Many different occasions exist but work and death are timeless. The formalwear we dress the dead with. And the uniforms we wear to work for utility’s sake, those are timeless.

I also feel like there's a difference between "internet fashion" and "real life fashion" meaning a lot of trends and outfits I see people post pics of themselves wearing on Instagram or make videos about on KZbin I simply don't see when I'm out and about in real life. Like I see wide fitting stuff is really trendy with the fashion pages on Instagram but when I'm on a night out where people would normally be dressing trendy, it's basically still the same slim/skinny fitting cuts we've been seeing since the 2010s. The only people I see consistently wearing wide/relax silhouette clothes are older folks in their upper 30s and 40s who were probably wearing loose fitting clothes when it trendy in the 90s and they just never updated their wardrobes or sense of fashion

Also depends on age group and location. I’m go to hs in nyc and everyone wears what you are calling “internet fashion”. Of course there are still a good amount of people wearing skinny jeans and stuff but its mostly wide fitting clothes

I think the 2010's was riddled with corny, tacky, lazy, cheap clothing but I think the 2020's is going to be more curated in terms of clothing brands. I feel like everyone that was doing those brands in the 2010's has grown up and realised how terrible they are and they have to reinvent and renew themselves. on a side note I think solovair is about to become bigger than it is. I've said this before. I see Tyler the creator wearing solovair loafers, I see Ronning doing collabs with them and I see more awareness to their brand. Now as Ive said before I hope they stay timeless but I don't mind if their trendy. the only problem with something becoming trendy is the company will cut quality to sell quantity. we just have to hope moving forward that stuff like that doesn't happen

I think an underrated aspect of timelessness is silhouette. Silhouettes often change through the eras but a good mid-cut silhouette will always be in. That being said, I've been on this baggy pant life since 2020 and haven't looked back lol. I find a mix between workwear and business casual allows me to have a good expression of trends while having good basics to fall back on.

Gorpcore really is just another variation of techwear and techwear to me is timeless due to how long it’s been around. We saw the more flashy variation of techwear come into style around 2018ish. I don’t know if it had a name but it was very utilitarian. Lots of pockets, tactical vests, all black with silver hardware jewellery. It will be interesting to see what next variation of techwear will be trendy.

I think it’s crazy how fast new balance has grown back into popularity. A year ago you would’ve been blasted for wearing new balance 992 as they were “dad shoes,” yet now it feels like i can only see others wearing these types of shoes. No hate against it because I love when these types of things change and it makes the fashion side of life fun and interesting all the time when it gets shaken up. I’m so glad new balance is getting its love and it’s collaborations are getting better and better!

Love this topic and the vid! In terms of “timeless” you probably could have touched on outerwear/layering pieces - the Jean jacket, chore jacket, leather jacket, peacoat, hooded sweatshirt, crewneck, v-neck, cardigan, wool peacoat/trench, terry sweatshirt, fleece pullover. In terms of accessories, I would throw in a 2.5-3.25 inch necktie (prob silk), linen pocket square, baseball cap. While I do probably lean towards “timeless”, these comments have been helpful for me to realize that trendy pieces can make your wardrobe more fun and interesting

Trends are trends for a reason, things that didn’t look good wouldn’t become trends. It’s ok to buy into trends if you actually like them. What you shouldn’t do is hop from trend to trend just because it’s popular. I still wear “trends” from the past because I like them. It’s all about refining your own style and not just following what’s cool.

I think as other comments have said finding the right balance between timeless and trendy is the way to go. For me that involves wardrobe staples being more timeless pieces like Levis or Dickies. The gorp stuff is interesting because as an outdoorsy kinda person I have always had Patagonia Arcteryx to ski or hike and I enjoy the practicality of their clothes. But they are certainly a trend and I agree must likely to fade soon, at least in the zeitgeist. I Also appreciate shoes like Salomons having a moment because they are very comfortable and utilitarian. So I can rock them hiking, climbing, walking, or as a sort of streetwear piece. Anyways great video!

