The Empire of Wagandu (Ghana) was established before the Arabs arrived and on their way to litteracy, having developed symbols. Wagandu had cities and urban centres. Even after Arabs arrived some elements of Juju (Vodoo) survived even with Islam. Now, The University of Sankoore was the third University in the world with 25,000 scholars at its peak. Asking if these scholars were black is like asking if the kangaroo lives in Australia. THIS WAS THE HEART OF WEST AFRICA....

West Africa needs to reunite and realize their potential. Rebuild the Mali, Ghana, and Songhai Empires of the past. Too many landlocked nations that can't feed or trade in Africa. Too many ethnic divisions. Unity is the only cure. That unity once made West Africa great.

Enough of western educational institution forcing pupils of every background to learn about the Roman and Greek cultures, gods and accomplishments. The pupils need to have a choice as to what to learn. We need to know about Africa's influence and contribution to the world in the past and today.

@smoothnubian - The majority of these racist individuals in this forum don't even bother to study history before making a comment about it. The Mande' people who built the Ancient Malian empire were my ancestors, and I know a great deal about our history. Many of the scrolls that are described as being written in Arabic, are in fact written in Mande' (Manden ka), or Dogo (the original language of the Mani people), using the Arabic alphabet only, but not the language its self.

Contrary to what this jerk theSOASstudent is saying, the greatest thing about African scholarship is knowing not only that it is original but that our ancestors genuinely sought knowledge and distributed it peacefully and amicably. we should be proud of that intellectual heritage alone as other nations tended to force ideals upon others. the centers at Ra'Kedet and Timbuktu were genuine centers for learning while other ancient Universities held agendas such as Greeks' ethnocentric Akademia.

@jamrock1ful - cont... Also, not one single non-Mande person ever ruled the Ancient Malian Empire. The only reason they converted to Islam was to expand trade into North Africa. The reason they wrote many of their scrolls in Arabic, was because that was the language of the quran, and was more widely known by the various groups living in the Empire. All of the various Mande groups had their own Poro/Sande-related writing systems though. Also, they were never slaves to any Arabs. That's insane.

@courtesy55 Exactly correct. It's a clear distortion that claims Malian culture was Arab/Islamic based; it was not; the common people did not celebrate it as a regular practice, and, as ancestor 's Chiek Anta Diop and Ivan Van Sertima have asserted, was only used by the government, then, for trade purposes (Arabs controlled most of the trade routes which dealt with the transfer of goods from Africa, Europe and Asia then).

@smoothnubian - cont... A modern equivalent of this would be how we English speakers can recognize most or all of the letters used in the Spanish, French, etc., written languages, but cannot necessarily understand the words formed, using those letters that we recognize. In addition, many of the scrolls in Timbuktu and other places in Mali, were written in indigenous scripts. There are many written languages indigenous to Africa: Adinkra, Tifingh, Ethiopic, etc., some people are just uneducated.

this is cool stuff. Africa has a unique history of it's own, arguably influenced by Islam but not anymore than Northern Europe is influenced by the ancient Greeks and Romans. It's cool to see that this did not go the way of the dodo, if Africa would have any chance to re-find it's past greatness, it is only through re-discovering it's past and trying to revive it's this culture--not some faux-european derived culture. i'm not African but i find this hella is cool.

@jamrock1ful - Timbuktu was a Tuareg-Berber seasonal encampment that was annexed by Mansa Musa (a Mande' King) and made part of the Ancient Malian Empire. Immediately following his annexation of Timbuktu, Mansa Musa ordered the building of a palace, universities, and mosques, and sent hundreds, if not thousands of scholars to teach and live there. Arabs had nothing to do with it. You won't find a SINGLE historic reference to any Arabs ever conquering, or controlling Ancient Mali.

you are incorrect. the arabs did not take over any of the Mande kingdoms (Pre Manden, Wagadu, Mali, Songhai). Timbuktu was originally a Tuareg encampment that was annexed by Mansa Musa, who was a king of Manden, and transformed into a place of scholarship. the written history of Manden is contained in scrolls similar to the ones in this video, in the languages of the old empires (Soninke', Mandinka, Bambara, Dogo, Tamashek, etc).
