I'm from Santa Rosa which is the most populated city in Sonoma County by far and the most populated city in wine country, but Sonoma is actually just one town east. It's very nice there and where their beautiful Central Park is there are buildings there that are of an old west style that have restaurants and even an Inn.

What isn't well known about Vermont (and Kentucky) becoming a state is that Vermont actually ratified the US Constitution. Vermont and Kentucky were the last two states to ratify the Constitution to become states. In fact, if Vermont had ratified the Constitution a few weeks earlier, it could have been the 13th state ahead of Rhode Island. This is the reason the flag that flew over Ft. McHenry during the War of 1812 had 15 stars and 15 stripes even though we had 18 states at the time.

Actually, between the declaring of independence on July 2, 1776 (yes, that is the correct date, July 4th saw the passing of the official press release about the vote on the 2nd) and March 1, 1781 when the first constitution, the Articles of Confederation, went into effect the 13 former colonies were de facto 13 individual nations in a military alliance (think World War II alliance of the US & the UK).

I would say technically all if the first 15 or so states (before the constitution was ratified) were independent... also possinly all the states that seceded but before the CSA was created would have technically been independent at one point, I would add also possibly the country of Deseret (SP?) Which was the independent Mormon Nation in the southwest which included modern Utah and parts of modern Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona...which the US actually fought a war against before becoming part of America...
