What an unusual set-up, the lineside huts on the river bridge. Seems like a strange way to do it; maybe saved buying a tiny bit of land for the huts but made the bridge somewhat more complicated.👍😁 Lovely morning for a walk too.👌

Did this walk back in 2021 and then again today (17/11/2023). What a difference...and not in a good way! Had to abandon it because it's too overgrown and almost impassible in places. There are now many large sections of very thorny brambles which are just too difficult to get through. I might try it again in the depths of winter when hopefully a lot of it will have died back. Not holding out much hope though because even if some of it dies back it's still accumulating year on year. I suspect in a few more years this former line will be almost invisible let alone walkable...very sad. On a positive note...you can park up at Bevercotes colliery and walk around what's left of the site which is well worth doing. The place is quite eerie and has an apocalyptic feel to it.

Great video Ant, there really is nothing left of the Bevercoates site, back in the late seventies I was exploring Mickleover tunnel and when I was at the top I tripped and slid at high speed down the right hand side drainage gully and almost went head first into a plate layers hut which used to stand at the mouth of the western portal :) 😃 ahhhhh the good old days .

Good that you got West Burton & Cottam Power Stations into the initial drone shots, remind everyone why we needed collieries in the first place. Looks like a fairly easy walk, undergrowth was under control. I have never seen a tunnel where the walls slope like that, some parts of the tunnel look like they are local sandstone without any lining.

The 45 tonnes is likely the maximum design weight for the bridge. The standard for road bridges (I should I say bridges carrying roads) is to be able to carry a vehicle weighing a maximum of 44 tonnes. Since the heaviest standard load a vehicle can be is 44 tonnes.

I think I’ve said this before but this particular route is still owned by Network Rail. When they decide to sell it it’ll be valued and go to an estate agent who will market it (as they did for the Welbeck pit line recently). A local authority could buy it and convert it if they could afford to. We looked at the Welbeck one (I work for a district council) but the money just wasn’t there to do it. Plus it doesn’t go anywhere that anyone would want to cycle!

Of the two pits you featured all that remains is a car park and a vast empty space. I'd like them to preserve more, although I appreciate there isn't much that can be done with the remains.

I feel things are getting a little too repetitive here. No, not the videos of course but the words that come to mind whenever I watch Ant’s latest trek. Words like “interesting”, “informative”, “entertaining”, “enjoyable”, “impressive tunnel photography” (hmm, that’s three words), “superb drone footage”, “brilliant music choices” and all-round “high production values”. For info, planning permission was granted around 10 years ago to redevelop the Bevercotes colliery site as Vertical Park, a warehouse distribution centre. Some pics and brochure at www.gladman.co.uk/industrial-space-bevercotes.php. Oh, and the title of this video is incorrect. It should of course be “walk, explore & fall” :-)
