When I see a valve trombone, I ask myself this question: What is the use of the fake slide since it won't be used.

When doubling on instruments with different tuning (Bb an Eb for example) it's very easy to "lose track of the slots" and end up on wrong note. Any tips on how to approach this?

I have some issues when switching like you're talking about. Sometimes it helps when I play Eb to force myself to always to play 3rd space C (sounding concert Eb) 2/3... Sometimes the alternate fingerings can better solidify what instrument I'm using at the time ;-)
