When you change where you keep your mouth on the mouthpeice to get higher up its gonna be harder to be flexible, so if whatever you're playing only has notes in the higher register i guess this could be good.

Being a Freshman in high school and playing trombone since my 6th-grade year, I have had only 2 months of band with a trombone player that has played for 7 years. He has taught me how to play higher than any of our trumpet players on a trumpet than me on my King 605 Cleveland small bore trombone w/ trigger. A triple high D is the highest note I have played.

@HeySydnii
@HeySydnii 8 жыл бұрын
Yes. The note can't be held for more than a second or two and I barely have my bottom lip in the mouthpiece. I have done it on a Vincent Bach 12c mouthpiece. I had a friend in the 7th grade who recently had a King trombone for sale for a great price and it was an old trombone that his grandfather played about 40 years ago. It is the only small bore trigger trombone i have ever seen or heard of.

My trombone was a Yamaha student model, with a smaller mouthpiece. Summer before my junior year, I bought a Schilke 52D, a much larger mouthpiece. It gave me a fuller warm tone, I liked it a lot. I found after working with it for a while, if I switched to my small Yamaha mouthpiece, I had a higher range than before. I would only use it for play time, how high can you go, type fun; because I liked the fuller sound of the larger mouthpiece most of the time.

I've been playing trombone for 5 years, I can play a double pedal Ab, and a double octave D on a good day. I play bass trombone in jazz and lead trombone in marching band. The question really isn't whether or not you can hit a really high note or a really low note its actually if you can play them musically and in tune. In fact, playing extreme high notes or low notes is best demonstrated while playing music in the band literature. Another good way to develop high notes and low notes is doing octave jumps. This tests your ability to hear and reach the notes readily.

When I was learning the trombone at school in the early 90s, I was constantly being nagged about mouthpiece position, always having it too low. I've never been able to play confidently above the F above middle C. Now in my 40s and going rather thin in the hair department, I have shaved my head and grown the mandatory goatee, but once again I'm finding that it is now uncomfortable to have the mouthpiece high enough and this isn't helping my range. How do you find your facial hair affects your playing?

Facial hair will affect the seal your face has to the mouthpiece, so I would recommend shaving the goatee or at least getting the hair far enough away from the mouthpiece to have a good seal. There’s a great number of fine looking people without hair on their heads!

I disagree, with practice these shifts can essentially be formed into one "pivot" that allows one to transition seamlessly through ranges. Every amazing trombonist that I've ever known who had incredible range started off exactly this way and then just found ways to connect the "embouchures" into one system.

Thank you for this video! I just had one question. Would you suggest using these techniques when actually playing a piece or scale or whatever it may be? The reason I ask is because of 2 possible problems: - If the piece or scale is played very fast, it may be difficult to move the mouthpiece at the required speed - the difference in embouchure may cause some notes to be out of tune. These are some problems I experienced, and I wanted to know if you had any tips or explanations. Thanks!
@TrentHamilton
@TrentHamilton 9 жыл бұрын
+Taran Kota These techniques are to enable you to initially reach the notes. With more and more practice you should be able to normalise your embouchure so that it doesn't have to change position as much.
@enjii
@enjii 9 жыл бұрын
+Trent Hamilton Want to know a pretty much equally good technique (that you don't need to move the mouthpiece). Simple answer, aim your airflow in different places in the mouthpiece.... Then it will be the same result that most people use. It's easy after a while, becomes a habit you don't need to think about and examiners and people won't get picky about it.

They actually don't make it anymore because they consider it too big, and I got the last one that they had at their factory. It's a great mouthpiece, and the biggest bass trombone mouthpiece on the market. Prior to playing on the 1/2XD, I played on the Denis Wick 00AL Heritage Series, which is the biggest bass trombone mouthpiece that Denis Wick makes, but not as big as the 1/2XD.

Beginning trombonist don't listen to this, you want to practice and practice high. You want to be able to skip from a pedal Bb to a super F? You are going to want a strong stationary face. No mouthpiece movement because that can change the way you sound and gIve you much more problems
@yyyy1885
@yyyy1885 9 жыл бұрын
It's better to just go with what is comfortable for the individual. You can change your embouchure for substantially lower, or higher notes.

