I had the opportunity to work on STTNG for two seasons. During that time I had the opportunity to meet Ricardo Montalban and I can tell you that the pecs were definately real. He had a very strict and strong workout every day, despite being in horrible chronic pain from a spinal injury from an earlier film. One thing I always say when ever anyone asks. He was the lovliest man I have ever met, and on the day he passed, the world lost a living saint.

Nope. The show's producers (Bob Justman and Herb Solow) said in the book Inside Star Trek: The Real Story that the issue was they knew this was Roddenberry's girlfriend, despite the fact Roddenberry was married at the time to someone else. They thought that was unethical, so they said she could not be on it. Period. So Roddenberry put her in a blonde wig. They knew he did it, but just shrugged because she was wasn't the lead any more, just a recurring performer not in every episode.

I think the whole kiss thing is more focused on the white man kissing a black woman, though the others would actually take it as being interracial I think it’s because of the whole race problem in America being predominantly based on African Americans and because of that the kiss is more impactful between Kirk and Uhura. Hadn’t heard the Geordi’s family thing.

Ricardo Montalban had been a major Mexican, and American "Artista" (Actor) since the 1940's. He was a personal friend to William Shatner. He was always well-built due to his dramatic action/acting roles, however none had ever called for him to be bare-chested as much as his W.o.K. character, Khan Noonian Singh. He did an Entertainment Tonight interview that aired in the early 80's where he was asked "point blank" if his chest in that movie was prosthetic. He responded heartily, but humbly that he had to do "quite a lot of push-up's to get into that kind of shape". Of course he then reported back to work at "Fantasy Island" as the well mannered & fully dressed Mr. Roark, and then, on to a prime-time soap, "Falcon Crest". Hats off, and Muchos "Saludos" to Don Ricardo Montalban.

Garak is my all time favourite TV character...I think Andrew Robinson was brilliant. Casey Biggs' Damar may be the most underrated and underappreciated character on the show. Damar had a great redemption story arc, and died a hero, and yet he's never mentioned when people talk about the show. Dukat started out as a great villain, but that whole storyline with Kai Wynn, when he was pretending to be a Bajoran, was just stupid.

@@Terri_MacKay Garak and Dukat were both endlessly fascinating characters to me and they were brought to life INCREDIBLY well by two very talented people. I could talk about them all dang day, really. I just personally preferred Damar's arc. Garak got so much depth, but was still basically Garak, his personality didn't change. Dukat developed and changed, ultimately, into a worse person. (Waltz should have been his last appearance really.) But Damar came *so close* to redemption for himself and his people.

Impossible now, I know, but what right thinking entity in the quadrant wouldn't want to see this? Also, the emotional Spock we're currently seeing in SNW makes perfect sense. We know what happened to him to trigger this state, but can only guess what happens between where we are now to Spock being with Kirk to make his Vulcan side take over. The whole time I;ve been wondering why they've made this change, when it was actually written into cannon the whole time.

Well, Gene Roddenberry was an incredibly prolific philanderer and "man's man", very macho, a cop, pilot, etc. He was probably partly compensating for his strong artistic impulses which, in American culture, have often been associated with homosexuality. Sad for him, but that's the way it was.

Some people actually cannot separate actors from their characters (i.e. real vs. fiction). Many actors have gotten hate dumped on them as well as death threats for something their fictional character did in a production.

Perhaps they should have rephrased the kiss legend. Maybe it was the first Black/white interracial kiss on American primetime TV. No way was it the first broadcast interracial kiss period. Besides the examples you mentioned, I have a very strong suspicion 😉 that James Bond also beat Captain Kirk to the punch.

I did read an apocryphal story that, way back when, Gene Roddenberry was at a convention and read a fan's Spock/Kirk smutfic (back in the days before they realised what a legal mess that could be). It enraged him, not because of the gay, but because it mentioned Spock undoing Kirk's fly. You could be gay in the utopian future of Star Trek just fine, but clothing fastenings were not welcome.

Um, when they talk about "interracial kiss", pretty much they literally mean white person and black person kissing. Pretty sure no one cared if white and Asians kissed by the time of Star Trek. And Desi Arnaz is a white man, a descendant of Europe. If Majel was the problem, and not having a woman in a position of authority, why didn't they find another woman to be Kirk's first officer. After all, it really is dumb that the captain and first officer were always leaving on the away team. Sure Kirk wants his science officer there, and that's Spock.

You've got to be young, and have been confused by this 1984 nonsense going on... Just because you're from Europe did not mean you're white... Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Greek, were not and in my book still are not white... and before you try to tear me apart for that statement it is what it is and I really don't care that they're not white but people keep redefining things until they no longer have meaning... by the way interracial means interracial... Not sure how else to say that

I really don't think we can talk about Maizlish messing about with Star Trek and having responsibility for Star Trek's failure for gay representation without talking about Rick Berman's homophobia and his huge blame for that as well. After all, Maizlish did die in 1994 and Star Trek and Rick Berman could have easily done more gay representation, especially with ENT.
