TreeMapLA: How To Measure The Height of a Tree

By far, the most accurate way to measure the height of a tree, that is on an up or down slope is: 1) Chop the tree down. 2) Use a measuring tape to measure the trees horizontal length as it now lies on the ground. This will automatically cancel out any up or down degree of slope the tree was on. Then in one of those interesting quirks of math, the horizontal length of the tree will be exactly equal to what the vertical height was! Don’t forget to add the vertical height of the remaining stump to your total calculation. 🤜🤛

I like this method better than the stick method. The weak point might be having to hold the triangle level. A bubble level or even a level for your cellphone would help. You would also have to adjust measurement somehow for a tree on a slope or undulating ground with a tall tree.

Good question -if a tree is on a sharp slope. An what if the slope is too steep to even walk?

@@stephenpowstinger733 If the ground is flat below the bluff (where the tree is attached), measure from the ground, as if the trunk extends downward, to the base of the tree, as if that point is the top. Now, measure from the ground to the actual top of the tree. The rest is simple arithmetic, n'est ce pas?