Gonna sound crazy but I find male fashion advice is so much more comprehensive & broken down, you guys are always talking about specifics. Womens fashion videos are always so airy showing off full outfit without talking about the items themselves. 🥰 Thanks man, I am loving your content! Wide pants are totally trendy - I think something that can help with the trendy vs not trendy with womens clothes is: if a women is plus size or overweight can she wear the outfit and look just as stylish as the models in the pictures? Timeless clothes seem to be so universal, like anyone can wear converse or loafers, anyone can wear collared shirts. Hiking clothes or gorpcore can be timeless in the sense that I don’t think the silhouettes are going to change a whole lot but idk if it’s going to be as stylish outside of the very practical and hiking community but that’s okay. Timeless doesn’t mean always trendy, preppy clothes are timeless but not everyone’s cup of tea.

I would recommend you check out Laini Ozark. I would say her content within the last year especially is very good & she’s done her own timeless VS trendy videos. give them a try

Great video. Here is a topic I have been thinking about recently: form vs function. It feels like ultra functionable clothes have been a response to modern consumerism. This can be seen in the vintage scene with the inflation of carhartt prices. The aesthetic is also growing in streetwear with the increase of Arc'teryx being seen on influencers and consumers alike. I have noticed that with this trend of functionality being seen as superior to flashier, more fashionable garments, there is a subculture of elitism that is taking root. People like to say that price of these high end brands can be justified by their quality, but I hardly think a Beta AR jacket will be two or three times as effective as my Patagonia goretex jacket. I remember in 8th grade how important it was that your black rain jacket was northface. Everyone had one and If you had like a Patagonia or a Helly and Hansen, you were made fun of. This arcteryx wave, feels similar, where people will say they like the brand and wear it because it's functionable, while in reality liking it because of the association it has to the people/groups they like. But why is this happening and why is there such a big hype on function right now anyways? I'm all for clothes that I can wear for the rest of my life. But sometimes it can be fun to not wear the same thing every day. Sometimes it's fun to wear a crazy leather varsity jacket or some wild cargo pants. I don't know why everyone wants to dress so "efficiant" as of lage. Any thoughts?

I think I fall under this category of consumer (with the hope I am not being elitist about it). I tend to Spend more on clothes if I know the quality/build On the item in particular is better than the average. The hype surrounding function I think has many layers to it. People want to where is something that’s functional and versatile, that will be cheaper to own in the long run versus relying on fast fashion. I think there might also be an aspect of completionism. For example, I went on a raw/selvedge denim binge in 2020 because I finally said “you know what, I’ve never owned a pair of jeans I like, and these are thought to be the most durable, etc, etc” And so now I own 5 pairs of varying fits and tones, And feel a sense of peace like ok I’m good for the next 5 to 10 years in terms of my denim. I don’t know if that’s just me though.

@@srooklyn thanks for the input! Imo completionism has been around in clothing forever. Although it hasn't always been called that. I totally get what you mean with raw denim. I went through the same phase. But I don't think completism inherently creates elitism. I know many vintage clothing collectors that ARE NOT snoody, arrogant, or self-centered in the slightest. And these are the guys that spend 20 years looking for the perfect kurt cobain tee and have 200 vintage nfl snapbacks bc thats just what they like. But I also come across vintage guys charging 150 for a post 97' detroit jacket (j97 not j001/lb6j) and then they have the AUDACITY to get mad when I tell them their jacket isn't from the 90s and that it isn't worth 150. When it really shouldn't matter in the first place. It's stupid that brands like carhartt have been co opted as "fashion brands" when they are specifically designed for durability. I'm glad people realize that carhartt is a stylish brand, but I don't want the brand associated with people like kanye, who would be scared to get their WORK jacket dirty. Same goes for arcteryx. It's meant to be worn and used, and it upsets me that people try to flex with it like it's something that it's not. Touch grass, go for a hike. (Not you specifically :) ) Edited: spelling.

