isn't she getting into the helicopter?" "She's still running around asking people... can't she hear the instructions?" I think to be honest she probably didn't always hear the studio clearly, and a lot of time was lost that way. Very frustrating, but all part of the fun I guess!!!

Considering that they were only a minute behind schedule after solving the third clue, it's hard to see how there would have been enough time to find the treasure considering how long it took to row to the fishing boat and back to find the final clue.

Very nice series of old-both when it was on Channel 4 and later on BBC2 as well. Also of course the presenters and the ladies who flew around too. Thank you!

Thank you! As we know, Anneka Rice was in the skies from 1982 to 1988; in its last series in 1989 it was Annabel Croft before she then went to ITV for the short-lived series Interceptor at the time. Kenneth Kendall, who before had been on the BBC News, presented it in the studio. That was on Channel 4; when BBC2 revived the series in 2002-2003, Suzi Perry was in the skies, whilst Dermot Murnaghan was in the studio. I had an e-mail letter published in the Radio Times at the time asking whether there would be anymore; but alas I know they too then cancelled the later series, which was a shame really too of course.

Both series were made by Chatsworth Television as far as I know too; and produced by Malcolm Heyworth if I am right on that too.

I know I used to record the series when it was on on the then VHS video tapes; then we-my Mum, Dad and I-would see them at a later time. Also, we would fast forward the ads on there at the time really! Sadly though, my Mum and Dad are not here now, but of course I am glad for the memories here too!

It's only now dawned on me that the entire helicopter crew, other than Anneka, knew precisely where they were going and where to land even though they pretended they didn't. They all knew they had to stay in the helicopter for the rock climb, for instance, and they must have rehearsed filming it in advance otherwise it would have been a total disaster.
@PaulTaylor13 жыл бұрын
I think the camera man knew too. Quite often he knew exactly where to look, while Anneka was still trying to guess!

@@PaulTaylor1 According to wikipedia - "According to a "making of Treasure Hunt" programme, Anneka Rice was confined to the hotel on the day that the camera operator, video and sound recordist; and helicopter pilot undertook a rehearsal (typically the day before the programme was recorded), so she had no advance knowledge of the locations. "

Somewhere, I still have a ye-olde Treasure Hunt annual, from the mid 80's. It documents the whole process in fascinating detail, the pre-production preparation was immense. The whole location crew were very well rehearsed and knowledgeable of where and how filming would be taking place. Of course, owners of land and property needed to be aware that Treasure Hunt would be filming there but the secret had to be kept with only those who needed to know. There was one instance where a castle, or something, actually announced on a placard that Anneka Rice and Treasure Hunt would be arriving later that day, and when word got to the producers they decided that the sworn secrecy had been breached and cancelled the recording there. I think a backup location was used, in place.

Before they filmed, the production team did a "recce" to make sure it was possible for Annie to find the prize in the time alloted.

Presumably this was all pre-arranged, as they couldn't possibly let it randomly hinge on wether there was a fishing boat available or not.

They would all be there waiting, and presumably the helicopter pilot had run the route too, but they probably could not travel to the spot until the team told them to. So as with the opening of this episode when they are told to fly in entirely the opposite direction for a while, there were probably people screaming at them to get it right. Its fun to notice the moments in this episode where Wincey Willis decides to step in and bluntly guide the contestants in the right direction!

@@PaulTaylor1 Boosting the audio would also boost the audio artefacts from the old tape and broadcast, you're better off leaving it tbh. You'd have to really mess with the audio in order to boost it properly, you'd essentially be remastering the audio to some degree. If you ever did want to try that though, feel free to send me the audio, I'd give it a go.