+Zach McCartney If one wants to sound like Joe Alessi, or James Markey, one must play like them. The less variables you have as you play the more likely you to sound consistent through all registers. If you move your mouthpiece up to play hire, the mouthpiece is holding the lips closer to the teeth, the only way to truly sound good in those registers is to build the strength through Remington's and lip-slurs. I can play a pedal C and a double F without moving my mouthpiece around. Because I have built up the strength. On comment of what is most comfortable for the player is best, it is true that there are many different ways of solving the same problem, but there are second and third rate solutions to a problem that can be fixed by doing one superior process. The really good professional players we all aspire to sound like, all have a fairly consistent placement of slide positions and tuning slides, because they execute the first rate solution to its highest potential.

I was in a masterclass with alan baer once. All he talked about was how to sound amazing. He said range and technique should take a backseat. He said one thing to practice is buzzing on your mouthpiece and then slowly taking it off your face while maintaining the pitch. I've been doing it for maybe a month and I have to say it's the most effective embouchure muscle building excercise I've ever done. My parents say I sound completely different from how I did before that masterclass.

I play a small bore tenner with a six and a half A mouthpiece. I know it is possible to hit a pedal B flat with that setup. Do you have any tips to help me reach that note?

Yes, and the same idea for tubas? I'm a noob tubist and I want to be able to play higher notes, just for fun. I can already play the basic b-flat, high b-flat, and higher b-flat. (Three octaves.) Edit: My band director (I'm a 6th grader) has said that I should have my mouthpiece about 50/50 for general playing. The only times I have ever had different mouth positions in it were on accident. Otherwise I've not had a chance yet to try this tactic, assuming it is the same idea for tubas. (50/50 for normal playing, 35/65 for lower notes, and 65/35 for higher notes, or something similar to that.)

I already have a pretty large range on trumpet, I'm in my high school marching band and our music demands quite a decent range. I can get down to a double pedal A and up to an Eb above the staff, or an E but it's a bit wavery there. I can go higher, like double A above the staff but the sound is nowhere near as full as I'd like it to be and it's very wavery. I would love to know how to make that sound full and get my range up above a double C

Trumpeter2016 try to change up your embouchure, if you play right in the middle of the mouthpiece it may make your tone sound good, but your range worse, and always use more air for higher notes.

This video was very helpful, however, you blamed the instrument when you couldn't get any lower. My trombone instructor demonstrated double pedal notes. Notes lower that what you played, but he did it on a tenor trombone w/ a 6 1/2 al mouthpiece. I am however VERY impressed with your upper range, a can't get that high on a tenor.

i play tenor trombone, and my mouthpiece is very large, so i cant get to the high notes that easelly, for exemple, i sometimes strugle to hit an g4(i think its 4, but in my country we use other words). i have tried duzens of other mouthpieces in stores , but mine is the only one i feel confortable with, even tough its very old , probably older than me, and the outer layer where you put your lips in is very beatup.

Well, I have been playing for 8 months now now and I play first trombone with middle schoolers, the highest note I have ever played was a Bb4 (not in a performance, practicing). And my lowest note is an Eb1. Mind you I am in 5th going to 6th grade after summer. Low notes are better.

I'm a freshman French Horn player. I can play a few notes below an F, 3 octaves below the staff. So I can play pretty low. I can play a C above the staff, which is pretty decent for my age. However I want to be able to hit a double high F. How would I go about hitting that note?

Treble clef F or concert F? Cuz the first F below the staff is like a ton of ledgers down, times by 3 is rediculous.

Hrm. never could do much more than G reliably. But I don't think I could shove the mouthpiece up/or down my nose more =p (1s deep something or other was/is my mouthpiece, (bass bone)) I've just started looking at your stuff, but I'd be interested on your opinions between the shallow/deep mouthpieces (still watching, so sorry if you've covered it already).
