Sorry for your loss. My son worked for Asplundh for years before he went to IBEW to apprentice as lineman. He saved many of his neighbor's lives by cutting down their backyard trees. They have no clue what they're doing. It's no joke.

One semi large branch could make a tree go the wrong direction with a good wedge. Also don't stand behind trees like he did it could barber chair on you and take you out. Ive cut many trees in my day.

He had cut the relief properly, but didn't consider the weight of the tree was mostly on the side of the fence which is why it fell in that direction.

There was no hinge left, only a strong sliver. Which he easily broke with his wedge. It could have slid straight back and smoosed him. Total crap shoot on the way thay thing was falling. Horrible cuts, left plenty of unnecessary stress riser too.

No hinge to control direction, plus tree had some back lean causing it to settled back on his saw …with a proper hinge and wedging he could have ‘probably’ gotten it to fall the proper direction

Using a rope might have helped but he notched it wrong for one and he needed at least two wedges pounded in before even cutting through the tree. That's why the bar was pinched. My brother was a sawyer and owned his own logging business so I saw him put the tree right where he wanted it hundreds of times.

My former minister, just happily retired, after a long career was killed felling a tree on his own property. In the past we've hooked two ropes to two trucks. This helps, so does a guy operating the saw with some experience.

After such an awful box cut, only thing besides getting a crane or pro would be to re do the final back cut angling it away from fence. Make sure you always have a cleared path for a quick exit. Also, did he warn his family and neighbors to get out of their houses and watch the idiot show from the street?

I worked around a 30 something giy who was pulling a stimp out with his truck and had the door open with his head between the door and the truck. Stump broke free door slammed on his head. You know the rest of the story. Nice guy to work around too. What a shame! 😢

the right form is to tie a rope on the branch of tree, and when the cut is done do you pull the rope in the direction that you want that it drop

You just have to cut it properly. This dufus cut the high side of his hinge so it fell sideways

Life expectancy doing that is about as good as that section of fence. The right way to handle it is to cut the far side of the tree to weaken the hinge when the wedge was in only about 4 inches. He would have had a lot better directional control and personally, a lot safer. Some knowledge is only gained through experience, and as Ben Franklin said, experience keeps a dear school... I'll let you look up the rest of that quote on your own.
