Those two statuses aren't mutually exclusive. He is an immigrant who also represents Germany* and is paid for this - just like dozens of trainers, sponsors and other members of the whole system who put their hard work and expertise into the results and into making him the best athlete he can be. If he's also German - because an immigrant can become a German both as a citizen or as a member of the nation** - either through process of cultural adoption or naturalisation or being born to a (partially) german family abroad - although unfortunately many people of turkish origin don't consider themselves german and even despise german culture (it's not like I disagree in that regard lol) creating large colonies which are often considered by their inhabitants to be actual turkish land, so it is understandable that he might not be accepted as a member of the group by certain people who don't know anything about him BUT that he represents Germany - which is the important part for them. *even if he's not considered to be german by himself, members of the group, nor doesn't present objective qualities allowing for attributing him to that it, he still is there to represent Germany - not himself, Turks, his family or immigrants. I know, it's hard to accept that someone from an outgroup could represent the ingroup but we do it all the time - ever heard of outsourcing? :v And even then it's not really outsourcing since he belongs to the whole system, this unholy machine needed for large enterprises (such as a national representation at a major sports event) to be succesful **as considered by others/represented by certain beliefs he holds and cultural frame he fits into/as felt by himself

As a French, I wasn't offended by the original joke, because that's the point : it was a joke. It wasn't funny because it's a running gag everyone already knows about and the speech was pretty lame to be honest, but it was still a joke. I took it as such since it was stated by a comedian on a satirical talk-show (context, like Trevor says). Also, it's well known the French have much trouble laughing about themselves. We're great to tease others but we don't like being teased, especially on the question of race which is a rather big deal here: the word "race" itself is racist, when in America, everything revolves around this idea. It's just two cultures who had a misunderstanding, I didn't see anything more to it. Now, I'm still glad Trevor came back on it and explained himself. I believe the duality and nuance he's speaking of here (players being both French and of African descent) is what was missing in his original joke, so it's good that he made it clear this time. What people have to understand is that the USA and France were built upon two opposite principles. America was built upon the idea that individual freedom should prevail, but in France, society is everything. You're part of a social group that identities itself as French before you're an individual with different origins. This is why it's easier in the US for people to claim their descent: African American is an expression that doesn't shock most people, but in France, if you call someone an African French, there's a good chance you're a supporter of the alt-right party, because only them uses this argument. But don't get me wrong, it's perfectly fine to talk about someone's origin or background in France. I am of Armenian descent, people get curious, they ask questions, they want to know who in my family was born in Armenia, when and why they came to France, etc. It's all good and fun unless I suddenly identify myself as Armenian, or even Armenian French. Then they'd ask why, because it wouldn't make sense to them. Suddenly I would be distancing myself from the social group and you shouldn't do that in France. This is who we are, culturally speaking, this is the value we share. If you're French, you must identify yourself as such. It's ok to talk about origins, it's ok to say you love your country of origin. It's just no quite ok to say you feel less French because of it. So when an anglosaxon points the finger at our national team for being composed by players of African descent, and when this aspect is what he highlights instead of their "Frenchness", we fly off the handle a little. I think people don't have to reach common ground, but it would be nice if both countries could open their minds and understand that what's wrong to them isn't necessarily wrong to someone else, and that this is ok... Cheers from France!

What I find interestin about the US is that there are African Americans, Asian Americans, Indian Americans, even Native Americans; but when it comes to refearing to white people we don't say European Americans, we just say Americans. If somebody could explain it to me (respectfully), I'd be glad to listen
@missolympiabinewski3 жыл бұрын
Not really true. We have Irish Americans and Italian Americans that have very proud cultural organizations, parades, festivals, etc. In Chicago there's a Ukrainian American society and a Polish American one. The odd difference is that America tends to lump people more broadly from non-European places. You'll hear Asian-American more often than you'll hear Japanese American or Korean American. You'll hear African American before Senegalese American. It's not always true. Mexican-Americans are Mexican Americans whereas a Chilean American will more likely get labeled Latin or Hispanic. Anyone from the Middle East is just Middle Eastern not Syrian, etc. I'm not sure I understand why really. Maybe we see more specifically the cultural differences among white people and have a slightly racist inclination to think of non-white people as coming from the same or similar places. Obviously there are rich cultural differences and even troubled histories between Chinese and Japanese people but often when they are both in America they are just Asian-Americans. A group identity that wouldn't exist outside of our country.

Asian Americans and African Americans wind up having a lot in common based on how they are treated which forms cross-national bonds. So Nigerian and Ethiopian Americans are united in a group identity based upon similar racist treatment. It creates solidarity. White people don't do that to other white people which means you get these more specific ethnic and national identities. You can be a Greek-American and not just a European American.

The thing is, France won in 1998 the World Cup too and then a famous racist politician in France said France didn’t win, that he didn’t see any French players in the team and that he couldn’t recognize his country in that team. It was a huge deal back then, as those players were born and raised in France and it was a disgrace someone would imply they re not French, every Frenchman felt like he had to show his support to the team being French. And I agree that if we're going to hyphenate anyone's identity, we should do so for everyone.

Many white people do call themselves by their national origin, especially if their family recently migrated to the United States. If you are in Chicago, many people refer to themselves as Polish-American. If you are in Jersey, many people refer to themselves as Italian-American. If you are in Boston, many people refer to themselves as Irish-American. In all honesty, the individual giving himself/herself the label is the only one that can say who they truly are and how they want to be identified. I think to Trevor's point, people have the option to be both in the US. This is not the same case in France.

