Firearms instructor here. "What the heck is she doing?" That blue machine is a brass tumbler. It cleans off brass for reloading it. Burt & Heather are what is called handloaders. They save their brass and load bullets and powder into them. It's a very common practice in rural America, especially among hunters with calibers where it would otherwise be substantially more expensive to buy en masse as opposed to common calibers like 5.56 or 9mm. Also, because they are preppers, Burt & Heather assumed in a societal collapse they would have to make their own ammo anyway because they couldn't buy more from a store.

That noisy device Reba dumped the shells in is a brass polisher. You use that to clean and polish used shells before reloading them (installing new primers, filling them with gunpowder, and pressing in a new bullet). It’s recycling for gun owners. And it would have been noisy - but less so - if she had fastened down the lid with the included wing nut.

@@BedsitBob I feel ya. It's not mentioned in the movie, but it's reasonable to assume that while they were patroling, they decided to reload rounds as soon as they got back, in preparation for what they thought was coming. It feels out of place because it was one of the only things that made noise, that hadn't been foreshadowed. The jackhammer, the basketball, the fridge, and the pogo were all already introduced prior to the monsters showing up. But not the brass cleaner.

@@BedsitBob Burt owns dozens and dozens of firearms. Each firearm needs to be test fired and sighted in. Sighting in a magnified optic takes at least 20 rounds worth of ammo per rifle and optic combo. Then there's testing which bullet weight works best each barrel and its particular rifling twist rate. On top of that, you need to practice. Shooting is a perishable skill, like most learned skills. You need to practice, practice, practice. The main (1-4) Critters movies are great for sci-fi/horror/comedy. Much like Tremors, the Critters franchise was creates to also be fun "movie night" type movies, rather than too seriously horror or monster movie stuff. People sometimes think that Critters is a "Gremlins clone", but it's an accident of convergent thought, as Critters was into production prior to Gremlins, but Gremlins was released before Critters. If Critters had been released first, people might be saying that Gremlins was a "Critters clone". But the production teams are adamant that neither knew about the other's product until the movies were released.

The chemistry between Val and Earl is so great; I so wish Kevin Bacon had come back for a sequel. Talking of good stunts, look at how Burt's stunt double lands when he falls out of the tractor's bucket. I haven't found any mention of filming injuries, but it sure looks like he broke both his ankles. I think the constant mentions of the graboids' odor was for a planned angle that - for whatever reason - the filmmakers decided to abandon; like the characters being able to detect their presence from the smell. If you're looking for monster movies, I suggest 'The Prophecy' (1979), not to be confused with the Satanist movie of the same name.

I could not help but laugh at how they talked to one another. The little girl, Mindy, was played by Arianna Richards, who would go on to play Lex in Jurassic Park three years after Tremors. One thing I loved about this movie was how much it reminded me of the Big Bug movies from the 1950's. The best of the bunch was 1954's THEM!, about giant ants. I know you guys like the cheesy 80's action movies. You should watch Fred Ward in Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins

This was a great movie. Shame there were no sequels.

Oh, the 1980s remake of "The Blob" was stellar! Those visual effects just blew me away (well, except some of the green-screen stuff).

I was so obsessed with this movie as a kid. I watched it every time it came on the Sci-fi channel. Finally just recorded it on VHS. 😂 The sequels are a lot of fun too. At least the first few anyway.

Great and fun reaction, Maplenuts! This film is still one of my favorite monster movies! It's definitely up there with the classic, "THEM!", from the 1950s monster genre. And a thriller movie Chandra would enjoy, 1978s "MAGIC", not about puppets but a ventriloquist dummy! Always enjoy your reactions and look forward to your next flick. 🎥🍿👍

25:33...to answer your question....thats a brass tumbler sand system....so she has put all of her spent ammunition into the sand and the tumbler shakes and rotates to clean the brass casings inside and out so the casings can be reused if they make their own ammo.

This reaction and her predictions makes me think Chandra is a survival genius.

29:30 the reason they eat the truck is because the car alarm goes off. The graboid was circling the house trying to find them (like the others) and went under the truck, setting off the car alarm.

Until recently, I didn't even know the movie's original title being "Tremors". For decades I knew it only by its German title "Im Land der Raketenwürmer", which translates to "In the Land of the Rocket Worms". 😁

Tremors 2 and 3 are really good too, and expand our understanding of these creatures as well.

The gigantic double-barrel Burt Gummer picks up in his basement is actually a 4-bore rifle--what most people would call an elephant gun. Needless to say, a cartridge that size has a LOT of power. Imagine a brick travelling at about 1,600 feet per second, and you'll be in the right neighborhood. Edit: I wrote this comment a little while before Heather explicitly mentioned that it was an elephant gun. I forgot that part was in there.

Apart from all the things that make this movie awesome (cast, script, directing, effects, etc.) this movie is also fairly unique in the monster/horror genre in that most of the action takes place outdoors in broad daylight. That's something you don't see all that often.

I’m so glad you guys liked this movie! It’s so fun and pretty unique in general. I think you two should DEFINITELY get into the sequels! The next two especially, the fourth one is decent for what it is, and after that it’s kind of up to the viewer more than anything. I don’t really like the newer sequels myself. They also had a television show for a time, if you ever wanted to look into that I’d say it’s pretty fun. All in all, great review. It’s fun watching you two react to things. Here’s hoping for more.

Fun fact. Burt checks the revolver he gave Melvin even though he knows it's not loaded.
