This is why it’s best to decorate our homes in the way we enjoy rather trying to keep up with fickle trends. Trendy can get tiring and costly, plus things always seem to come back into style after a few years. If we hang in there, our current decor will eventually become trendy. 🙂

I don't understand trends. People buy expensive things and change their whole home just because they saw it all over social media, then get tired of it quickly. I think it is an idea that is now catching in the west and won't be going anywhere. Especially as people become more educated on sustainability and work to be less wastful people will be drawn more to items that are wethered and only gain more charm with age and use. I also think the problem with coffee table books is people buy them and never crack them open...I would love to see it become more common for creators of all kinds to put more thought into their book's cover and anesthetic appeal so then we can all have beautiful books out that fit our interests

I no longer live in CA, but I grew up in SoCal. Completely with ya on the earthquakes. I’ve been through a lot of quakes, but I was on top of the epicenter of the Whittier Narrows quake, and even though my cabinets were closed initially, that earthquake opened them up and sent my dishes straight out of the cabinet and flying across the kitchen in midair. It also sent my dryer sailing across the room where it got wedged in the doorway. So, even though I’m in AZ now, old habits die hard. Nope to the open shelves! And I still hate earthquakes, lol.

I like that you addressed opening up the book and looking through it (and reading it). Yes, it is aesthetically pleasing from the outside and the black and white looks great, but owning it and simply using it to “style” a space is what seems trendy-UNLESS you truly love the book itself. When it comes to design in the modern world, we have this incredible advantage past generations didn’t where we can access books, photos and peoples research from other times and places in order to reference what we want in our space. And a reference to a design style rooted in another place and time can totally be timeless, depending on how you style things. For example, when you see a mid-century modern home from the 1960s and one from the 2010s, there may be some pieces in common but the styling is completely different. And you can pinpoint the era it is from using key clues. But I think you can always take those elements or quality pieces and bring it into the next decade if you put a lot of love and care into your space. For example, I know for a fact that wabi sabi is a part of who I am. The concept behind it is so deeply imbedded into my heritage and the way I design a space, that I know I will incorporate it into my home no matter where the pendulum is swinging. (Fun Fact: I actually don’t even like the way Axel Vervoordt does wabi sabi at all!) So Arvin if you are a boucle for-lifer, go for it! And do it in the way that suits your tastes in each stage of your life. It’s not a bad thing to have something be a staple of your taste and it’s not a bad thing to let the zeitgeist have some influence on you. Keep doing what you are doing! 💕

I love black and white tiles. I had them in my kitchen 35 years ago. I had three young children and a Golden Retriever. The floor never looked clean! What didn’t show up on the black showed up on the white. It was pretty funny in retrospect!

"Timeless" decor accepts that every person has a style that is theirs alone. Trends are styles that are suggested by what many people do. I think trends can inform someone's personal style- maybe suggesting trying something new to freshen things up or a better way to make something work in your space. I don't think following trends just for the sake of being trendy is smart. I appreciate that you often state that you are expressing opinions that are your own and people shouldn't get all worked up if they disagree with something you say. Acceptance of people's differences is a wonderful thing. As far as open shelving... I am old enough to be very resistant to it...with exceptions. When we built our house almost 40 years ago, we put in storage cabinets galore. If I fully decluttered my house, I would have way too many cabinets. I think that having more open wall space in certain rooms would make the spaces seem larger. But the main reason I would resist open shelving would be that I know myself well enough to know that I do not like to dust enough to keep things clean. For me, practicality outweighs trendiness in that case.

I have National Geographic books on my coffee table: The Photo Ark, British World, Birds, and The Hubble. Things that fascinate me and I love and Respect i.e. Animals and birds. Enough of the Tom Ford and all of the other tired designers books one finds on everyone else's coffee tables. Yawn....

Boucle and open shelving have both been around for a long long time and I don't think they'll be going away. I personally love them. But they aren't for everyone. Love your videos, thanks for doing them!

The trends you mentioned are all a part of the classical lexicon. Tom Ford specifically, no, but big coffee table books, absolutely. The person who knows and is confident in their own taste will pick appealing elements that harmonize with what they already have. To do an entire home on trend is a recipe for dated disaster. Truly wonderful home design is a carefully curated amalgamation of appealing elements from a variety of eclectic sources. There's a reason for the term "fashion victim." Just my opinion.

I can appreciate you having a Tom Ford Coffee table book, because you obviously know who he is, understand his importance in his area of expertise and clearly have an interest in fashion. I hate when people only have books like that because it's a trend, imagine you have a book written about you but people only buy it because the binder looks aesthetically pleasing. Find what your interested in and buy books that reflect your personality and interests, your home should be the essence of you, not some random on instagram. I'm all for following trends but put your own personality into it. Also I honestly hate black and white check floors, but the beige version I'm thinking is going to be my new courtyard paving inspo ... so thankyou!

I recently bought a house that had the black and white tile floors in the grand entry foyer. It was one of the major features that I loved about the house. It was built in 2004. I painted the foyer walls black which made the floors pop even more.

Right before you held up the Tom Ford book there was either an orb, or dust particle, that came from behind you and floated to the right off the screen! 😲 I'm a new subbie, and love what you're doing for all of us; helping us "get it right"! 😘 Blessings my lovely, Washington State 🌲💕

LOVE Vervoordt, one of my faves. Have that book. Love Wabi-Sabi, which, really, is more of a philosophy than a style but anyway... Casual, calming, simple, peaceful, comfortable (OK, and, yes, luxurious.) I feel like I could RELAX in his spaces. And that is the deal-breaker for me--if I cannot RELAX in the rooms, then I'm out. Hate boucle. Hate open shelving. Love checkerboard but only in flooring. Own the Tom Ford book, too. lol

I love boucle! But in moderation. Limit it to just one piece in a room, like a sofa or chair - no more. The checkerboard pattern is a classic, always and forever. Instead of the Tom Ford book, opt for the updated Pucci book from Taschen. It's amazing and isn't as ubiquitous. Personally, I have a lot of beautiful things, but way too much for open shelving. It's attractive for barware, but not for a real working kitchen. Wabi Sabi is just too minimal for me. It's lovely in a picture, but too cold and stark for a home. I tend to like stuff - within reason.

I like the shelving in magazines and show rooms, but not in my house. I like clean and crisp clean looking kitchen and that shelving with displays would make it look crowded. Plus, it will get dusty and oily in time, especially in a Filipino house like mine where we cook hundred times a day.

Spot on Arvin! Sick and tired of "influencers" trashing styles just bc they are trendy. I have open shelves and I not only love them, they are practical. I had house guests who made themselves coffee and granola bc it was all right there. Any of the ones you listed would be great in any home. You don't need a whole house done wabi sabi, imagine a bathroom or a small library room. It's all about feeling good in your spaces and not trends. ☺

My childhood house had open shelving in the kitchen and they weren't difficult to maintain at all! I think what he said was right-just because something is on trend and doesn't fit your style and needs doesn't mean they aren't timeless or perfect for someone else's space.

Thanks for explaining Wabi-Sabi, and for the link to the book. I agree that it's often misunderstood. But this philosophy has been around for centuries and isn't going anywhere. I love it, but understand that it's a personal preference as far as interior design goes. However it offers a lot for the philosophical and actual lifestyle mindset.