Yea, being a North African myself I can assure you that in order to be French you need not only to cut off your African roots and throw’em in the garbage can, but you need to offer to the country what the average high-born French cannot offer. You’ll get to live as a French, but in their eyes you remain African. Nonetheless, the French people are so nice it is some times overwhelming and of course you’ll run into a racist every now and then, but thus far they only represent the minority.

jay dee I'm a French white man and you are right, the big flaw of the French system is like you said: magically, french identity erases everything and we are all equal. Except, in every day life, people are still discriminated for their origins. That's because the system is ideological (jacobinism) and not pragmatical. But aren't you like me, when you hear someone says: "It's not France who won, it's Africa", it doesn't sound right: as a Frenchman, I only hear far-right, racist cunts say it. It's a matter of culture: in USA, people are proud to say they are "African-American", in France it sounds discriminatory if someone would say: "he's a Maghrebin-French". What do you think?

As someone who grew up in France before moving to the US, I can say that what Trevor said is true. Both my parents are from Africa and I was referred to as an 'African' for as long as I can remember. However the moment I started to achieve stuff and get great test results, I was 'doing France a great honor'. The thing about France is that they try to separate the cultures you have to seclude a person into being only 'French', since that's what they believe is the best result one can hope for. I agree with Trevor 100% on this, even the part about the US. Thanks for taking about this!

I think that as the ambassador wrote, the players origins are individuals but the team as a whole is French. He did not say that they don't have backgrounds, he said that the team was French, as he wrote they grew up in France and were raised with French values, do they have multiple cultures, sure, but the team isn't African. And actually, France is a country that recognizes bi-nationality, I myself will be French and Canadian. The ambassador did not say that they can't be both, only that the Team, is the French team and that is the country they are representing. They can also be an inspiration for Africa of course. And as Trevor said, it's all a matter of context, you should see all the comments on KZbin only that attack this team and denies these player their "Frenchness", comments implying that they are a sort of mercenaries playing only for the money while denying the fact that the players actually learned their trade in France and attended school in France. I don't think Mr Noah should see this as an attack towards him, it really is a matter of responding to a phrase that has been said way to often by racists. The players themselves have said on multiple occasions that they are sick of being called African while wearing the French shirt, of course it wasn't for the same reasons as Trevor's, but they still want to set the record straight. Look at Benjamin Mendy's tweet responding to a post highlighting all the origins of the players by placing them beside some African and European flags, he responded by placing a French flag beside every player's name. I know Trevor didn't mean it as an insult, and I'm sad that it is perceived like one, but people have to understand that this comment has been said way to many time to diminish these players attachment to France. You can have two nationalities in France, be from any country, but it is true that if you represent France, it is a French victory first. As for the comments about the African man awarded French Nationality for his heroic behavior, he doesn't have to renounce his Nationality, he simply can, and has, embraced a second one and he will represent France while being a fireman as he said he would become one. He will also represent his country of origin while doing so, but every action he undertakes under the name of France, is French. So yeah long post, but what I mean is, this is not an African team, on the other hand, it is a French team, filled with players that individually bring with them other cultures. That it essentially what the ambassador said. As Obama said, they may not look like Gauls, but they are French, and for a piece on France winning the world Cup, that should be enough no ? Don't misinterpret what I want to say, I understand what Trevor said in this video and I share his beliefs as I'm sure the am assador do, but the ambassador was right to call Trevor out for his comment that can be seen as inappropriate, especially the "you don't get this tan by hanging out in the south of France part" which can be interpreted as saying that they don't look French therefore implying that their skin colour as something to do with being French. None of them are any less French than I am.
@stevoforce6 жыл бұрын
Pierre-Emmanuel Bois The point is, for Trevor to receive letter from the ambassador, its a big deal to deny they are Africans
@kattharsismic6 жыл бұрын
stevoforce the ambassador only denied that it was Africa that won the WC and stated that the players are French and therefore France won, he also stated that each player takes his own individual background with him. He never denied that some of the players were also African. I have to say that in his original piece, Trevor tone seemed to be less about celebrating the African heritage of the French players than it was to say that it wasn't as much of a French team as an African one that won the world Cup. So the ambassador has every right to respond to it the way he did, and I think that it was meant to be read calmly as the words written are not vindicative at all. I'm a big fan of Trevor, but his approach wasn't a really good one in the original video and I didn't like the way he twisted the ambassador's words in this one, as it never was about saying that they can't be both African and French. And honestly, in France it's pretty common to celebrate both of your nationalities if you are a dual citizen and not at all a problem except in front of a nationalist or a racist which aren't as numerous as some would've you believe. But then again, everyone can make mistakes, but I think Trevor wasn't very good at owning one there and was back pedaling a bit while putting words in the ambassador's mouth. But no hurt feeling from me anyway I'm a big fan of Trevor, just disappointed on those pieces. And honestly, most of them aren't African who can become French as he said, they are French guys who happen to have African heritage from their families, they were born French. The colonization part was also a, pardon me, dick move, it is true that it originated from it, but the diversity in France is not less beautiful because of it was born from blood, quite the contrary, France has acknowledged it's faults, but worked towards integrating everybody, celebrating multiculturalism. And it is true that people do not identify by race in France but do speak proudly of their origins, be it from within France or a foreign country. A French woman born from moroccan parents would proudly refer to herself as French with morrocan origins, not African-French.
@tomr58036 жыл бұрын
As someone who has lived in France, I can say that the French have, generally, no problem whatsoever mocking others but can absolutely not take anyone making a joke of the French or France. France is a country that tries so hard to be monolithic in subsuming all non white cultures into an overwhelming white French culture. The only time that the French celebrate their minorities, especially the non white ones, is when they bring glory to France. Otherwise, it's the African immigrants, the vagrants, the trouble makers in the banlieue, etc. There's a great hypocrisy in the French culture.
@Chuks6 жыл бұрын
Pierre-Emmanuel Bois I don't think it is up for debate that france won the WC. It's clearly a joke that no one should pick offense on. Trevor is a comedian like we all know, so he will always say random stuffs like this to appear funny. I think the french ambassador should look up the definition of the word "JOKE".
@kattharsismic6 жыл бұрын
DTR DTR it is absolutely true that we are first to laugh of others and first offended, but we are not forcing a white culture onto anyone, only values that are supposed to be universal, their are some bad policies for sure, but it is not about pushing away the origins of people, it is more about sharing something as a people. There is indeed no celebration of minorities though, but no segregation or attacks either, except From racists and bigots. Plus arts, language, studies have been heavily influenced by the different minorities, simply listen to French people speak and hear all the Arabic slang French from all colours including whites use daily and realise it really is more of an exchange than you think, same thing for pop music.

