this is a man who invaded normandy, and once flew under a bridge to prove it could be done in that particular airframe. but the greatest thing he did was talk someone out of her suicidal depression. the world needs more of him.

That was sweet of him! I wonder what he'd think of Chris playing his role in "Star Trek Continues"? I know what I think. Chris outdoes Simon Pegg in the JJ Abrams films since they cancelled "STC"!

Just goes to show how important a cultural force can be. Some people think it's sad for a person to have that kind of dedication to a television show, or a collection of movies or whatever, but it's a very noteworthy thing. What is it about Trek and other cultural forces that causes people to latch on to it? Just going by this story, and by the probability of there being countless others just like it, Trek is more than a television show, it's something that speaks to people on a personal level that it makes them feel good just by being a part of it. Regardless of how you feel about Trek, as it's far from everyone's cup of tea, this shows that it is a positive force in the world, and quite literally is capable of saving lives.

+Patrick Harris Well to be honest the same people that say those things, have the same level of dedication towards sports team for example. And in their tiny brain their dedication is the only one that is justified somehow, everything else is stupid.....If someone says something like that, while he is filling his room with sports related souvenirs - I automatically assume they are mentally challenged.....

@patrick harris , all i know is that as a star trek fan and ever other star trek fan i know of is a good decent person.......so what ever it maybe, star trek has a positive effect on people. so yes i agree with you, im sure it has saved lives and improved lives and it will continue to do so. it is more than an average tv show....its an idea. thats what i always loved about it

James Doohan was such a kind person. So many people would have just ignored it or not read it in the first place - instead he went out of his way to make sure she was okay.

So true. Honestly, Shatner would have ignored it. It's sad that we lost the best Star Trek actors -- Deforest Kelly, James Doohan, and Leonard Nimoy -- first.

I'm glad he was able to help that girl. R.I.P Scotty! This story makes me think about this morning when I was met this girl in my drawing class, and she said she's had a history of depression and anxiety. Thankfully she said me talking to her was at least something that made her feel better, even though it wasn't exactly what she needed. I'm now very interested in keeping in contact with her so I can help her though any problems she goes through, while trying to make her feel happier and special.

Words can't describe how I feel for this man. The world needs to be filled with people like him. Between D-Day, Star Trek, and this, he will be loved forever. More people need to know about him. This story is what the song On The Turning Away says to do "Just a world that we all must Share It's not enough just to stand and stare Is it only a dream that there'll Be No more turning away?" is the last stanza. I want to live by this song and be like James Doohan.

That is amazing! I heard of Deforest Klly doing something similar, I'll never forget them not only for their professional work but for the camaraderie they brought me as a child, only like a family for me seeing them in NYC at the Hilton around the mid 70's and coming from some real crappy family situation myself as a pre teen. I saw James on stage as I went alone to that early convention and just really loved that guy, he was a big emotional comfort 4 me. Thanks for this post! Godspeed James!

I think James was a hero just for trying to give her a chance to go on.. I'm glad it turned out for the best, and I think it shows how he moved he was to made a difference. He saved a life. On D-DAY, and in WWII he fought for many more. To be frank, further to his credit, I think James Doohan, Scotty, was responsible for something like half of the electrical engineers in the last quarter of 20th century. He and Nimoy, Spock, probably made the generations of science we enjoy now. Man's a hero; a legend. Full respect.