Personally, I like to gravitate towards more functional clothing because I enjoy the features and versatility of outdoor clothing, whenever I wear a more form oriented piece of clothing, I feel like I'm missing out on the functionality of my performance clothing, although the divide between performance and casual clothing is becoming smaller as of late with "smart clothing" and brands such as Acronym and Veilance that have been recontextualizing performance features into more traditional forms.

I think New Balance is the IT brand of the 2020s. They keep true to their brad while making collabs that are not too far off their core. And they have entered the mainstream. I am 36 years old and I bought my mother 2 pairs of NB sneakers and she likes them design wise and wears them. And she does not wears sneakers typically. Worn by models in Milano and dads in Ohio. Worn from Australia to Bulgaria, from a boring to a hip area.

trends in fashion, to me, is like a the ultimate back handed compliment. at one point or another it brings people into the world of clothing and inspires them to find their style! however when that trend isn’t timeless, those items will kinda get brushed under the carpet and you’re left thinking ‘fuck why did i spend money on this that etc.’ but it’s so essential to get people to experiment with what they like to wear yk. then obviously the more you delve into it you’ll find what you love and just do your thing, going out and tryna find new pieces that are different and weird to some! dunno if that makes any sense loool but that’s how it goes in my head. trends are great for fashion and play a big role, but i think the more you get into your own (whilst you still pay attention and slide in and out of it, buying some pieces here and there, finding a balance) you just do your thing whilst the back handed compliment brings in more people ahaha - great video though man, love the stuff :))

I think slim fits are timeless. Maybe some times we’ll lean wider and other times slimmer but for the most part these cuts will stick where like very wide and very slim styles will have much fewer moments in the spotlight. I don’t think there will ever be a time where you can’t pull off a slim like 511 Levi’s or slim straight or obviously a classic fit like 501 but that’s a given. But yeah I think slim is here to stay, even if it’s not super trendy right now.

I think Jordan 1 OG color ways are timeless. While different collabs, like Travis Scotts or Off-White, or non-OG color ways, like the turbo greens or Mochas, are trendy. The shoe could be either based on colorway.

03:50 I think that another factor that is important to consider is how much certain silhouettes define its era. For me that is when something turns from a trend to something that is timeless. Since its influence during that era can be used by younger generations to put their own subtle modern twist on the concepts and push an item to timeless status. Great vid as always. Interesting point about the wide fitting pants. I definitely feel like it’s a bit of a trend as opposed to straight being timeless (imo). I’m 6ft 11 and I like experimenting with really wide fits to help balance out my proportions; but as you say it’s hard to get something to look big on me. 38 inside leg struggles haha

I agree I do thing it’s easy to call straight fitting pants timeless because it’s trending right now. Like 10 years ago no one was wearing classic fit. But I still think classic fit is timeless. I also think slim fit is timeless even if it’s not trendy right now. I just think the extremes of skinny and very wide will go in and out of fashion. I can see skinny coming back in like 20 years or something just as wide has recently but sticking to slim - straight will always be safe I think. That’s why I think slim straight will never have a moment because it’s always in moment in a way. It will never be trendy but it you will always be able to pull it off. It’s the safest and most boring cut. While slim and straight are always going to be safe and will be emphasized more during certain times. And skinny and wide will have moments in trend and moments not.

I feel like this year there is an interesting change in fashion and that the idea of super trendy and hype based brands like supreme etc back in 2016 or so is kind of coming to an end. Also with the footwear moving away from all of the "sold out in 30 seconds" sneakers that go for 10x of the original price in resell. I think it’s a really interesting time we’re living in right now for obvious reasons but in the scope of your video we’re literally seeing old trends be renewed. Renewed in sense of the old adage that “history repeats itself.” As a society, we used every ounce in our fibers to wear skinny and sometimes cropped cuts of bottoms. I recall especially between 2012 through 2014 was a period where the cuts were getting slimmer and skinnier. Super tight tees, super tight pants, for men, and shoot, wearing slim straight jeans we’re like wearing relaxed jeans. And now in present day it’s like we’re reliving the late 90s and early 00s. The cuts are getting much flared and we’re embracing full brakes again. You also mentioned a good point where flared cuts is timeless and been around longer more than skinny cuts and all I can think of is how “meme-ish” that ultra-tailored-no-breaks moment in menswear was at that time. But what I see more now is how we’re embracing both the relaxed and slimmer cuts in some outfits AND with sustainability being the buzzword/movement we’ll continue to see more of old/vintage and new pairings. Overall this was a great video and thank you for your insight.

