I fell into that trap when i first started learning digital art. I would go in and spend hours rendering something only to zoom out and hate it lol. Where as with traditional i would instinctively pay attention to the composition during the early stages.

Yeah, I have the total opposite problem. I love sketching, thumbnailing, loose drawing, getting the pose right, really feeling the gesture. And then I have to shade and paint the drawing, and I hate it. It becomes very long and I usually ruin my drawing. I have literally thousands of unfinished drawings and like 10 finished pieces.

Had a beginner artist ask me why my end pieces looked so refined and good with rendering. Truth is that 80% of the work is in the sketch, and maybe even lineart if you go for that. Now mind you, I'm more or less an adept. Not exactly a master or a professional, but experienced enough to know I've wasted too many hours pursuing self created rabbit holes. It's not about methodology, it's not about color theory or advanced complicated shading methods. Without a good sketch those are useless concepts that you shouldn't even focus on. Two biggest things are references and good sketches. References are the foundation and sketches are the scaffolding. You can't build a house, or later on a mansion without understanding either.

This makes me feel a lot better. I would get so discouraged thinking that after a long time of working on roughly sketching composition and poses, I would feel like I didn't have much to show for all the work I just put in. Knowing that it is normal and that I should spend a majority of my time and effort on this "first 10%" makes me feel a lot better about what I am doing. Thank you so much for your awesome content Trent. I am working through your Easy Art Gumroad course right now. Worth every penny and more.

I'm watching this as I get ready to make my first real serious comissions! 5 different pieces, with a more refined rendering. I wouldn't have gotten so far without the amazing support and knowledge that you Trent and other artists like Marco Bucci give out here on youtube. You guys are amazing, thanks for everything!

So true! As much as I want to rush into a new drawing, planning and thumbnailing it out saves a lot of time down the road.

Planning on buying your Hearthstone card workshop... Was actually looking at it before you uploaded this :) I feel like I sometimes don't fully understand how you make your backgrounds read well and know how to balance the amount of detail in an illustration. I render either too little or too much, but your video's and tutorials sure help!

Hey! Awesome video, I think it’s very well put together especially with tips about composition and posing, it’s something that was definitely taught to us a lot in college when I was studying animation and story boarding helped me see the big picture better and improved my work tremendously. I’ve got a BIG question for a video : If I was ever gonna ask for a video this is it right here: If it’s possible, can you cover how far in did you plan out the story of Creed before starting the comic back in the day/ How would you start one now? Did you have a rough script and storyline way in advance before doing all the storyboards, did the storyboards and vision come one by one, I just really wanna know like how to make your first comic today or at least head in the right direction. I’ve been reading a lot of books and scripts but nothing helped yet. I have all these characters sitting in the dust and I love them but I don’t know how to plan out their story well enough for a comic.

If you're building a house and the foundation is perfect and the framing is at least good it's gonna be alright, even if other things aren't up to par. If the foundation is garbage everything after could be perfect down to the millimeter and it's all still gonna go to shit lol

I really want to work for bungie as an artist for destiny 2. But I see others peoples art and I just have no idea how they even do that. I cant envision myself achieving something that great when it comes to digital art. I mean all i know know to do it do line art and a bit of shading on procreate. Im 18 but i feel like I already failed at my dream.

Actually this isn't really that great of advice. A good thing to have for creating paintings is having a methodical flow to your creation process through the ENTIRETY of the piece; You should simply be finding enjoyment and letting your mind truly flow and put yourself into your piece. You ARE your art, so you need to let your hand follow what feeling it desires to draw in. I know its confusing to explain in words, but that's because this is an answer that can't be expressed through a language... because it IS a language. YOUR language.
