Siva (also spelt Shiva) is a 1989 Indian Telugu-language crime action film written and directed by Ram Gopal Varma in his directorial debut. Produced by Akkineni Venkat and Yarlagadda Surendra under their banners of Annapurna Studios and SS Creations, Siva stars Nagarjuna, Amala, and Raghuvaran. The film's basic plot, adapted from The Way of the Dragon (1972), revolves around the conflict between college student-turned-gangster Siva and Bhavani, a reputed crime boss mentored by the politician Machiraju. Siva explores the concepts of student exploitation by anti-social elements and the impact of crowd psychology.
Varma's script was based on his experiences as a student at Siddhartha Engineering College in Vijayawada. Tanikella Bharani wrote the dialogue. Ilaiyaraaja composed Siva's soundtrack and score, and S. Gopala Reddy was its cinematographer. Thota Tharani and Sattibabu were the film's art director and editor, respectively. It's principal photography began on 16 February 1989, and was completed in 55 working days. Except for three days of shooting in Madras (now Chennai), Siva was filmed in Andhra Pradesh.
Produced on a budget of ₹75 lakh, Siva was released on 5 October 1989 to critical acclaim, primarily for its technology and sound design. Although Venkat and Surendra expected the film to have average earnings, it was commercially successful and went on to become the highest-grossing film of Telugu film industry; Siva completed a 100-day run in 22 centres and a 175-day run in five centres. It was featured in the Indian Panorama mainstream section of the 13th IFFI, held on 19 January 1990. In addition to the Filmfare Award for Best Film - Telugu, Siva won three Nandi Awards: Best Director (Varma), Best First Film of a Director, and Best Dialogue Writer (Bharani). A documentary titled Exploring Shiva after 25 Years was released on the film's silver anniversary; it is the first documentary about a Telugu film.
Siva, which attained cult status, is considered Nagarjuna's breakthrough film. It is credited with the introduction of steadicam and new sound recording techniques in Telugu cinema, encouraging filmmakers to explore a variety of themes and make experimental films. For the April 2013 centennial of Indian cinema, News18 included Siva on its list of 100 greatest Indian films of all time. Its Tamil-dubbed version, Udhayam, was also successful. Varma remade the film twice in Hindi with the same title. The first, featuring Nagarjuna and Amala reprising their roles, performed well at the box office, but the second did not.

This interview is a dream come true for me. Back then I was curious and eager to know many things about Shiva which created a huge impact on the way I watched movies. Now when I hear these BTS stories straight from the horse's mouth the level of satisfaction is indescribable. To my understanding Nagarjuna is the main reason for this movie to have been made 'as is' out of director's true vision without getting influenced by anybody. When everybody left hope he was the only person who trusted Ramu and asked everybody to go by his vision. Imagine if Nagarjuna had not been associated with this movie what could have been the fate of Shiva. Maybe Shiva could never have seen the light forever or even if it was made later I dont think it would have created such a big impact because I think everything fell into place at the right time and at the right place with the right people. It was truly god sent. Till date I have never seen such a trend setting movie in my life. Even poster designs created such a big impact on the audience. To my knowledge everybody's thought process after watching the movie was 'how could anybody conceive anything like this' because the concept was so very novel and impactful. I was 16 years when I first watched Shiva in Devi 70mm. That was the first time I experienced goosebumps many times while watching and the goosebumps continued no matter how many times I watched it. Shiva is my most all-time favourite movie and extremely close to my heart.

This is one of the most interesting interviews ever .. the anchor was very knowledgeable about various facts of the film ..& he asked very technical questions too … except that he interfered while the guest was speaking a few times … he was good . RGV … my god !! How many film makers have the guts & audacity to say that they copied scenes from other films! He is brutally honest . His knowledge, narration, visual understanding, story telling is just above others .. Though he makes crap movies now he still is a brilliant filmmaker… As audience we hope to see that RGV again… If only he avoids posting irrelevant and cheap vídeos he stands tall above all others when it comes to the nuances of film making.. He will not make the kind of films u and me want in the near future. Obviously he can make another Rangeela or Satya. But I think he has no interest in such films In 1 Ramuism episode he said he is more a thinker than a filmmaker. He is just using this analytical talent to get new ideas and make them as movies -- like Killing Veerappan (life of him in jungle), Dangerous (love life of 2 lesbian girls), Not a Love Story (how the mind works of 2 people who have to cut a person into pieces to protect themselves), and so on So, he is making films on extremely low budget so to prevent or reduce losses, and making only those movies that interest him We may get better web series from him in future than movies He said in 1 interview that he didn't like Shiva when he rewatched recently, and infact many of his movies. He said Satya stood out the most

I don't agree that Shiva is NOT compatible presently. Because Fear of Goondas was beautifully depicted. Esp in Dark Backgrounds, Raghuvaran, Ram Reddy killing with knife is -- realistically shown. Nowadays ,killing with knife is shown as Baby Toy without effects . Ofcourse Shiva is a Slow Movie and Only works in Theatres .

Also he mentioned "JD character ki set ayyela unnav choostham neeku villain character". Vinod bala didn't complain that even though shooted on him not taken etc. RGV gariki time leka vishayam sagam sagam vini edo edo matladuthunnaaru.