They are a team of French Africans. Why is this such a hard concept for French people? The point he makes is that the forcefulness of making them 'French' in fact robs them of their heritage and origins, which less we forget is steeped in Colonialism. The reason the joke is funny is BECAUSE it is a given they are French, and ironically African, when they are a minority representing the majority. Again not a hard concept.

Tithe Proven Lmao have you ever seen even one video of the french team behind the scenes? They've never ever hidden their african roots and nobody asked them to. You can be french and african, but it's not because you're african that you have to forget you're french as well. That's just basic etiquette for french people. And this Noah dude did exactly the contrary, he dismissed the FRENCHNESS in the French players to basically reduce their identity as African people only, he downplayed the achievement of a french team.
@titheproven9546 жыл бұрын
Trevor identified them a French Africans. (I already explained that when I explained the joke that seems to fly over French peoples heads...that it is a given that they are French etc. etc....There is also a level to the joke b/c Trevor the Black guy FROM Africa is the one saying makes also ironic) The are both, b/c that is what they should be able to be if they want. To me it comes across as France being super defensive not out of respect or defense of the players. But more about their Ego in winning a FRENCH world cup. To me it comes across at trying to white wash the culture and history of the players. It is worth pointing out that many "people of African origin" are often washed of WHERE in Africa they come from b/c long histories colonialism. While not the whole case with this particular team as they can and DO have the ability to know just what country in Africa they are from; It does not negate the fact that for those who can't they are a representative of the whole. Trevor even goes specifically into this by say the whole of Africa rejoiced are the French victory b/c to them it was as if they also won. African culture as a whole continent is very much a thing. Large in part due to the continent as a whole being raped by mostly European nations. The problem with being so insistent that they are French first is that is just comes across as France trying really hard to not have to admit that these men ALSO have Origins outside France and those Origins involves the French being historical monsters. America knows we where monsters when we where slave traders; Europe always comes across like they wish to sweep it under the rug.
@hineyla9576 жыл бұрын
You have the wrong point of view here. It's the point of view of an outsider. You should be warry of one thing: racism in the USA isn't of the same nature than racism in European white countries. Listen, don't trust your Noah dude on this one because he views French society in a completly wrong manner. I have both nationalities : French and Algerian. My country did a genocide in my country. I can never forget this, and I can never forget the culture I have that comes from my Algerian roots. BUT Seeing me as an Algerian BEFORE being French basically means to me that I'm less French than white french who have been living here from hundreds of years ago: I'm as french as them and it is not the right of my co-citizens to dismiss/downplay the work/achievements I do in France, for France JUST because I'm Algerian. That's where we come from by saying Mr. Noah popularized and used a joke with an argument used by far-right movements, Nazis and racist people in France: those person don't see the french in me, they only see the African me. I'm not french to them, I'm African, and I'll never ever be french. And then they tell us "Go back to your country!" Trevor said "Congrats Africa... don't tell me they're French? That's impossible!" blablabla : he only saw the African in them, just like how the racists here do. That's why when we have a successful multicultural team like the one we currently have, we strongly want to make the point that "They're french!" to show them racists that skin colour doesn't matter when we hit it big for France. That multiculturalism is a good thing for France. That even if they're black and of African descent, nobody now can tell them they're not french, because they did the biggest deed they could. If we claim them as french SO MUCH it's because we need successful POCs like them as examples of integration, so french POC won't need to prove their frenchness forever. France as a nation is working hard against racism and inclusion. And people like Mr. Noah should respect that and our ambassador for standing up for us, french POC.

I'm french and I understand both the government and Trevor on this one. What you need to understand is that in France, we do not embrace communitarianism as well as other countries such as the US and the UK. That is why the French government reacted the way they did (that + the fact that the argument of "they are African" is always used by the racists). And, as we do not embrace communitarianism, we always refuse to identify the players by they roots. The only people that do that are the racists, that's all. You'll never hear a French speak about someone using their origin or skin color. Hence, where in the US you can refer to someone as "African American" in France you can't do that, as that would be considered rude.

