@@BreatheChristian Snowpack can be several meters deep and the tree branches can keep the snow from packing in around the trunk. This creates a hole around the trunk that can be quite deep and fatal if you're alone and fall in head first. Been stuck in a shallow one upside down and I assure you that it is hard as hell to get out and an absolutely terrifying feeling, especially if there is loose snow falling into the hole.

This happened to a 27 year old snowboarder on Sunday morning, his friends reported him missing at one of our local ski resorts. He was found dead in a tree well last night. Which is why I looked up tree wells because I didn't know what it was (am not a downhill/backcountry skier myself). Glad to see a comment from someone that realizes this isn't a joking matter.

people miss the reason these are so dangerous. Its not being in a hole of snow. Its the chance that when you crash you release the snow from the tree burying you under 3-5 feet of heavy snow.

@@kleinkurti This kind of terrain is easily accessible in most resorts without needing to stray far from a groomed run at all. People die in tree Wells and deep snow banks right off the sides of groomed runs with people skiing by clueless to the fact that someone is suffocating right next to them. People skiing in resorts don't tend to carry avalanche equipment, and here it wouldn't have done much good. Always maintain line of sight, ski behind the weaker skiers, and carry radios. Those are you best tools in the resort when you're skiing somewhere that feels safe like these guys were, but in reality can be really dangerous. This guy handled it perfectly.
@jarnold17895 жыл бұрын
Having said that, instances like these are why I do choose to carry avalanche (beacon, shovel, probe) and safety equipment (first aid kit, whistle, radio) with me even when I ski "in bounds". I was a stupid dad also. When I was 26 my son was 8 and I learned him to snowboard in an inside ski center. In the end of the day we went boarding in the fun park. So stupid from me.. Today I would never do that. Luckily nothing happened other then my son flying true the air and landing on his board surprising himself and me. All the time he was in the air I thought nooooooooo!!! And then he landed it omg i was so stupid.

A dear friend's husband died in a tree well last weekend, while snowboarding with his two sons. My heart is broken for them. Thanks for posting this. I'm SO glad you were there to help and rescue your son. I'm also so glad your son was yelling for help and you heard him...!! I've been skiing for 50 years. I can ski anything. Nothing scares me except tree wells.

I got stuck in a tree well once. luckily my head was out of the snow so it wasn't scary at all, but it took me like twenty minutes to get out 😂.

Judging by how the kid was skiing in the beginning, he didn't have the skill to have control and he should not have been in e woods

Tree wells are terrifying. Was on a SAR team looking for a missing snowboarder in the early 90's in Colorado. Not found for two months, upside down in a tree well.

Happened to me when I was 12. I was pretty traumatized after and almost quit but ended up powering through. Now I’m 21 and when I look back at it, the experience made me respect how unforgiving nature can be.

I felt that "Ethan" with all my senses! Nothing in this life, and I mean NOTHING is scarier to a parent than seeing their children in harms way! This was terrifying and satisfying at the same time. It also showcase how careful we have to be as parents in such events, always be alert of where they are. Well done Dad. Ethan is also a brave kid for how he collected himself after almost losing his life being buried under snow.

Almost ended 2022 in a tree well today. Scariest experience in 30+ years of skiing. The more I tried to remove snow from my face the more fell down. Good thing I had buddies with me. After today I know I'll never ski the trees by myself!

This kid should not have been skiing trees. He's "pizza slicing" his turns, his upper body is out of control and this is all on powered rollers. I'm sorry, but anyone that skis can see he's not ready for tree situations where you need to dynamically change direction. Also his Dad said it "I'm so happy I was above you." At times the dad WASN'T. Not a good example all around.

+BattleRattle Oh jeez I bet you're a fun parent. Above everything you just said, the most important thing is to not ski alone. No need to wrap your kids up in bubble wrap if you're a good parent. Let them have fun, let them get scared to death, and they'll have cool stories to tell for the rest of their life.
@Tao_Peace8 жыл бұрын
+BattleRattle Couldn't agree more. Slicing with that type of terrain is a recipe for disaster let alone the terrain and trees. Why in the world would you have him go off a jump with trees at your 10,11 an 2 is beyond me. I'm always saddened here in Colorado when I hear of people dying from hitting trees each year.

This video was linked in an article about tree wells and until I read about them today, I had no idea there was such a hazard. It makes sense how they form and all, but Jesus! Getting launched into one with your head-down, unable to clear the snow to breathe is a terrifying prospect. I'm glad everyone in this video made it out okay. A young lady in MT was not so lucky recently. Be safe out there, folks!

This happened to me with no one to help. My ski's were caught on the tree stump I could not release my bindings. I was inverted with snow burying my head. Finally managed to release the binding by twisting my foot to pop the binding. I could breath then, but climbing out alone was another few minutes. I went home afterwards ;). Glad he is ok.