I think certain aspects of gorpcore and utilitarian fashion will stand the test of time just because personally, I see techwear having longevity within streetwear going forward. Prada for example has been pushing conventions of techwear in their more recent design language with their sharp silhouettes and boxy fitting tops and jackets, as well as their footwear having blocky, tech-y elements. Brands like Salomon and Arc’teryx will continue to trend upwards in popularity, and other brands will start to dabble in that aesthetic as well.

Tough thing about fashion is the things I’ve always liked before they got hot I will continue to rock and people are so hive minded that they’ll only see as fashionable if you keep up with the joneses. That’s my biggest issue with fashion trends personally. It’s more of an ask to be accepted by peers than an expression of what you like. I’ve been rocking arcteryx because I’ve loved the brand for years and I love jackets. Probably have like 25-30 but now people think I’m a hype beast which is reductive. Just my thoughts. It’s like language where people jump on phrases so quickly and then toss them out while some people have always communicated that way. I’ve always done classic elevated staple/basics that I lightly sprinkle some tech wear and street wear or nerd merch into and then it blows up and it takes away from the intentionality of choices. I dunno I guess it’s not important in the grand scheme of things but while we are talking trends that’s just where I’m at. I like fashion because I like intentionality behind choices so I’ve got nothing but respect for people who love to express themselves that way but my qualms with it is saturation I guess. I think a tapered wool pant is a timeless classic for bottoms, especially for women. A slight taper flatters curves, and there are different iterations of this throughout almost every decade. Even joggers and skinny jeans/pants can be re-contextualized as a trendier iteration of a tapered pant if you really wanna go there.

Maybe it falls under the general umbrella of workwear but: hoodies. Literally the entire 30+ years I can remember being alive, hoodies have been the people's clothing. Pull over or zip they check all the boxes, been around forever, everyone wears them, go with everything.

Jordan 1 TIMELESS but right now is also trendy, but something like the Jordan 4 (although I personally love them) is trendy, the Jordan 1 is just so iconic and will always be in style because you can mash it into many different styles

Vintage Levi’s is having a big moment right now. Particularly their classic cuts like the 501. If Levi’s play their cards right they might be a big brand in the 2020’s. Right now though I feel like modern Levi’s has a certain ”tackiness” to it.

I think it's bc modern Levi's is constantly changing their catalogue and focusing on the quantity of pieces available over the quality of them. Finding a quality pair of jeans in there is a gamble because you won't know if it'll be there in a year. All that's guaranteed is knowing you're gonna have to get new ones at some point if your not a fan of fading lmao

maybe because i caught the itch , but moving down to florida recently - i def see more practicality in something like rain boots …specifically the balenciaga croc boots . i think that can potentially be a spring staple …it truly is just a stylish/ clean rain boot and rain boots have been around forever .

Shoes: Vans Old Skools - Timeless. In the same league as chucks IMO Tops: Basic T- Timeless in basic colors (black, white and navy) and medium fit (not too loose, not too tight). Bottoms: Flared Bottoms - Trendy. Very specific time periods where these were ubiquitous Accessories: Minimalist watches - Timeless. Think Bulova 96B104 (fairly unisex it’s so minimal) Early digital watches - Timeless. So many iterations of the Casio F-91w Aviators - Timeless. Ray Bans - Timeless. Bifold leather wallet - Timeless.

Flared bottoms are an interesting take. Not sure I can agree with that one tbh. Sure they've been around since the 70s, but they aren't always in style. Timeless to me doesn't ever go out of style and flared jeans definitely have. I would argue "wide fitting" or straight leg pants aren't necessarily timeless either. On the topic of replicas, I don't know if I'd say it's necessarily a trend. Maybe the current popularity of them is, but people have been making replicas of popular items since the dawn of time. Baggy jeans are 100% a trend. Baggy and skinny loop around in a 15-20 year cycles like clockwork.

