I get it’s springtime and we’re all caring for (hopefully) growing Hoyas, but I’m going to believe this trellising video is dedicated to me and my floppy Hoya.

I barely dabble in Hoyas and mainly watch your videos for your sparkling personality… however! Lately you, and another KZbinr, soberplantguy, have been inspiring me to keep my Hoya collection alive. Thank you. You’re an amazing person and I feel a connection to you (which is really hard to do on social media!)…. 😊

Another great topic for a video, great call Miro! My first Hoya grew slow and steady, and then one day was a monster, and I had no idea how to trellis it. It spent part of one summer outside and really thrived, then it just died, probably pests or rootbound. So I got scared off from Hoyas for a while. now I’ve been adding to my collection quite a bit. To avoid the fear of suddenly having huge unruly plants I find your video/suggestions & experiences of great value!😉💚🪴

I think maybe it’s the twining that needs to go counter clockwise. I have noticed that when my hoya twine around each other they do go counter clockwise. Where as when wrapping it around a tower trellis it might not matter.

Agreed. My future self is on her own. Now is all that matters. 😂

I just re-trellised my Hoya elliptica as its original trellis was undersized and rotted (bamboo). What a chore. And, yes, it doesn't look very natural right now. I'm hoping it will sort itself out over time.
@BasiePlants6 ай бұрын
Ah, it happens all the time xD It needs to be done, but with some plants I swear they look worse after. But in most cases they fix themselves and it looks as good if not better than before! :)

I do have several videos on trellising - tower/ rabbit fence trellises, the twisted aluminum wire trellises (craft wire that looks like bronze) and then I also use regular bamboo hoops :)

I really enjoyed this video, you’re very relatable and funny! I too look at which way my Hoya is growing and follow its lead. You can’t force it to do what you want, the plant wins….just go with it.

Timely video! I struggle with trellising my Hoyas or maybe what I should be doing!
@sheilacasper20306 ай бұрын
Hey Miro. Very timely video. I generally use the bamboo hoops. Since the obovada and kerri vines are so long I go horizontally up the bamboo hoop. I try to keep the vines going up and this way works better for me. I also have a pubicalyx and an australis in a macramé hanger and i attach the vines so they go up the hanger. This works, the hoyas seem happy, they can hang and it is beautiful.

I'm glad you addressed the counterclockwise vs. clockwise. I confuse myself when trellising 😅 I heard a seller say that it should be counterclockwise and passed that on... thanks for taking the pressure off. 😅

I was leaning toward the idea of switching to bamboo u-hoops, so this clinches it for me. I'm going to do it. I initially bought metal circle hoops that have sort of a branch detail in the center of them, but found out the hard way (a couple of times) that they have drawbacks. I put my Fungii on one and now she's wrapped around it about a million times. I need to re-trellis her, but I wove her through the branch detail trying to make it pretty, so will either have to lose leaves or find a way to cut her out. Not super thrilled with either option. I also tried to wrap my H. Australis Tenuipes around one and snapped the vine which splattered sap onto my window. It felt like a CSI unit should be called in to investigate my brutality. haha I think the hoops will cause less destruction and make it easier for me to re-trellis when I need to.

I really enjoyed watching this! I love looking at those big-leaved sexy hoyas. And also watching you problem-solve trellising was helpful for me. it is one of those things that can be SO frustrating but also SO rewarding when you finally find hte trellis that works.
@Plantlifewithnina6 ай бұрын
Hello Mero! I use dark green plastic trellises but love the acrylic hoops just a little costly. The metal design trellises I use but both the bamboo and the metal rot off in pon pots. The bamboo looks so natural. 🪴I also make some trellises with galvanized wire.

Thank you for all the great information. I would love to know which Hoyas you have had the best success trellising. It appears that the bigger leaf Hoyas seem to need it more and ones with thick stems.

They are made by a company called Santino :) I got them locally from a guy who imports them, but I was told they are also available on European Amazon, though I don't know that for sure as we don't have Amazon here.
