When doing hair off buckskin my dad would work the hide by hand and then had an old clothes dryer with a bad heating element that he would put the hide in with some small blocks of wood and tumble it for several hours and it would come out very soft

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your presentation, it was really informative and I enjoyed seeing the process and it looks like a good workout. I'm going to try this on kangaroo skin, I think it would be ideal. Is there a "raw egg" smell on the finisher hide. Thanks again 👍🇦🇺
@TRERUNSWILD8 күн бұрын
At first there is a very slight smell of the hide. Not sure if it’s from the egg yolks or just the hide. It really isn’t very noticeable unless you are very close. It seems to fade over time. If you smoke the hide you’d never notice it.

Thank you for sharing this. I have always wondered about what it takes to tan a hide, but never really researched it. It would be really neat to see you take a a hide from the deer season all the way to tanning.

That would be a great idea. I'll work on that!

Hi glad to see you back on your channel. Trapping has decreased in Maine these days just because of the animal welfare group but the law here still on going.

Same here. I just do bounty work for animal control purposes. I think it's a thing of the past.

That woud be fun to try. I think it would be much easier than a beaver with the thin hide. The Otter was WAY easier. Those big ears and muzzle might be a challenge

Using a 3/8" vertical cable by pulling your skin accross to break up membrane and stretching would save some elbow grease. But no matter what tanning a hide soft is a lot of work.
@TRERUNSWILD13 күн бұрын
I actually bought a cable for that but havent even tried it yet. A single disc from a tractor pull disc would work as well.

Thanks for the info how about if you want to wash fur from blood drying on when skinning
@TRERUNSWILD17 күн бұрын
I would just use some dish soap and water. Wring it out good and dry it as usual. If you are using a flat board to dry make sure you dont tack the hide down tight to the board or it could mold. Leave it towards the top of the nails. Sometimes I stick a small boadr or stick under the hide to give an air gap on the fur side.

Get an old axe ,dul the blade and lock it in you vise blade side up to use to break your hides , allows for a steeper angle when pulling an stretching

What about mink oil have you ever used that that's what I used on my first deer it's still soft and hanging on the wall I know make oil cost a little bit more money than eggs but it's just a thought. Oh and that was a good 20 years ago

Does the hair fall out while rubbing the hair side?
@TRERUNSWILDКүн бұрын
Never rub the hair side.. Fold it over and only work the hide side. This process locks the hair in. just keep folding and stretching part by part. If you were referring to the otter, no hair slippage or singeing. Turned out great

Would scrubbing the hide with soapy water help remove the fat or just wreck the process?
@TRERUNSWILD9 күн бұрын
I think a light touch might help as long as you didnt let the hide absorb too much water
@Dion-bc4th16 күн бұрын
You don’t salt it, and soak it in a brine?? I did this just the other day
@TRERUNSWILD16 күн бұрын
No I don’t. What does that do for the process?
@Dion-bc4th16 күн бұрын
@ helps preserve it better I believe.
@BobOwen-e3e14 күн бұрын
It will pickle the hide if you make a salt and citric acid mixture get some ph testing strips and keep mixture at a #2 on the test strip. This will set the hair and prevent any slippage.
@TRERUNSWILD13 күн бұрын
I'm not really interested in using chemicals. my brain tan lasts decades but that doesnt have hair. So far I've no slippage on finished fur hides but maybe long term they will?
