So for the sake of not being a part of New York, Vermont declared independence and rejoined the US?

What isn't well known about Vermont (and Kentucky) becoming a state is that Vermont actually ratified the US Constitution. Vermont and Kentucky were the last two states to ratify the Constitution to become states. In fact, if Vermont had ratified the Constitution a few weeks earlier, it could have been the 13th state ahead of Rhode Island. This is the reason the flag that flew over Ft. McHenry during the War of 1812 had 15 stars and 15 stripes even though we had 18 states at the time.

Actually, between the declaring of independence on July 2, 1776 (yes, that is the correct date, July 4th saw the passing of the official press release about the vote on the 2nd) and March 1, 1781 when the first constitution, the Articles of Confederation, went into effect the 13 former colonies were de facto 13 individual nations in a military alliance (think World War II alliance of the US & the UK).

If Texas wanted help and couldn't get it from the U.S. at first because of antislavery, and thus turned to Great Britain for help, I'm surprised that that didn't result in Great Britain gaining Texas instead of America.
