I did this trek 6 years ago when I was 60.. never hiked or trekked anywhere in my life. But I do have determination.. no idea what to expect but had a great time and met some wonderful people. I love watching these video. Brings back great memories.

awesome video! I got back home from my EBC trek a week ago and it was great to re see some of the sights. In October there was nobody staying at base camp so it was interesting seeing base camp with tents and people staying there. When I went it was just myself and a guide. maybe one day I'll redo it with a larger group. it looks like it could be a lot of fun. Did you go up to Kalapathar peak? I found that part of my trek even more impressive then base camp. It was my favorite part.
@JamesBTravel11 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching - I really enjoyed doing it with a group, but can also see the benefits of doing it solo too! Around half our group did Kalapathar, but I was really struggling with altitude sickness (I couldn't eat for 2 days and woke up on the morning of Kalapathar not being able to see!). Amy and Clare did it though and said it was incredible, so I was very jealous!

I did it long ago and if I could offer some advice - if you have time walk in from Jiri. You will acclimatize better .Up and down three mountains then left and follow the Khumbu Valley. I only had a pack and easy to do alone and stay each night in guest houses along the way.namaste.
@karipintakivi915310 ай бұрын
17:58 drinking a lot of water does not help with acclimatisation at all, it is a gross misunderstanding of the process. Drink when thirsty, that is all there is to it (more than usual though for several reasons).

There is a much more impressive high trail on the opposite side of the valley from Tengboche offering vastly better views than the standard route. Does not make much sense to hike the same trail twice when there is a better and more adventurous alternative available via Mong La - Phortse - Pangpoche which can be hiked in the same amount of time.

I finished my trek 2 weeks ago and we experienced some shortage of rooms. sometimes we would have to go further to the next town to get a room. At Gorakshep it was very busy. no empty rooms left and I had to share a room with someone else. At Lobuche i nearly had to sleep in the teahouse owners room with all his stuff in the room but then latter on in the afternoon a room became free for me. On the day we were heading to Lukla we passed 1000s of people. the airport had been closed for a week so lots of people flew in that day with shorter schedules with plans to skip some acclimatization days. I've no idea where all those people were going to stay. they might have had to do 3 people per room and sleeping in the lunch rooms or something.
@JamesBTravel Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the extra info, it sounds like we went at a much less busy time of year! Sounds like booking with a tour company that pre-books accommodation for you is the way to go

Hi, thanks for the video. I like your story telling. It's calm and peaceful, but also catchy. I'm planning the EBC trekking, may I ask two questions? Do they have electricity for charging cameras / phones in every tea house? and what is the lowest temperature you experience over there? Thank you.
@JamesBTravel8 ай бұрын
They have electricity in all the tea houses we stayed in, but they start charging for use higher up the mountain. I don’t remember what the lowest outdoor temperate was, possibly around -5 to -10 degrees at night, but it was warm enough inside the tea houses (I was warm inside a sleeping bag), but it can get lower than that.

@JamesBTravel11 ай бұрын
As a rough estimate (excluding flights), it was around £1,000 per person for the guide, accommodation and transfers (all via G Adventures), an additional £500 for expenses in the mountains (food, drinks, hot showers, internet), plus around £100-150 for tipping guides and porters.

@JamesBTravel Жыл бұрын
We saw a few people trekking without a guide (I think there’s been a proposal to ban it due to safety, but not sure the status of that), but it’s definitely advisable to go with a guide. If you get altitude sickness - which many/most do - it’s good to have a guide, they book your tearooms ahead so you don’t risk getting stranded, plus it’s an important source of income for the Sherpa people - both guides and porters - it’s important to support this local economy.
