+Dylan Anderson I think it means that if you define yourself and pride yourself in that defination you will suffer. For as he describes "what you understand is who you are" and what we understand is constantly changing so we must accept this change and flow with it. Thats my interpretation.

Dylan Anderson it's a poem. my interpretation it , refers to animals along the banks, that came and left , but the bank was left un damaged. so when you look at the banks it's still the pristine river the clay, and all the animals left was hoofprints. another allegory is that clay in philosophy refers to one's own reality , the shiva, the awareness. pot jygs etc made of clay refers to individuality. so any suffering is just a hoof print in clay. the clay itself remains undamaged , it's fundamental character is unchanged, being of the nature is shiva, satchidananda, truth consciousness and limitless happiness. so despite undergoing sufferings your essential nature was unchanged bliss , all it left was hooofprints.

So my interpretation is that if I take a holy name(or choose to remember Love aka God) then my suffering will seem like a hoofprint in clay aka a thing of the past, just a memory. Hope this supports. One Love!
