I already had most of what you said in my head but the bit about the original security officer was perfect. I never would have thought of that. I'm still not a fan of the shows early direction but at least there does seem to be a good reason for it. I think Lorca being from the mirror universe is all but confirmed.

They even mention how each captain has its own bodyguard.

Anyone else wonder why there is technology to measure a "Quantum Signature" if the number has never, EVER, changed in the entire history of history? It would be like if we had something constantly monitoring the mass of a proton or the charge of an electron. Captain, according to my sensors the speed of light in a vacuum just changed!

Neat theory. I wonder if Lorca was over in the Prime Universe so long that he identifies it as his home universe now. His need to defeat the Klingons seemed very, very real. Lorca easily seemed like the most prepared captain to deal with the Mirror Universe in so far.

Well the way I see it, the best possible fate for the crew of _Discovery_ is that the method she uses to try to get him throws her around 100 years or so into the future... or at least far enough into the future that the knowledge she has is worthless (i.e. cloak frequency, Terran Empire, fate of _Defiant_ , etc.) It would also neatly fill in all of the possible continuity issues (1), like why Michael has never been mentioned before, why the Spore Drive was never pursued and/or was reworked into the Transwarp project (still hope that theory pans out), etc. Plus it would make sense if going back to the original universe sent them forward in time. Original to Mirror via Interphase Space sent the _Defiant_ back 100+ years. As for ISS _Discovery_ and her fate, well Saru did indicate that everything had shifted position relative to where they were supposed to be; it's possible that ISS _Discovery_ jumped into something. Like a star, planet, or asteroid. It's also possible that she was, for lack of a better term, over written. When USS _Discovery_ jumped in they may have been occupying the same space and ISS _Discovery_ may have been reduced to component atoms. Also, the Mirror Lorca theory also answers the question of why Tilly was on the ship to begin with. After all, _Discovery_ needs her Captain Killy. (1)After all, can't use the Temporal Cold War resolution excuse in order to explain these like you can with the ENT appearance of cloaking tech and subsequent disappearance of said tech for over 100 years.

I've seen every episode of Enterprise multiple times, but I'll be goddamned if I can recall a time when they, or Daniels, actually cloaked the ship. Daniels gave Archer the specs for a scanner that would allow him to break the Suliban cloak, but I don't recall them cloaking themselves.

NX-01 never cloaked, but the Romulans had ships that could cloak ships and had cloaked mines while the Sultan could cloak their one-man cell ships. I theorized that those cloaks were removed from the timeline when the Temporal Cold War ended before it could begin and the timeline rest. Which would explain why they were in ENT, but Kirk and company was shocked by cloaking tech in the 23rd century. DSC partially supports that theory since Starfleet was shocked by Klingon cloaking tech in _Vulcan Hello_ and _Battle of the Binary Stars_ Mind you, that creates a different discontinuity, but that could be explained by the existence of the tech being classified and the Klingons possibly losing the tech during the war. Also that the errors we see in various series are aftershocks of the Temporal Cold War and the timeline correcting itself.

The only thing that I don't think happened is any tech sharing from the Defiant - maybe some minor tech - but any vital systems info would've been hoarded by the emperor/empress to keep the tactical advantage over other ships in the era and other ambitious capt's within the Empire - and that would keep the Terran Empire tech equivalent to the Federation - but other than that minor quibble I drank your Kool-aid!!

Ok, scrolled down a bit to see if there was any conversation about this: Discovery has to return to the Prime universe with plans to Defiant (the old one), or the ship itself, to close a paradox/time loop. When they take specs on Defiant home, it will be the most advanced ship in THAT universe, so Star Fleet will quickly begin making Constitution Class vessels as seen in TOS. This is where it gets tricky. In order to complete the time loop, the Defiant HAS to be captured by the Tholians and sent back in time to the Terran Empire to ensure that the tech will make it to TOS era. This is why time travel gives you headaches.

Let's not forget there's another entry point for the two universes - 'The City on the Edge of Forever'. Two roads diverged there in '30s America with both registering on Spock's tricorder. Even though things got straightened out melodramatically, two universes may exist without either posing the threat of cancelling out the other. "Waves and waves of time displacement", emanating from the time portal, enough to set up scenarios who knows where.

By this time, wouldn't an aggressive civilization like the Terran Empire have scuttled the century old Defiant, reverse engineered it's advanced technology and have created a super fleet at this point in the future? episode 11 contains another clue that lorca may be from the mirror universe: the octopus-like dish that mirror saru serves to prime burnham (7:41) is exactly the same dish that lorca was eating in episode 4 (14:59) when cornwell calls :o i only noticed this because i dislike eating octopus so it got my attention both times :P

It explains why the Terran Resistance jumped on the Defiant-class corvette design in the DS9 period. The name 'Defiant' must be a near-totemic name for Terrans - The ship that saved the Empire and made it the behemoth that stood unchallenged for over 120 years until it was undermined from within by a soft-headed Vulcan/Human hybrid with delusions that 'peace' with the other races of the galaxy was possible. So, it wasn't just the Defiant's undoubted unchallenged power as a combat starship that made the Resistance successful. It was the fact of the name: Terrans would flock to any banner carried by the commander of a Starship Defiant. It is quite possible that Captain O'Brien may be the first Emperor of the refounded Empire for no other reason that the power of being the captain of the USS Defiant.

