I picked up a 22’ 9.8 just a month ago that was a new hold over at a Trek store here in Colorado. I know it’s already 2/3 yrs old but for $3499 it was a bargain. Coming from mostly XC racing bikes, this thing wants to fly and it climbs incredibly.

I think it's perfect. A well tuned 120mm travel can tackle most trails; it's all about rider skill. And I love that storage compartment. I'm glad Knock Block is removable, and now a threaded BB. Well done guys.

Now you just need to make a 100mm, cross-country race version :) I have to admit, I'm a little sad to see this bike move out of the cross-country race category. The supercaliber is a nice bike, but kind of a weird one without the travel of most full suspension cross-country and without the feather-weight of a hardtail.

There are some other very progressive and good brands like specialized, rocky mountain, and cannondale. Don't forget specialized introduced the internal storage and made things like the epic evo and cannondale had the scalpel se before trek decided to make an aggressive xc bike.

2021 top fuel- the pinnacle? I have a 2021 top fuel, chosen because it hit the perfect blend of fast, lightish capable climbing bike plus highly capable on techy singletrack descents. For the rider who needs one bike to have fun riding, training and as an occasional xc bike plus BCBR/Alpine singletrack focused stage race, the 2021 was ideal. The droplock was amazing; super useful, XR3 tyres roll fast and grip well except in proper mud, Knockblock saved the frame and I found no issue except for in-car transportation. The changes to the fully trail style 2022 topfuel have unfortunately left a gap in treks line-up, which is a shame as a few friends are after a bike just like the 2021 version: fun for day to day single-track blasts (as is the 2022 I'm sure), usable for training, some "modern xc" races and "interesting terrain" stage races: all areas where the 2021 version has an edge. The Super Caliber is too limited in travel and a bit steep for being ideal outside being an excellent outright xc race day bike, so that's out, the 2022 Topfuel is too descent / trail orientated... A 120mm bike for occasional xc races/ regular warp speed trail-ride capable/ stage raceable bike is actually a big slice of the real MTB use world surely? Long live the 2021 Top fuel, especially mine! P.S. top marks to Trek and Bikes of Inverness for customer service & warranty service though, high praise!.... 2023? New Top Fast announced? 120mm travel, 67-67.5 degree HA, low stack height, Suntour tokyo olympics style electronic suspension or more of the excellent droplock lockout, XR3 2.4 tyres, 30mm internal rims, internal storage for marathon races spares kit, knockblock 2, erring shorter rather than max dropper posts lengths 100-130 max (I had to swap mine despite apparently being at the upper end of the size scale), perhaps dropper being integrated (ala BMC)?, downtube rockstrike protection, good routing at chainstay exit to work with both sram and shimano cable angle (like the 2021 version, less so 2022 or alloy fuel ex or procaliber), flipchip or headset cup geometry alteration, good cable routing for left or right brake lever... the perfect bike for non enduro style days and events. (just add a Remedy/ Slash for those)

I agree 100%! I have a 2020 Top Fuel and this seems slightly too trail oriented for me.

So, if you want to go fast, be lightweight and you like Trek bikes, your only choice is the Supercaliber. I am really confused about this. Basically, the fuel ex is the same bike now. This trend of mountain biking solely catering to those that only like to go downhill is short sited. Looks like my 2019 TF will be the last.

Well, big companies follow trends, not start them. Took a couple of years to get the geometry changes, AND I still can't afford one. I don't want the aluminum and can't afford the carbon with a decent groupset. I also prefer Fox over RoxShox. So still a no go. Looks good, but . . . until you can offer to buy direct (I am local) and I don't have to pay a middle man, I can build my own bikes, you still don't have a customer.

Makes no sense to make bike optimized more for down hill (slacker, more travel, heavier) when most of riding time is spent climbing. 27+ lbs is not lightweight!

I have been a client of Trek for a few seasons, in which I have bought several bicycles of the brand, until now everything had worked well, but in my last purchase a problem has arisen in which I think that Trek has not lived up to the great brand that it claims to be. My bicycle is a Trek Top Fuel 9.8 from 2020 with frame serial number WTU064CT0158P. I managed an incident that was not accepted by the brand, without agreeing with the answer, and not to enter into legal disputes, I accepted the option of substituting said frame for a new one, through the Trek Carbon Care option, this was the end of November, the first week of January was given, the frame arrived on 02/14. Now comes the surprise, the frame comes unpainted, raw (with the Trek stickers but without the protective layer of lacquer) the error is communicated to the brand and the answer is that there has been an error and that it will take a few weeks plus delivery of the painting. I make my problem known so that users understand that behind all the marketing that TREK sells, its after-sales service and its customer protection, sometimes it is not up to par, because it cannot be understood, that from the Trek it is not look for alternatives to problems of this type
