When I ran power for my shop, we ran the conduit long before the building was up because I had everything tore up anyway. The electrician let me dig the trench since I was renting an excavator anyway. Then he came over the next day and quick threw the conduit in the trench before rain messed it up. It worked out great as the conduit was how he wanted it, but I still did most of the labor intensive work.

You stated in your video the purpose of the expansion coupling is to allow for ground movement but you installed the expansion coupling with one end securely attached to the panel and the other end securely attached to the house. I think it would be better to strap the upper section of the expansion coupling to the house. This would permit the lower section to move unrestricted with any ground movement.

just did 25 foot trench to my garage from the house...gotta do it like a drain line ..only use 90 elbows when you have to and avoid sharp bends and make sure bell ends are facing the right direction of how you wanna pull...i was only able to get 12 inches in some spots but i poured concrete over the shallow spots after i had pulled all my wire...inspector said no problem.

About to do this at my house, along with an electrician ( I hope he doesn't charge more for me helping😊😊). That's a great tip about the direction of the bell ends on the PVC. Many thanks for that.

Do you have a code reference for only using Bell ends on PVC underground or is that just your advice? I have a detatched garage sub panel job coming up and I dont own a heat box yet. Thanks in advance

Good video. Agree on banner, need to fade that out. Agree on why not to let home owners do it. Why not just dig new trench at 18" rather than let him dig down 3 feet again to fix?
@Petersonelectricllc5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Our newest videos in 2018 lost the banners, we changed this with our SEO vendor. If you trench 18" down you stay in your burial depth, if possible going 2' is safer but when you go deeper, it causes issues for hitting water and gas, besides it is harder to fix if something goes wrong.
@harleyroadster95025 жыл бұрын
agreed, just leave the old buried and start new on top of it at 18 inches. I don't think he understood your point.

I hated digging so always told cystomers that I was very slow at it and would be a lot cheaper to have a tee ager.or rent a difch witch to dig trench BUT had them leave ditch open for me to install the PVC. We call that an expansion fitting. Have to make sure that it is expanded when installing during hot weather. 100' of PVC expands 4" over a 100 degree temerature swing say from a zero degree winter day to a 100 degree summer day.
@janetyeoman1544 Жыл бұрын
I can see the expansion aspect, but 90% of it will be buried. Less weather effect.

Ur right this is why we don’t allow the customer to do any part of our scope of work. It Almost always cost more time n money in the long run Can u advise where in code to only use the bell ends on pipe underground?
@Petersonelectricllc5 жыл бұрын
No where in the code does it state bell winds that I’m aware. But in article 300-300.5 it takes about burial. But there is also a section on 352 for PVC Conduit

Would it not be wise to get the wire through a conduit before it is buried? Thanks for sharing.
@stevelopez3725 жыл бұрын
Jack Good idea for diy, contractors understand from pulling thousands of feet of wire and the fact there are codes relating to conduit sizing and bends allowable for pulling distances.

I ran 2" schedule 40 conduit to my detached garage. The trench was about 120' long at 18" deep. I didn't anticipate running any low voltage wiring like coax or cat6, and already backfilled the trench. If I use shielded cat6, can I run it inside the same conduit? I've heard mixed opinions about doing this. Appreciate the help.
@eferonbetancourt923 жыл бұрын
Can’t run cat6 and electrical in same conduit or box. Causes interference
@garbo89623 жыл бұрын
We always liked a minumun of 12" of seperation between line voltage and all low voltage wiring. ( evcept when 100 % in conduit ) At a hospital that I did some work af it was also their requirement. If a cat 5 6 or whatever was pulled into same conduit with line voltage it would require the same voltage insulation. Even when I installed power to air conditioning outdoor equipment always ran a seperate conduit for the 24 volt wire from thermostat. I pulled out thermostat wire that the jackef melted & stock to overheated line voltage. conductors.

I have a question.. i thought if it was burries you need to use direct burriel cable even if its in conduit. If not so then that neams i can run romex??
@Petersonelectricllc5 жыл бұрын
If you do not understand that answer to your question, you should not run your own wire. This has been explained in the NEC for the last three additions. Romex, is not in the NEC code book it is a slang term. The wire has to be rated for more than directed buried.

OF COURSE I have a "Grounding Bar" and a "GROUNDED" Bar, in my SUB-PANEL or called a "load center".
@gregbernard4466 Жыл бұрын
Use THWN wire as individual wires in conduit or use USE (underground service entrance wires). The w in THWN stands for Wet Rated because all buried conduit is a wet location. Probably due to condensation inside the conduit. The wires typically used are stranded for ease of pulling and flexibility. Usually THHN wire is also marked as THWN. UF or underground feeder cable is difficult to pull through a conduit but can be done especially with electrical pulling lubricant. That is the grey cable. UF doesn't need the conduit. If you are 120v and 20 amps or less you can GFCI protect the circuit before it goes in the ground and bury to a depth of 12". Otherwise it is a depth of 18". There are always other rules like if it goes under a driveway or if it is higher voltage or if you use metal conduit. Metal conduit can be shallower for example.

Don’t you just love it when a home owner wants to do it them selves? You would not go to a barber to have dental work done, at least I would not. You produce some great videos with great information, I am a degreed EE I worked for a an electrical Contractor working on electronics not Distribution systems back in the late 70’s before I started flying for a living. My first house I built I did the electrical work with the guidance of my former employer. Today I have need to have a load center added (100 Amp sub panel) to my current 200 Amp panel. On the sub panel a 50 amp branch would be added for an occasional use of a welder. And a twenty amp circuit for a band saw. I will tell you it is worth it to me to hire an electrician and have it done. Rather than I do it and find out something is not to code. This video got my attention due to the QO vs homeline panel and some welding involved. My guess is overtime the corrosion occurred under The lugs. Just a guess. Years ago I walked into a friends house as I walked past the Buss Fuse panel I felt the heat radiating from the panel.(East Coast near the ocean) he said it was always like that. I opened the panel removed the cover and the lugs were glowing. I ran to the meter base and pulled the meter. They were lucky the house did not catch fire. A new panel properly installed saved them.