Later, I came to realise that you're not one or the other, you are both. Also, I came to realise that national identities are not shared, so you're not only half German and half Namibian but you're a full German and a full Namibian. Also, to the thing about their french-africaness: When I lived in France and told them I came from Namibia (they were first like where? And then I said it's next to SA then it went ohhh, but that aside) there was always some confusion like: then why are you not black? I have been watching the recent comments on this world cup from a distance and never thought I would participate in this debate. I feel obliged to say a little word because I do watch this show and have a lot of respect for Trevor Noah's work. I feel that people, including Noah, countless times refer to these players as "Africans". This is in itself either insulting, or a display of total ignorance of the fact that Africa is NOT a country. It seems like people are equating France (as a country) to Africa (as a continent). You rather speak of the players' respective nationality if you really feel obliged NOT TO say they are French. It is like saying Michel Platini is European-French (when we know his ancestors are Italian), or say Youri Djorkaeff is European-French (instead of its Russian origin). Strangely Zidane was/is never referred to as an African (but at worst as an Algerian). Hugo Lloris who was the captain of this winning team is never referred to as a European (to speak of his non-French nationality), nor even as a Spanish (his parents are Spanish), but as French. So the question is, why do this (African) origin thing only come up when the person is of a "different" skin color. Trevor, why can't they be French without necessarily being of "something" origin? I would take your "defense" seriously if you do the same work you did on "Africans" in the French team on other people who are also not "originally" from France, but who are not noticeable by their "color". We will see how that sounds... It probably won't sell!

I was born in France, and I am from African descent (my parents were both born in Morocco). What I learnt, growing up, is how complex identity is. I guess many children in my situation experienced it : you feel torn between your parents' legacy and the own legacy you're creating, in a different country, in a different culture. Now, I thinks those two clashed not because I was surrounded by racists who pointed a gun to my head and said : choose ! But because each culture has its own system of values, thinking, etc. I wouldn't be the same if I had grown up where my parents did. It's not a judgment of value, it's just a fact : each culture has its own and particular path to reach universality. So when Trevor Noah says : "why can't they be both ?", well, first, maybe they don't want to ? Here's a reaction from a player himself after hearing about this kind of comment : postimg.cc/image/ivl8mwrst/ And, moreover, I think there's a risk to simply identity. I mean, let's listen to the players themselves : they were singing La Marseillaise spontaneously, not because they reject their origins, but because they were shaped by French culture. M'Bappé said he wanted to represent France, not because he was a narrow-minded nationalist, but maybe to show that one may come from a difficult background and still reach the very top. Maybe he wanted to show these kids who are struggling that they shouldn't resent France and isolate themselves in negativity, but embrace France, as it is a country which believes in meritocracy and where one, if he puts the effort, may succeed despite hardships. Moreover, and the point I am going to make is controversial even in France, there's this idea of "assimilation". I think that this is what the French ambassador meant when he distinguished USA and France. Being French is not a matter of race, but of culture. I guess that this is one of the reasons why a terrorist can lose his nationality : being French is more than just being born in a geographical space, being French is to share certain values, given to us thanks to history, literature, etc. To give a lighter example : when I see a black guy in the street, I don't think "my African brother !". That's simply cultural, I guess. I don't identify people based on their appearance. I won't elaborate because my message is already long enough. To put it quickly, I think that the letter Trevor Noah got from the French Ambassador is a good way to view identity as French people do (with the idea of assimilation, culture, etc). To reduce those players to a color is, to say the least, impolite, I believe. Also, about the two seconds Trevor Noah spent on colonialism : everyone knows how complicated any historical subject is, so let's not throw big words to one another. One of the reasons why I decided to not take the "double nationalities" (that is : to appear Moroccan and French on my administrative papers), is because I didn't want to carry my grandparents' possible resentment towards what France has done in the past (it was not about colonialism in my case, but about migration post-World war II). That doesn't mean I reject my grandparents, it's just that I consider it a chance to live in a country as France and to have the chance to be shaped by its culture (vive Baudelaire !). I decided that I, as an individual, had to establish my own and intimate relation with France, independently of my parents or grandparents history with the country. I know not everyone will agree, that's my choice. So I think that we may want to leave those young players alone : don't make them carry the whole world history just because they are "P.O.C" as I heard some people say. Let's not project our political views on these footbal players. They said they were proud to be French, they said they were happy to make the country proud and happy, especially in this rough context. Finally, and I promise I will shut up : you may think French are "defensive" about those kinds of comments or jokes for no reason, but we have to remember that after the horrible terrorist attacks in Paris, there was the Euro. Our French team deeply wanted to win, because they knew it would finally give us a reason to be on the streets for a happy reason, and not because of terrorists. Unfortunately, they lost. This year, they won the World cup. Trevor Noah himself says context is important : well, the context of these celebrations is that terrorist attacks tried and unfortunately still try to shadow France. This celebration of "Frenchness" is a way to show their failure. Vive la France.

Nice comment. I think it's important that people know that the American way of thinking is not the only way, and the American way to confrot racism is not the only way either. I have the impression that many Americans believe they are the greatest country in the world and that there is less racism than in any other country. I live in Europe myself and I'm not Caucasian. When I see or read about racism in the US, I often think "damn I'm glad that doesn't happen to me, how can the Americans believe their country is less racist and better than the others?" I know that Europe and actually everywhere of the world have racial issues and I acknowledge that America has its own particular progress and success fighting against racism and for civil rights, but that doesn't mean they are better. I have the impression Trevor is saying "I'm glad to be in America, here you can celebrate duality, but in France you can only be French", that is so typical American, ignorant and arrogant.

The problem of this joke and of he's explication is that he didn't get how chocking it can be. The fact is that if the french players, were only italian or romanian migrants, no one would never point this. The only thing that made people say it's Africa's victory is the black skin. This is why it is racism. You can be black, speak only french, having your roots, family friends in one city of France, never been to Africa. You'll get ask about your origin because of the color of your skin. It's been lot of years now since colonialism, we can say that black people, asian people, indian people, arab people is also the face of the France country. And it's not denying the rest, but it's the choice of the citizen to say if he feels both French and Africa, not your choice looking on his skin.

