Its wonderfull to see 14 the AEC matador still , l have done many miles in it, , 30 mph flat out but up hill and down, l once had it doing 50 mph on the M1 l sliped it out of gear going down hill, at that speed you need two hands to hold it so l could not get it back in gear and all this time l was towing a bedford bus, 50mph does not sound a lot but it felt like150 in the matador, Bill Redfern engine shop Barton Transport Ltd (Not Trent)

P S,,,,,,I forgot to mention about 14, one night I was taking her to Oxford when she had a piston seize when on the M1 as we had no other towing vehicle at the time I requested they send me the Bedford TK fuel tanker (Not one of the haulage fleet) but used to take fuel to out depots ,, I towed 14 in with it no problem (no one had towed with it before) than we went on to Oxford services to tow a Bedford bus in with it, we had to use it for a few weeks until 14 was repaired , Not many now know about the tanker it remained in it's colour blue ,a very under rated vehicle , reason I first used it it had a towing loop on the rear and the hose racks were ideal for the tow bar to be housed ,,One night a Bedford demo we were using konked out at Ilkeston, of we went with the tanker, we then got a nastie cop wanting to know who we were Problem the bus was green and the tanker was blue but neither vehicle ha our name on it, the rotten cop would not believe who we were, we pulled our overall legs up to show him we had BartoN trousers on ,, when on the

Bill is my dad. And yes he still has a beard. He now lives in Spain but comes back to the UK a couple of times a year. Where abouts in Chilwell depot did you work.

+Alistair Mann ,,,,,Yes I sure do beard and all , he started of as a week end part time driver and later became full time , did he work for trent after the take over ? l only worked 6 weeks redundancy under them and done as least as possible ,,

I worked at Chilwell BartoN Transport Ltd, from 1961(16 year old) until that awfull trent take over they did not want some others and myself but I did not want to work for them , few years later I worked a 6 month contract for N C T and was transferd to South Notts decent firm and liked working for them But when ones worked for BartoN no bus company can be the same , Bus enthusiasts could only dream of it, took my PSV in 1966 EE45170,,,, done repairs, breakdowns, recovery (buses and lorry's) psv driving service and private hire only thing I could not do was conduct as I am dyslexic ,, I like to think I worked well without supervision , The only time i was in charge of the firm used to be Xmas and new year bank hollidays on security work ,, later Worked for my self dismantling old Ford's near Boston, now semi retired keep and ride horses on my small hold in lincolnshire ,, Bill Redfern,
