i've been looking for this online for years. i love this so much. gary has such enthusiasm that it can seem kind of cringey but when you get past all that gary is just a sweet guy who was passionate about his art.

Gary's still alive, right? He seems like such an awesome guy, you can't help but feel happy when he's on camera, he has such charismatic, upbeat personality. His performance of "Please Don't Keep Me Waiting" is actually really good, he puts so much emotion into it, more than either Penn or Glover could seem to muster for the film. Hope he's doing well.

@wherestherealsky I'm glad you told me about Gary seeing it at Sundance. That does make me feel better actually. I suppose I have this nagging feeling because Gary is no longer alive and he can't be interviewed. I'd love to hear him say 'it was a long time ago and it doesn't bother me anymore' . We are on the same page, I hope you didn't take my following up comment as trying to stir something.

He does sound like Olivia, as much as a guy probably could.

@fascistbullygirl13 I saw it more as the filmmaker looking back at himself and the ethics of what he did. He agreed to go because he thought it would be hilarious, and I imagine the call asking him not to put the show on air actually happened. I guess that just haunted him, and he imagined these alternate scenarios he potentially put him through by doing that. Harris does portray himself pretty negatively. Gary seemed like a sweet upbeat guy though

@fascistbullygirl13 Oh definitely. As someone who makes films, I'd never consider exploiting someone like that. I don't think he atones himself, but he attempts it. I think he comes off as a complete jerk, but that's more what he did than how he portrays the character I guess. What did make me feel a bit better about the whole thing was knowing Gary did see it at Sundance, and Trent and Gary hugged when they saw each other. I think we're mostly on the same page though.

@fascistbullygirl13 Yeah, the whole Sundance story was pretty sweet from what I've read, Gary was the star for the night. I've just read something else though I didn't realise, apparently the attempted suicide wasn't actually made up for the film, which is totally mixing up my feelings on it. And I never thought that, don't worry! I'd like to think youtube comments can be mature debate, not just trolling, haha.

@wherestherealsky I suppose. But it's the overall tone that makes me feel bad about these films. Gary did really want him to film it and see it and so on. I guess if someone asked me to not release something they feel awful about I wouldn't. So, i'm coming at it from my own emotional angle, I'll admit that. He portrays himself as a jerk, but not enough. Even if someone asked you to exploit them it's still exploitation. BUT, all things considered, I can't get to worried about everything.

The 2 follow up films make him look as if he were some total weirdo loser outsider. In fact he was just a regular guy who loved to preform and obviously there was no getting anyone to agree to do anything. The band "The B-Steps" were having just as much fun as everyone was. He was just a sweet earnest guy, but of course something like that always has to get twisted into a joke.