When it comes to reps, the reason you are seeing it die on on stuff like tiktok is mainly because the videos keep getting taken down and rep content creators getting their accounts banned. I would say reps are even more on the rise these days, the repsneakers and repfashion subreddits has seen so much growth over the last few years it’s crazy I still haven’t bought into reps though, since I don’t go for hyped releases but I find them cool. It’s gotten to the point where most can’t tell real from fake

I feel like on today’s world, the biggest impact comes from celebs rather than brands. You see a celeb wearing a piece from a certain brand or designer and people immediately rush to buy said piece, or the dupes, and that may lead to trends. The people I’ve met who are genuinely into fashion rather than trendy stuff only are often trying to find brands and style that fit their bodies, and most of my friends end up coming back to brands like levis, vans and converse for items that are good quality and can be worn on par with the trends

Technically Selvedge denim had been around s long as denim had been around since all denim at one point was Selvedge. In the grand scheme of things the 50s aren’t that early in the life of denim as a fabric. But props to you for including it all all

I think also the Arizona Birkenstocks and possibly the Ugg medium top boots are timeless. Those Uggs were trendy at first then died down and now, in 2023, I've seen them make a comeback and I think they'll be timeless moving forward

I just came here for the stamp of approval on the loafers I just bought 😂 but aside from that I have noticed over the past two years I no longer want invest my dollars in quick trends but pieces that I can style and restyle over and over again. I mostly invest in men’s collared button up’s from thrift stores. Nice fitted denim. Knit and cashmere sweaters. Slacks, good quality jacket/coats now my first pair of loafers.

I think timeless shoe styles are what I refer to as the number one or two from tried, and true brands like converse Redwing, new balance. Number one or two being like an option on a fast food menu and often in one specific color. you have your Big Macs, maybe a quarter pounder, your whoppers etc. Examples of these include the amber harness iron ranger and the pro legacy 870 Mocktoe, NB 574 or Black and white Chuck Taylor. Like a blacked out low top chuck for example is almost a derivative trend compared to the black and white, maybe even red and white

The question if something is timeless or not is really personal. As an example for someone who loves basketball and appreciates the sneaker culture Jordan 1s will always be timeless. For people who only follow the trends and wear what is hyped, they are just trendy. Because after the hype they won't wear them. Dunks as an example are trendy in terms of streetwear. However, skaters have loved them before and will still love them after the hype. I personally have worn Asics, New Balance or Diadora sneakers for more than 5 years, because I love the retro runner sillouette. Although they are trendy and hyped at the moment, I will still wear them after their hype. So to me and my personal style they are timeless

I think most timeless pieces are pieces that when you see them they are not immediately associated with a specific brand or model except for a few exceptions. More like a group of items. For example a super chunky black boot that you know which brand it is/copy of which brand it is, is trendy piece but a black boot that you cant tell which brand it is will always be classic. I understand buying trendy pieces if you can afford it, are very interested in fashion etc, but for me, a student, if i like a trendy piece I try to find something in a similar style but not something that ppl will immediately know where it comes from, and I think it works well if tou want your clothes to feel like they ”last longer” if you talk about trendiness

i think that alot of times specific pieces or colorways are really trendy where as the type of item is pretty timeless,like for example arcteryx jackets are really trendy rn but another brand of like vintage hardshell jackets is something i can see myself wearing for the next 5 or more years. which is why i would always rather trift a trend, for one because its way less expensive and because its also something more personal and not the exact same item the next person is going to have oh and i also think its easier to always ask yourself if u could see ur self or just somebody 5 years ago wearing the item of clothing rather than speculating for the future because u tend to assume that u will for some reason like the same kind of stuff then that u do rn

The best move is to have a solid base of timeless pieces for basics, then add occasional trendy pieces to stylize the look. So that trendy piece could either be a shoe, a hat or a shirt, but never go all out trendy head to toe or else your style is gonna age badly.
