Where's all the trees at? Did the kiwi's pull an Easter island and cut down everything?

Most mountains in New Zealand south island have no trees as the mountains are rock mountains. Only native nz grass type plants live on the high country environment

We don't tend to get snowfall at the tree line like in the European Alps or Canadian resorts. The snow line is getting higher every year unfortunately.
