Some people like the straps on trekking poles, some don't. It's personal preference. In this video I'll show you how to take your straps off without cutting them.

I'm old(er) now. When I accidentally drop a pole, I use the other pole tip to hook into the fallen pole's strap to pick it up. Thanks for the video. You have great stuff

I took mine off years ago. Hiking in the Catskills in the winter, I tripped with my snow shoes on. Damn near broke my wrist because it was strapped to my trekking pool. No more. I am a strapless Hiking pole hiker.

Thanks, very clear and complete instructions. I was easily able to replace a broken strap on my Leki Makalu Lite Cor-Tec Trekking Pole. I did not have to remove the top piece. I just removed the lower pin (2 pieces: pin and collar). But I was careful to align the strap by putting the screw in from the bottom-side of the strap relative to the other end of the strap.

Intriguing process. Great step by step instructional video! : ) That's the bread and butter here, regardless of whether to hike or not with strap loops. And these DIY productions of yours are a major reason why I have you in my Recommended Channels list. : ) I can't thank you enough!

I. This past summer, I was attempting to walk around and over some down trees and such. My pole got wedged in an animal hole was hidden from my view by the tree limb. I had been using straps at the time and my pole flexed, while wedged between the trees and in the hole, causing me to be unable release my grip and sent me tumbling into a tree headfirst. So I now go strap less!

My straps keep my hands from slipping off the poles. I'll spin my hand around when going down hill and the straps help with that grip too.

I really like your videos. Much better than others I have seen. I thought I was the only person who didn't use the straps. I've done Mt. Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp and Inca Trail all without using the straps (but I would never attempt an AT through hike). Another subject: Why use "Smart" water bottles? Wouldn't others work as well? Smart water is expensive !

I use them for durability and the sports caps. Lifewater too. I reuse the bottles for about a year then get new ones once they get nasty

Great Vid. I fell one time while strapped in to the poles.Not good. Haven't used the straps ever since. Hey....that's a really cool mini Katahdin sign. Where did you get that? Enjoy your videos!! AT 2019 thru-hiker from NWPA

Same happened to me, twisted my wrist up pretty good. I'm also constantly pulling out a camera so straps are definitively more of a hinderance for me.

The straps do kinda lock your hands, but that's the best part! You don't need a strong grip to hold the poles, which is much more comfortable

if your use of poles is more passive i agree. i use mine aggressively going uphill and i prefer no straps

Such a great video! Im personally a fan of straps. Too many years as a musician has left me with hands that dont quite have the grip endurance I'd like. There were a couple times I definitely let the straps do the work. However, knowing how to remove the straps is great, Im thinking if I wanted to give them a good wash or play around with how they fit on my hand. right now I twist them, so im wondering if being able to twist them before I put my hands in them would enable me to have flat straps against my hand, if that makes sense. Thanks! I know these arent hiking videos, but getting into the minutiae of gear builds knowledge and confidence and really helps a hiker make informed choices on gear, rather than just buying something because Frozen uses it. Not that that's a bad thing, of course. ;) -Dandelion

I think you triggered some folks by removing the straps. Some folks just get caught up in the 'correct' way of doing things. Use straps don't use straps, hike the way you want hike! Some of your viewers missed that part of the video. 🙃

Yea got some minor hate on this video. But people seem afraid to try new things if it doesn't go with the crowd. Just my personal preference. A few years ago I fell hard on my wrist going up and the strap made things worse because or got tangled up on some jagged rocks.

Not the specific topic but, have a question. Why everybody uses the carbide tips instead of the rubber ones on the trekking poles? Wouldn't the rubber ones prevent poles slipping on rocks?
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Rubber ones wear out in about 100 miles. They are typically used for road walking.

I won't trust factory trekking pole straps for a thru-hike. They fall apart after being sweaty, wet and wearing. I put a couple of the paracord bracelets that I tie together and attach them to the pole with some paracord. Gives me a sturdy strap that won't break, and extra emergency cord for no extra weight.

Rarely do I grip the trekking poles tightly. Only on stream crossings or places I am relying on them for extra footing. Half the time I'm only using one pole. I enjoy not using the straps.

@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Well I only had knee issues on the AT and that's because I hiked the AT in 2019. I don't really think not having straps on my poles had anything to do with it. There are many people that don't use trekking poles at all.
