This is one of BTS's most political songs. It's hard for a non-Korean to tell because he's using local slang, but RM's verse was very controversial at the time, and it could be the real reason this song was actually banned from broadcast in South Korea. Yes. This and many other BTS songs are banned from broadcast. Sometimes it's legit because of branded product mentions, but other times the government gave a flimsy excuse like "vulgar lyrics" as in this case. His verse is not actually translated to English correctly. It's both a play on words and a critique of the Korean economic system that prevents his generation from getting ahead. He actually says "Giving up on three? Giving up on five? Well I like beef jerky, (pronounced 'yook') so I guess I'm giving up on SIX" (Also pronounced 'yook')" This is a reference to the Korean versions of Millennials and Zoomers. They are called the 'Give up 3 Generation' and the 'Give up 5 Generation' over there. This is because they say they had to give up dating, marriage, children, then home ownership, then even having a career just to survive because of greed and policies created by the "Storks." Like our own boomer generation, the storks got rich fast during a growing post-war economy. Now just like the boomers, they criticize younger people for not trying hard enough despite the changing economic conditions that make it impossible for them to get ahead. So the song has a hidden second meaning. It seems like they are just flexing, but the lyrics could also be read sarcastically, as if they are mimicking the way older people accuse them of just clubbing and partying instead of working hard. This is a theme that runs throughout the songs from this era, but it's only obvious to South Koreans. They are often reminding their fans "It's OK, you work hard enough, you're not a loser if you're not the best." It might seem trivial to us, like silly new-agey affirmations. But S.Korea has the highest child suicide rate in the world because of the pressures to succeed. And at the time, no other group was writing lyrics like this. It was literally a revolution. They were not the first to make controversy. K-pop actually began as "protest" music. But it morphed into something commercial. BTS brought the music back to its roots. In 2015, South Korea's government was very corrupt, and in danger of reverting to a military dictatorship. A year later the president was impeached and she went to jail. Sho only got out last year in fact. The generation BTS belong to now call themselves the N-po Generation (giving up endless things) because after they added friends and a social life, they decided to stop counting things they have given up.

JK may also have been referencing their show, American Hustle Life, from when they visited LA. They met some old school rappers and were unknowns, walking around the streets barely getting recognized. How things have changed.

Ya considering these are their early years before they got big budgets, they were still able to bring us really good music videos and entertain us with what they had to work with. That’s a testament to how great they are, they can still wow with what little they had unlike groups with all the resources and money backing them but still not BTS level.

This is the video that got me into BTS. I saw it on a react channel, and was like what in the hell did I just watch. I am 69 ears old so Ive experienced a LOT of music, but this hit different. This was in 2015. Here I am 8 years later, and to say I'm a fan of these amazing young men is an understatement. They are so very talented. I love them all, but I do have a bias Jimin, and a wrecker, J Hope. I am so very proud of them and all they have accomplished. I feel like a proud Grandma.

This group’s dancing is so tight that they’ve been on a few shows and they play random music and BTS has to dance to it. Sometimes it’s sped up and they just jump in on the choreo and dance to the speed it plays.

The rules of real manifestation in this lyrics: have a burning desire, send your wish to the universe but then put real hard work into it. It is amazing: 2015 they said the want to get big, then work all night and then: the dream came true.

This was in 2015. That is the year my daughter introduced me to BTS and I have been in love ever since. They received so much hate back then. People would mock them they even got robbed of awards and because of their label being so small. When they first started they all slept in the same room and they couldn't even afford to eat meat. They would put in 15-hour days in the dance studio to the point where some of them like jimin would fall asleep there. Put it simply they went through hell and worked very hard to get where they are and nobody handed them anything. Seeing their struggle and hardships and them overcoming them is why I fell in love with these boys. I will forever be a fan. They are the most genuine loving humble people I've ever seen. I thank you for being respectful and appreciating their talent even through a language barrier.

Awesome reaction! there is no ending to BTS dope dancing skills. I got a bunch of ARMY favorites: From the time BTS was hungry for success (and literally too) Low budget BTS: - We are Bullet Proof part 2 Official MV and Dance Practice video - No More Dreams (Debut song) Official MV and Dance Practice video - N.O. Official MV and Dance Practice video - Danger Official MV and Dance Practice video - War of Hormones Official MV and Dance Practice video - Boy IN Love (Do not confuse with Boy WITH Love, totally different songs vibes and eras) Official MV and Dance Practice video From when BTS started making it. Mid Budget BTS: - DNA Official MV and Dance Practice video - Save Me (one shot video) Official MV + Dance Practice video + Behind the scenes to watch the camera work with the choreo. - Not Today Official MV + Dance Practice video - IDOL Official MV + Dance Practice video There are plenty more...

RM's verse and it's explanation: Given up on 3 (SAMPO)? Given up on 5 (OPO)?? I like the number 6, how about giving up on 6 (YOOKPO)? Explanation: Sampo Generation (“Three giving-up generation”) is a neologism in South Korea referring to a generation that gives up courtship, marriage, and having kids. Many of the young generation in South Korea have given up those three things because of social pressures and economical problems such as increasing cost-of-living, tuition payments, and affordable housing scarcity. There is also the opo sedae, or “five giving-up generation”, which takes the same three and adds employment and home ownership. (Source: Wikipedia) Then, since I like beef jerky, let me be Yookpo Generation Wordplay: Since I like 육포 (beef jerky), let me be 6포 (six giving-up). Both 육포 and 6포 are pronounced yookpo. (source: doolset)

I’m excited for you guys to watch the Baepsae (Silver Spoon) dance practice ~ if you haven’t yet. It’s just so good ~ with a deep political/social meaning in the lyrics. You guys rock! 💜

The dance really made the song. The dancing got your attention and then you listen to the lyrics and see these boys’ work ethic is crazy. They put it in from early on. That’s why they are where they are today. And if you think about it they were doing these fire dance routines early in their career, and it’s still fire today! Being relatable and relevant years later…That’s hard to pull off but they do just that!