They racially attacked them after missing penalties against Argentina. Just look at this past weekend with Saka from England, comes on as a sub to play against Iceland and all the headlines and photos of criticism were with him on it having only played 25 minutes to close out the game.. Same thing happened to him, Rashford, Sancho after they missed their penalty kicks in the 2020 Euros. Barely any mention of Kane missing the WC penalty against France to tie it up in Qatar. The African players should play with African teams to avoid the backlash. At the end of the day European national/ club teams need Africans and South Americans to win.

Your arguments seem a bit dishonest. You didn`t say France and Africa won the worldcup but Africa only! By saying this you denied them their frenchness and denied the culture of the other players which a different ethnicity. The ambassador said nowhere that they can`t celebrate their African heritage. Its true that France has been suffering for a very long time with its identify, with massive waves of immigration that started after WWII when the country was completely destroyed and needed people to rebuild it. All those people who came to France had suffered to feel integrated and all of them suffered some kind of racism at some point. Even now, after 2 even 3 generations, French people with an African ethnicity still experience racisms when renting flat or interviewing for job. But when France win the world cup, we feel a massive, overwhelming feeling of unity that made us want to praise more than ever our multiculturalism. Its was true already in 98, back then, as a 14 years old teenager with an Arab ethnicity, I never felt more integrated in my country when France won its 1st world cup. I understand Trevor`s point when he said that France only celebrate immigrants and French citizen from immigration only when something positive happen. This is unfortunately very true! But why can`t Trevor just let us celebrate and be proud of our multiculturalism without pointing negativity What disappoint me the most, is that we are telling him that his "joke" insults us, ie French people with all different ethnicities and instead of doing the most decent thing and acknowledge how he made us feel, he tried to divide us again by saying that in France you can only be French and can`t celebrate a different culture. I was a huge fan but won`t be watching him again. Principles matter to me.

Trevor made a mistake, and I agree that his reaction (reading the serious letter from the Ambassador on camera in a funny-voice and doubling down on his mistake) is wrong, but he's from South Africa, a nation which is more split along racial lines than the USA is. As a Hungarian EU citizen I give my support for the French people on this matter and wrote about my personal disagreement with Trevor, but I won't stop watching his show because everyone makes mistakes, although he shouldn't have doubled down on this one. Trevor needs to be invited to France, the EU to be educated about his mistake and not be shunned or 'locked out'.

@sps63745 жыл бұрын
Apart from the fact that this event made him gain sympathy and support and he remained one of the most popular people in the country... I mean WTF ? We were collectively madder at Trézéguet and Materazzi than anyone ever was at Zidane. Off-field, Zidane has a quiet, reserved personality, but he's always been known to be impulsive and hot-tempered whenever a game has high stakes, and he's got quite a record when it comes to being excluded because of angry moves like the infamous Coup de boule (which was NOT his first headbutt in an international competition). But he's not unreasonable, and he's a beloved figure known for his generosity and his dedication to the game, so people assumed Materazzi had gone over the line and there was a nationwide "quest for the truth", with every possible media outlet trying to figure out what Materazzi had said to make the introverted Zidane snap. After it had been found out what Materazzi had said, Zidane was ever more relatable (it was amazing, like a total redemption, it felt like people would have given him martyr status for having been insulted), and Materazzi was Public Enemy #1. There was even a mega summer hit entitled "Coup de boule" ("Headbutt"), and youngsters danced to it all year. That doesn't strike me as the nationwide rejection you seem to imply. I don't know what meme or hashtag you guys saw online, but it was definitely not reflective of the way Zidane was perceived in the country. In 2018, he's still ranking #6 in the "most beloved celebrity in France" list, of which he's been #1 for six years, and always in the top 10 in the last 15 years... fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personnalit%C3%A9_pr%C3%A9f%C3%A9r%C3%A9e_des_Fran%C3%A7ais

The French are called coconuts, hard to get to from the outside but soft once inside. People who make the effort of cracking the shell have no difficulties making good friends. Fake bonds aren't a thing in France either. People won't treat you as a BFF while you're not even acquainted like in some societies. But once you're friends that's genuine. That's a 2 ways thing. I am a German with immigrant parents myself. You aren't completely wrong Trevor but you aren't right either. You neglect their frenchness when you say they are african, like every right wing in Europe. Now the ambassador says they are French and France has a diverse pool of people, he kind of acknowledges their heritage. Your comeback is somehow "why can't they be both". Weird argumentation dude. In the end Trevor it's not up to you or anyone else. They are French by citizenship and it is only up to the individual to embrace their French nationality and their African heritage to whatever extend they want. Nevertheless they won as French people. The experience as an minority is different in Europe. Calling you out as a minority all the time actually divides people and boost prejudices. Pretty sure this is true in the US too. You made a joke and the ambassador shouldn't even send you a letter, yet you doubled down. Imagine the national basketball team of the US would be referred to as the African team.

@Ariana Well, a lot of African Americans or Black Americans would acknowledge both since we are proud of our African ancestry and American nationality. Calling people out as a minority in the US depends, most black people are proud of our identiy (we had a solid 100 year movement that expressed that). Much of our anger comes from a system we believe negatively impacts us (and the occasional racial slur). But being called black doesn't bother most of us, we are proud to be. Also the basketball probs wouldnt care. at the very most you will get some (on the team) who will say it is a win (in two different ways) for America and Africa.

