I have never been to a Jewelry store where they hand you the expensive rings/necklaces to try on... lol. That's absolutely insane. Most stores have fake replicas for people that insist on trying it on to get an idea of what it looks like. OR just take their picture ID and credit card to confirm ID and hold onto it while they are trying it on. If the "customer" doesn't want to give you their credentials... it's a thief especially if they act offended by you asking them for it. lol

"Maybe if they endured bigger consequences"...There is theft even in arab countries that chop of the hands of criminals....Even horse thieves in the past were hung in many parts of the world...yet people still stole horses.....the consequences can be as harsh as possible...the fact is that criminals don't think they'll be caught so the punishment doesn't matter....In many countries today, the punishment for drug dealing is life in a 3rd world/shithole prison.....or a death sentence, some via firing squad like China....yet people still deal/smuggle and are caught every single day in those countries. This simple minded conservative approach of "punish people harder" and they will stop committing crimes is laughable...sure being soft on crime will increase crime beyond the natural rate....but just like how there is a "natural rate" of stuff like unemployment, there will always be a natural rate/occurrence of crime no matter the consequence.
