My family immigrated from Italy to America in 1920 and they settled in Trenton. Owned a funeral home, raised generations of children and grand children. A couple went on to be professional athletes, a couple of them doctors and most of them very good family people. Sadly as I started to enter my early teenage years in the early 1990s it was no longer safe for us to just kick it outside the funeral home, run the streets like we used to. Trenton was a city that provided my immigrant family with all they needed to succeed in life. And let me tell you my family is damn proud of being from Trenton. Being from 'The Berg' was one of my PopPop's greatest prides in life so much so it was printed in his obituary. Chambersburg Trenton was a friggin paradise for my Italian family of 8 that came here on a boat, poor, from war torn Italy not knowing a lick of English. It brings me to tears to see Trenton today. It is a tragedy and a travesty.

When I was a teenager we loved to go shopping at all the great stores and have a nice lunch or go to a movie. Now I wouldn't walk down the streets of the city. Someone needs to wake up and make this capital city great again.

I AGREE, SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST USED TO LIVING AROUND TRASH, IT IS NOT JUST THE YOUNGER PEOPLE I SEE GROWN OLDER FOLKS THROWING TRASH ON THE STREET, RUN DOWN HOMES, PEOPLE LIVING IN THEM, YOU ALWAYS KNOW WHAT NEIGHBORHOOD YOU ARE IN, SOME PEOPLE JUST DO NOT CARE

Boy did this video bring back some great memories. Born and raised in 1955 and seeing those photos of classic locations, brought tears to my eyes. Especially seeing all the old movie theaters from back in the day and all the department stores. Even the trolleys brought back memories. I no longer live in New Jersey anymore, but I sure do miss the culture and the places to go eat. #Trenton #ThankYouRihik

I lived here from '79 to '83. There were only a few bad neighborhoods. Now the entire place is blight. The area I lived in had 6 shootings in a month a few years ago, and it used to be a great section. This is not just the state capitol, but it is also one of the most important historic cities in the country. But this is what we do--we let things rot and walk away. Pathetic.

I left in the 80s to Hawaii, best thing I ever did in my life! But still looking at this there are some good memories, Went to Hamilton West prom 1970 I think.. Went to Morrisville prom 1969 I think! Had a few girlfriends in the day hehe!!! Remember riding around the block center city state street? All the girls would ride one direction and the guys the other, When we made a connect we would say meet us in Sears parking lot! Haven't thought of those memories for a life time,, Used to go to Liberty tavern on S Broad street then it became the Widows Watch,, Played jazz at Lanzies lounge sp? Then changed to Tiffanies, Greenwood tavern, saw Mile Davis there at 16 years old, snuck in! Dobbs House Chambersburg, Pats Diner on S Broad st for 3 am breakfast after partying all night.. My 1st Love went to Hamilton West, broke my heart Lived on Genesee St, Center street, then Morrisville.. Too many memories to post after seeing this clip.. But happy I escaped to Hawaii! Aloha! Thanks for posting!

I left Trenton years ago, studied in New York, moved to Germany. It's clean, there is very little crime, socialized health care and education, government pays the rent if you lose your job. It's not easy if you were not born here (language and job skills have to be top-notch), but I feel safe here. I wish Trenton had what we have here. Americans could turn America into paradise instead of turning it into hell. It's a choice.

Real talk it's a choice, Americans literally drown themselves in their own ignorance and misery and blame somebody or something else, sometimes even another country

I live 20 minutes from Trenton. I would always avoid that city like the plague. Trenton used to be a safe and prosperous city. Rampant crime and poverty rule the city nowadays. This problem isn't exclusive to Trenton, it's happening to many different cities across the USA unfortunately.

Lovely video, thank you. Sadly though, no "new era" is arriving anytime soon. Gone are the days of corner stores, mom and pop shops and the endless string of factories that manufactured not only American-made products but the sustenance needed to support a family of four, not to mention the economic development a city needs to thrive. No corporation in its right mind would expect it's employees to relocate, live and educate their children here. Hollywood came scouting a few years back, and left running with it's tail between it's legs in fear. If it weren't for State government, this city would be full of tents.

I was born in the city back in the 50's same hospital and week as Associate Justice Aliltio(spelling).....I was raised in North Jersey, relocated back to the city in 1982 after I completed Law School ..... it hurts to see such a once GREAT town that now has no hope, despair ,sad because there were so many good people whom had pride in their homes, neighborhoods etc...However when the manufacturing jobs left in the 70's and 80's,CRACK hit the INNER CITY "streets" across the nation in the 80's ,Reagan's "Just say no" policy and " lock them up", Gov.Whitman cut the low and medium level state jobs which gave people a middle income household everything fell apart. Easy for people point fingers at minorities and others...I lived there for twenty plus years I saw first hand of what happen. When I gave up on the town,I had the means to relocate for a better life. Many of the people whom still reside there are "TRAPPED". Will the jurisdiction ever turn around, who knows I pray it does but with cuts in education, housing and continued lack of employment both private and State/Federal the prospects of such look BLEAK .