I love Trevor Noah and I rarely rarely comment on KZbin, but damn...this rubbed me the wrong way. I can see his rational and, as usual, his take on this discussion is very well researched. But he missed the point in a very important manner. NO ONE in France is saying some of these players AREN'T of African origin. France is a nation composed of many different cultures and ethnicities. By saying "Africa won the world cup", you reduce the idea that these people AREN'T French. In other words by trying to be witty, Trevor continues the trope that ethnicity is identity and that one can never escape their ethnic label. Its important to teach about history. But never use history and false-equivalencies to drive a wedge between the diverse people of a country. This plays straight into the hands of nationalists and identity politics. It's part of what is dragging down this country, and should never be presented as a truth.
@mumumba6 жыл бұрын
Who is saying this? Because the French ambassador did not say this, it is Traver that is putting words into ambassador's mouth. Also nobody is offended by some French players being of African descent, everyone knows what their descent is and nobody is trying to take that away from them. But what ever their etnicity may be their nationality is French and that is why they are playing for the French national team.
@Lokiomin6 жыл бұрын
Emma, I will have to disagree, no one is asking them to erase their African background. The opposite is being highlighted. The point of the French's argument is that France is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural nation. Saying the cup belongs to a "race" is to say that ethnicities are distinct from one another which is simply untrue. Trevor Noah is trying to make a cheap joke about the origin of the French team in saying that they are African before French. The opposite is true. A nationality will always supersede an ethnicity. The ambassador is right to point this sort of incorrect thinking, as it is this mindset that creates divisions from unity. The multi-ethnicity of the French team should be celebrated instead of being a crude joke.

The problem of Trevor Noah is that he is unable to understand the Universalism of the French point of view, since everything is about race - or origin - for him and the country he emigrated to. In America, except if you are white, you're not just "American", but "African-American" (even if you don't know a single thing about Africa), "Native American", "Hispanic American", "Mexican American", "Asian American", etc. *Even though, I think that it would be pretty offensive, even in the United States, to qualify a black American as "African" as if he was not a true American, or a victory of the US Basket Ball team at the Olympics as a "victory for Africa"...* In the same way, it's quite strange for me when I hear an American on TV saying that he is "Irish" or "Italian" in spite of the fact that his ancestors have been living in America for generations, and that he doesn't have a clue about actual Ireland or Italy. From afar, it does seem that one specificity of American society is the natural ability to divide itself into racial groups which co-exist mainly separately. France's approach is different. Not best, different. It's the approach of an old nation with a strong and unique culture. It may be utopian, but it doesn't officially recognize "races" (racial statistics are forbidden for example), "we're all the same humans", and in order to live together it tries to gather French people of all origins or skin tones around the same culture and set of values. It wants to mold one people, the French people, regardless of races or origins. France has its issues and is not always successful in its endeavor, but when you see the diverse but unified crowd in the Champs-Elysées two days ago, crying of joy and singing La Marseillaise together, it gives some hope, it can be beautiful. France is a multi-racial country (for longer than people often imagine) but it tries not to become too much a multi-cultural one. Something that is very difficult to understand for a lot of Americans, thinking that there is only one way, their way.

I also don't get why Americans refer to themselves as Irish or Italian or African if they were born in the US, raised in the US, the same as their parents, and their grandparents, and their great-grandparents... That means you're AMERICAN, not Irish or Italian or Greek or African. Never got that, never will, because to me it seems like some of these groups are behaving like a parody of the very people in the country they claim to have ties with. They do stereotypical things that have nothing to do with the true culture of a country and then claim they are celebrating that country's culture. No, you're not, you're making a mockery of it and you don't understand what it's like to really live in that country. You're an American. Embrace that. Accept that. Celebrate that. And maybe then you'll get that feeling of togetherness you've been trying to capture for so long.

yeah. I agree. During that whole clip I just kept thinking: This is just one big misunderstanding of each other's concepts of being "French" or "German" or "American" etc. I think in Europe these are primarily used to describe CITIZENSHIP. That's why his joke sounded a lot like those racist ppl who - because of skin colour or immigrant background - don't accept these players (or other immigrants or their children) as french citizens or fully belonging to France. That comes across as: however hard you fight, or even if you are born in that country -- however much you yourself think of yourself as a french citizen -- there are always still people who want to deny you that "frenchness", because of skin colour or ethnic background or cultural background and want to tell you that you don't belong. That's the ongoing discussion. THAT'S the context. He may not understand it, because the context and the wording is different for the US (or South Africa). There you get all these communities and the discussion is about including those communities and having them as equal. That is not the context for why his joke was received so badly. And now he is just insisting on staying within the context he is in, while talking about the importance of context :P His point about being able to be "both" is a good point and it is important. But not the discussion that is being had here right now, I'd say =) The ideal is that all citizens are French, German, Italian, Dutch, ... no matter their descent. They share some values that are maybe reflected by e.g. the constitution (just as a more tangible example) and the rest may be very relevant to you as an individual but not to society from a more collective point of view. That is the context for the WC, because that's its main idea: ppl playing for 'their' country - which they are citizens of.

This is purely a difference in opinion held by two sides. Most likely, in Trevor's culture point of view, in America, people celebrate their diversity, you can call somebody African American - Chinese American - Italian American - Native American - and so on...and it's embracing their "roots"/descent and their American citizenship. And as somebody with that point of view, even though he's not french, but when he sees somebody with "roots"/descent of Africa, he felt kinship and so he say that africa won. Maybe the slightly correct sentence, technically, should be "it's the win of africans descent in the world cup" - because there's also non africans race in the french national team. But saying Africa is the winner is wrong, because all those people are of French Citizenship, hence the country that wins the world cup is France, not Africa. You should try to understand the culture point of view from some of the comments and reply made here from the French people of African descent, and try to understand, instead of just saying that their comments and point of view is wrong. Why? Because they're the ones who lives there and have the citizenships of france, while some of you who only pointing out that is wrong, merely pushing your opinion and culture of what you think is right, based on your life living in US / any other country - in short you're only judging them. Some of the french africans descent said, it's considered rude or racisty to bring up his/her race roots in france, because it would seem like he/she is not french. Hence the terms of african french, chinese french, etc - is commonly used by racist people in france. This is where the blurry part is, because from Trevor point of view, saying African American, is okay, it's a celebration of their duality, whilst for the French, saying African American is racist, because it's saying that they're less American than...well, a white American. And if we debate about it, it's purely a subjective debate. That is why, it is important to hear what the french themselves feel about it. I can relate because it's A BIT similar from where I come from, Indonesia. The bottom line is, the french government is making too big of a fuss, mailing an official statement to one guy of african roots due to his joke/remark. And Trevor is also too much to wanted to get back to the french govt, by relaying his personal opinion to them in a public media, which is that of a national television. Then come, WE, as the nosy internet users who want to say something about this, are flooding the comment section :)