On After Trek following this episode Aaron Harbets mentioned early on in development they were going to head to the MU in the fourth episode. So this could be the result of further developing Lorca, and Landry around that concept.

We know the Discovery exists in TOS, but we also know the Spore Drive did not win the 3 Year War. Chances are that the TOS Discovery is a Constitution class named after the lost Discovery, which was presumed lost after a bad jump. In the meantime, the Discovery jumps into the future and is greeted by Section 31. Continuity is preserved.

I would say the splitting of the mirror universe from the prime universe began much earlier then the first contact, as seen in the intro of the mirrorverse episodes of "Enterprise". I would guess around the beginning of the 20th century, maybe world war 2.

The Defiant makes things messy. The computer scan of Defiant in this episode shows the Terran Empire has made modifications to the Defiant, which does make sense given the great deal of time that had passed between ENT In a Mirror Darkly and now. But...the Defiant exists in a time loop. Something happens to cause the crew to all die and then it to interphase with the mirror universe and time skip, where it gets stolen by the Tholians who dump it's dead crew. But then, how do you account that the Defiant must time travel back to TOS time (as a STOCK ship without modifications) and interphase back with the prime universe WITH IT'S STARFLEET CREW ONBOARD AND DEAD? I ask this because let's say for example, through the course of events Discovery destroys the Defiant or it otherwise remains in the mirror universe. Then how is it in the prime universe for the Enterprise to encounter in TOS The Tholian Web? The Defiant going to the mirror universe in ENT was a cool idea, but it creates a web of problems to be solved.

I maintain that std is mostly a straightforward story with foreshadowing that leaves the audience unsuprised. And while the show maintains fairly easily dechiphered "suprises." The big theme seems to be the catch phrase of quantum leap. Show writers have often commented on how a lot of this show is basixally explinations and homages to past star trek shows, specifically tos, ds9 and enterprise. I put forth that the quantum leap theme of Lorca is that not only is he from another universe, but that he is from the future. Not only thath, but that he is not from the mirror universe originally, but another future alternative trying to quantum leap home.

There's one problem with the theory that Lorca has been determinedly been trying to get back to the Mirror Universe. Given what we've seen happen to him so far, he is taking a serious risk in trying to get back home just to kill the Emperor/Empress. He is currently being tortured in the pain booth on board Shenzhu, which is cannot be a pleasant experience, while depending upon Burnham to get the information they need to get back home (without using the Spore Drive). Moreover, if indeed there was a Prime Universe Lorca, one has to assume that Mirror Universe Lorca killed him in order to take his place. That would indicate he has a cold, calculating and decidedly ruthless personality (which is consistent with what we see). Yet given the chance to start fresh in a new universe and get away from the insanity of his universe, why not simply live out his life in the Prime Universe?

I think the thing about Mary Sue's that aggravates people isnt that they are 'uncommonly good' at things. Its that they are used as a placeholder or 'keymaster' to progress the story without an interesting reason. Come up against a insurmountable opponent? Mary sue is there. Come up against an intellectually impossible feat? mary sue is there. Its not the 'skill' thats wrong, its the fact that we like to see people more realistic with their expertise and charm get involved. Scotty for engineering, bones for medical and so on. We wouldnt want scotty, bones and kirk rolled into one, that would make for a shitty story. Thats what burnham tries to do. Its all the more annoying that there are many better characters on the ship we would like to see in her position, but she is put forward every time, because shes the mary sue.

You should have included the "Discovery Universe" at 8:24, since there is no way it could be related to the TOS/TNG Prime Universe. Discovery is great sci-fi, but it is not Prime Universe Star Trek.

Many people are surmising that the computers on Discovery are continually checking quantum signatures as a background function. That explains how they would think to even check something like that when they entered the mirror universe. The computer would say "hey... this has changed..." Being if that is what it is, wouldn't Lorca set off that kind of notification were he a doppelgänger?

So as a non viewer, was discovery in mirror mirror from episode 1? I get the impression this is a midseason development? Also, I think the mirror universe is axiomatically evil. Good doesn't win in the end. It is a subtle thing but fundamentally to the universe altruism is slightly less rewarding .

this is leading to a faceoff with the tholians, which is actually interesting. about the most interesting question in the whole star trek multiverse. what happened to the tholians. they are a much larger threat than any threat that the federation ever faced including the borg and the q who were never shown to be a threat, the q might want to remove humanity but they make it clear that they would remove humanity as a whole before humanity even existed, the tholians are the ultimate question, what do they want.

i think the tholians are an oddity that could use exploration. keep in mind that while the q could eliminate the borg at any moment the q don't want anything to do with them either ("don't antagonize the borg"), the tholians are clearly a threat, one we really haven't ever seen. and there was a war with the tholians in the timeline around this time in the timeline, at least close enough that they might try to co-opt it for this series.
