🌳🌳🌳🌳 Learn how to tell black walnut from another common native tree it often is found growing with in this video: • Black Walnut vs Black ... 🌳🌳🌳🌳
One of the questions I get often about invasive species is how to tell the invasive tree of heaven, Ailanthus altissima, from the native black walnut, Juglans nigra. While these two trees look similar from a distance, there are some easy to learn characteristics that can be used to tell them apart. I cover several of these in this video and include ways to identify these two species even after the leaves fall.

@@lauriegashinski5741 I may be able to put one together over the summer - if I can find a butternut tree to film. They are few and far between around here.

What a fantastic resource! Thanks for this. I have baby black walnut trees popping up in my garden. I’ll use this info to double check their identification.

Thanks for these videos! Straight and to the point. I've been struggling with this ID for almost a decade. Fortunately, there's not much Tree of Heaven in my town, so I've never really seen one up close.

So by the smooth vs toothed leaves I know it’s a tree of heaven I’m seeing with lighter green seed clusters hanging all over it. I always wondered.. thanks again! Subbed!

Hi! ❤🎉loving this tree identity video! So well done and useful. We have a new volunteer tree in our front yard. It is vigorous and now about 5 ft high. We could not find much to help us figure out what tree it is..but after finding your excellent video we see it's a Black Walnut!

the tree of heaven leaves often have that distinct single serration near the base that's a dead giveaway
@BackyardEcology
@BackyardEcology 3 ай бұрын
Most of the time that is a quick way to tell them apart. Occasionally TOH leaves lack the teeth, or at least the leaves that can be reached do. Since winter is the prime time to control TOH ID by bark and twigs is super important.
@joemilton7552
@joemilton7552 3 ай бұрын
@@BackyardEcology Right on! Didn't know about the bundle scar distinction, that's a good one. You mentioned the aroma of the leaves, same is true for branches and bark if you cut into it, tree of heaven kind of smells like rancid peanutbutter. What control method are you usually using? I see in that one graphic it looks like spraying the base, what do you spray them with, and are you hacking them first?
@BackyardEcology
@BackyardEcology 3 ай бұрын
@@joemilton7552 Basal bark treatment is all I use on TOH. I don't use hack and squirt or cut stump as TOH has a massive sprout response to physical damage being done to it and shuts down translocation of nutrients (and therefor herbicide) when damaged. Triclopyr ester is the most commonly used herbicide for basal bark treatment of TOH but it depends on state regulations - best to ask your local extension office to see what the options are where you live.

Thanks for this video! How can you tell the saplings apart? I am having saplings popping up here and there in my yard, and I can’t tell which they belong to! They are a purplish color at first, and then turn green. The all have toothed edges.

The leaves should still have their distinctive smells - walnut leaves like walnut extract and tree of heaven just smells nasty like stale peanut butter.

I have a black walnut stump and now after many years there’s a new tree growing. It’s hard to tell if it’s a tree of heaven or the black walnut. I’m hoping with this information I will be able to tell the difference. Do you know how long it takes the walnut to bear fruit?
@BackyardEcology
@BackyardEcology 11 ай бұрын
Walnuts can bear nuts when quite young, but a a lot depends on the conditions where they are growing. There are some on our farm that are under 10 years old that are already bearing decent crops of nuts.

@@BackyardEcology I actually do not mind the smell. It is an insecticide (doesn't kill spotted lanterfly which loves tree of heaven). I have considered growing a tree of heaven in a pot (to try to keep the roots from spreading it) and experiment with ways to use the leaves to deal with insects (the biggest problem in our garden). There is no lack of volunteers, of course.