That's because at that time , way before their win , many comments were mocking the players , questionning their legitimacy as french player (twitter, comments on youtube) . As a french with immigrant background I'm actually glad the ambassador did something
@1emti14 жыл бұрын
@@shaynadonovan7684 Thanks for sharing, this is exactly what people need to be aware, racism will still be there for people with immigrant background anywhere (minority vs majority) the point is that those players are of french citizenship, their citizenship has nothing to do with their ethnicity. What the french govt (and many other country elsewhere) need to do is to ensure that they are supporting their own citizen from immigrant background as well. imagine this, instead of sending 1 letter to an individual just to clarify about their statements (where many people are actually saying or thinking the same thing), why not make that letter into a national statement "we are happy for our citizens to win the championship, no matter what is your ethnicity and race background, we are one and united as a nation, as a french people", then do the same thing when their team lose, make a statement that encourage and acknowledge their effort (unless they played really bad without effort) as a your citizen. based on internet search, there're only 5 known race in this world (there's no such thing as a french race) : - Caucasoid race -> it's the white people - Negroid race. -> it's the black people - Capoid race. (i don't know that the f*** is this one, too lazy to read the description) - Mongoloid race. -> it's the asian people - Australoid race. -> aborigine & papuan people by end of the day, this talk happens because the conclusion i said in my comment above : Trevor said a remark in his kinship as a Negroid Race, whilst the french govt took offense since they felt Trevor's comment insinuating that these people are not French, but Africans instead. Then we as internet user adding comments from our social point of view about racism and social things that happens in our daily life. another example, in general we associate the real citizen of a country based on the majority, so when we said somebody is french/ americans/ irish/ british, we will link their citizenship with the dominant race, in this case the Caucasoid (caucassian / white people), where we forgot that there is also a negroid (black people) / mongoloid (asian) / australoid (aborigine&papuan) people who are also of french/americans/irish/british citizens. And generally nowadays, when people ask where does white people (caucasoid/caucassian) comes from? they will say US / UK / Europe. But for the sake of arguments, let's just say that they come from UK (since lot's of colonialization back then). So if an australian team, with mostly white people as their players won the world cup (regardless of their ethnicity/culture/immigrant background - might be irish, italian, french, british, american, germans, etc), then due to kinship of being white (caucasoid), could one say "it's an England win!"? so hopefully, everyone could be a better person and treat our fellow countryman equally no matter what their background / race / ethnicity is

Puerto Rico is a US territory, but Puerto Ricans, while technically citizens, are still deprived of many rights that citizens in the mainland US get to enjoy (they can't vote for president, for example). So yeah, there's still a pretty big difference, not to mention the issues of identity and culture that Nat brought up.
@ayjaybay936 жыл бұрын
Puerto Ricans are US citizens, but they do have a very unique culture different from the United States’ mainstream culture which is what I think Trevor was referring to. Puerto Rico would still have their unique culture even if the US had never claimed it as a territory. It’s why Puerto Rican Day is celebrated all over the mainland by people of Puerto Rican descent, and there’s a concept of a person being of Puerto Rican descent or descent of any of the other US territories. The same concept doesn’t apply for US states. They are Americans with their own unique culture independent of America.

The thing is that, In his initial joke Trevor didn't say that the team was "French-African" or "African-French", he said that Africa won the world cup. I'm of African descent and I'm proud of my origins, and I'm indeed both French and African and I recognise myself in these players, but I was raised in France, and whether it's Trevor saying I'm not French to hype up Africa, or a racist from an Alt-right party, they're both denying me the right to call myself French.

