We had a Robin nest in my wrapped up, perfect nesting house of a fern tree. 6 robins later it’s doing really well and in the next feed weeks will show a lot more. It was a bit stressful wondering if the growth would evict the baby’s before they fledge 😮. I hope for a new nest next year now as all worked out really well.

I’ve got a very small about 6 inches trunk that I got last year. It was in a self watering north facing trough until Feb but the other ferns were crowding it out so I’ve put it into it’s own self watering tub in a sunnier spot for the time being. The interesting thing was the roots migrated across the trough to the shadier part. So I now know the conditions its roots prefer. The leaves were green until just before I repotted it so I had to cut them off anyway. Didn’t think 14:00 to use them as mulch but will in the future. As the weather warms up I’ll move this baby back to its previous happy place near its north facing ferny friends.

Brilliant content Kris, we have a three foot dicksonia with a immense trunk to get in the ground, I really underestimated its weight! Quite the thing to manipulate around how you want it.

A wonderful vid Chris thank you!! 🫶 I’m leaving my fronds on this year to see if I like that…she’s centre front in our small garden so I think she’ll need the moisture over the summer! I appreciate all your info thanks so much

My young Cyathea Cooperi will be planted out for the first time in a week of 2, the weather is pretty mild in NL so I put it and my Jacaranda outside for the first time today during the day. If the forecast still is mild then I am taking my chances and protect the plant if late frost would come.. it's still young, so not quite a tree yet :) it will be sheltered and in shade until halfway through the afternoon

Good luck with the cooperi, it's possibly the hardiest of the Cyatheas but still classed as half hardy

I used to cut leaves off but found the crown diameter gradually decreased. Did see somewhere that leaving leaves on helps to maintain the crown growth area which is critical for the tree fern to survive. Decreasing crown area could also be insufficient watering I guess. Any tips on maintaining the growth area would be appreciated

Thanks for the information Kris, just planted my first Dicksonia Antarctica (4ft), fonds already uncurling. I’d welcome your opinion/ advice on how close they could be planted together? I’d love to create a tiered height look with a smaller 2ft or 1ft Dicksonia underneath my 4ft, but unsure on planting space apart (and crown space apart) they would require. Many Thanks.

I'm not very good with Tree ferns, they don't like me! But I have a Dicksonia Antarctica that's seems to be doing well in a very big container. I wish I had more green fingers like you.

Hi Kris. My 6ft tree fern is being raided by a squirrel which has already dug up a lot of my bulbs and eaten tulip flowers and now it seems to be going for the newly emerging fronds and knuckles in my dicksonia. Any tips to prevent squirrel? It’s going to kill or eat the new fern growth! Cheshire Uk

Chicken wire over the centre should help for a while until the fronds really emerge

Hi I have a 2 foot tree fern in the ground , for the last 2 years it hasn't produced any fronds so could you please advise me what I should do
@YorkshireKRIS

It should produce new growth every year so it's likely that it's died unfortunately

They can go dormant for quite a while if very dry but with all the rain we had over winter and spring then I would have expected a flush starting by now