J-H P it really doesn't matter what people think. If someone who feels being French ain't shit when your African its their issues but don't let it be a reason you cant claim your African / French culture. Its the insecurity in you that makes it a problem. I'm African but I am also american which is the same as you being African French and I would never be upset with someone calling African although I'm in America.
@metalwarrior76796 жыл бұрын
I love Trevor Noah but to be honest it is not an original joke. As a French person I've heard that joke so many times coming from far right activists. And that is the reason why this "joke" became so controversial. We usually insist on the fact that they are French over African not because we do not recognize their African origins but mostly because they play for France and not for Africa.
@aspenanderson22906 жыл бұрын
This has even more nuance than Trevor is giving it credit for. I taught college-level history classes for many years and taught many students about the negative effects of colonialism. Trevor is still creating his arguments and justifications from a viewpoint informed by both the culture of Apartheid and the culture of American race relations. The very fact that people of African descent are allowed to become "French" means that race relations and the colonial structure developed differently than either South African or American colonialism. Irish people were allowed to assimmilate and "become" American (more easily on the West Coast where they could assert their whiteness over the Chinese). Native Americans were believed to be able to assimmilate into white culture. Blacks were not. Their blackness excluded them from the chance to assimmilate, and so in America (and similarly in South Africa between the different racial groups) the desire to cling to the African identity is much more strong than, say the Irish desire to cling to their heritage (getting wasted once a year is not exactly a resounding signal you are proud of your heritage). The strength of this desire to find historical identity and pride is informing Trevor's argument, but the Ambassador is 100% right. The constant focus and desire to create hyphenations for people based on their skin color or ancestral heritage is a double-edged sword. While it can create a sense of identity, it also creates opportunity for divide, and it is human nature to turn against the Other. Trevor is insisting that it is necessary to have those hyphenations in order to maintain that historical identity, and that is absolutely not true. The hyphenation does not define how you identify with your historical culture, the way you honor it does. And many people who leave their ancestral homes are eager to adopt their new home as their identity, and God knows I would be, too. The fact that France allows this to happen regardless of where you come from is a distinctly different dynamic and a much healthier one than what the U.S. allows. Trevor says he can accept criticism but he is doing Olympic-level mental gymnastics to discount this extremely valid opinion he received. The Ambassador was 100% right that Trevor is reinforcing the underpinning nuances that keep race relations tense in this country.
@TheLastInferno6 жыл бұрын
Aspen Anderson I did not take into consideration the crucial difference in how race relations evolved over time in regards to America and South Africa versus France which has me now scrutinizing Trevor's point in how he appreciated the US's claim to having her people keep the identity of the old as they mix with their new society. Since race relations developed differently, while the US may see it as a positive, that doesn't mean that the French have to see it as a positive as well. Instesd they see the dominance of French identity as a positive for beetter societal cohesion. But, by the same token, it would be wrong to call the ambassador 100% right. We have established that both countries see different opposite viewpoints as positive, and this is due to, as you said, how race relations evolved over time in both countries. Meaning, that most people in the US do agree with Trevor that they appreciate the hyphenated identity and most French people agree with the ambassador that they like the one homogeneous identity. Therefore, does it not come to personal preference? Of course, there are positions and negatives to both claims (i.e. you have called Trevor's POV a double edged sword and given reasons) however it comes down to what empowers the people and, as such, mindset matters. Personally, I agree with either but give more weight to the hyphenated identity. And not to blindside too much, but religion is also part of identity. So, I believe that the double edged sword of the hyphenated identity can be remeidied if all those identities become of one religion. When there is one religion, they will all be called by that religion and as such have the same identity and as such be united. Meanwhile, their national identities will take a backseat as a source of appreciation. At least, that is what I believe a utopia looks like where identity politics will lose all toxicity.

Taking in the people on what they do (climb up save a kid) and not where they have come from, merit over lineage any 'meritorious institution' would want its subjects to have certain traits and follow certain rules, decorum if you may call it, as assimilating to the ethos of the institutions, keep your identity no problem with it, honor it cherish it, but be clear stern and singular of who you are at this very moment. I mean, if you can identify someone as an african french, then you can make specific laws for or against that group. I know it's is the way americans are using but it goes against the N°1 rule of french constitution : "La France est une République indivisible, laïque, démocratique et sociale. Elle assure l'égalité devant la loi de tous les citoyens sans distinction d'origine, de race ou de religion..." "France is an undivided, laic, democratic and social republic. It assures equal law treatement for every citizen without any distinction of ORIGIN, RACE or religion." No distinction means that no matter what, we are, or at least should be, stricly equal. France integrates various cultures very well. It is very rich in that regards. But you can't just say african french, or black french. I just goes against what precisely make people french.

Hi, I'm french, and I would like to give you some context. This situation is actually a big problem in France, where the far right is having more and more pull in how France works. So calling them an African team just because they are black, that is what is perceived as racist, it is even an argument used by Italy to insult those players. The issue here is not denying their African origins, the issue is because their parents are African they have no place in France. That is what was perceived, not just by what you said, but all the ultra soccer fans who were disappointed to lose used this as an insult. That is all. It's just wrapped in big words, but that's the gist of it. =)

@Alohajeje6 жыл бұрын
juhoi1 I did hear him out, I watched the whole video before posting my comment. He does indeed address this situation of extreme racism in France. For a few seconds. And my comment's purpose was not to invalidate Trevor Noah's opinion, but to share the mindset of french people. He says those players should be proud of their African heritage, and sure they should be, but in France where "go back to Africa" is a often used occurrence, you can understand why it was wrongly perceived. Telling someone who is French, who has french nationality that he is African just because he (or she) is black is an insult in France. Even if they are proud to have an African culture from whatever country their parents where from, it is a basic truth. From the kindergarten or even before that, it is used as an insult. And Trevor Noah is not French, he is South African living in the USA. He can read about it but he's not living the situation. He's probably faced racism in his life of course, I don't deny that. So just by joking that Africa won the World Cup, he participated unwillingly and unknowingly in insulting those players, and France. So a response from the ambassador, while a little extreme since it is only just football after all, is pretty logical.

Aunt Isthenes I don't understand your comment. I never said it was ok to tell people to go back to where they came from, I am disagreeing with Trevor Noah and his opinion. @7thquark3094 жыл бұрын
Trevor, that's a sharp analysis. However, as you said the context is key: this joke had already been used several times by right extremists, to criticize the number of African immigrants in the country. It's interesting because all the brazilian players was born in Brazil and they suffer because their color, it is not a question of origin, because they're brazilians since many generations, it's a case of color, that comes since slavery. I say this because the descendents of italians, portugueses and even the lebaneses are not suffering any racism or xenophobia and they have also the citizenship and they're pround of this. It's a thing that reflects in the skin's color, in the brazilian case because of the past, because of the slave origins and this is really sad in a country like Brazil that was made by natives' genocide and slavery.
