I’m Haitian American and actually during the Haitian Revolution Napoleon sent French soldiers and among them were also polish soldiers as well. My parents are Polish expats, but most of my family still lives in Poland. I'd been there a few times, even went to school there for a year. I think the "realness" you're feeling is in the culture. You'd likely feel that in any country that has a deeply rooted heritage and culture. As far as America as a whole, I think it's still going through growing pains. These other countries, like Poland, they're very old. Someone came up with the traditions and the folklore before they became traditions and folklore. Metaphorically speaking, America is like a teenager. The ego is still very much there, and it is so much more focused on its facade, like the layers you say people here have, while it's trying to figure out who it is. It's going to take time. Like, a few hundred more years probably. And it's probably going to go through a lot more painful history like other countries have, because it's those experiences (like the stories you mention of what people lived through) that make it more "real." So yes, for now, it's still very much manufactured and superficial. America has to try things on and see what fits, discard what doesn't. Eventually, it will have a much stronger foundation, a deeper culture. The people here will be more refined, with more complex stories. (Velveteen Rabbit could also be compared to this, becoming real takes love and time.) Poland went through similar things, lol. If you look at the dress of nobles, did you notice the inspiration from the middle east? It comes from Sarmatism, because the Polish nobles believed they were descendants of legendary Iranian Sarmatians, which of course gave them a false sense of superiority over the rest of the Polish people over which they lorded, and they dressed the part. Poland was young compared to this other ancient civilization and their cultures. This inspired art and stories that later became cultural classics. Other aspects of the culture (as well as cultures of other countries) were passed back and forth, adapted, absorbed, and so on. This goes on in America now, as we call the melting pot. Various cultures move here and contribute to the vastness of American culture as a whole. It's still going through its phases of figuring out what it wants to keep. It would be interesting to look into the future at a time when America is old, and see what the stories and traditions and architecture are then. I do agree with you on the point of food and plastics - hopefully people learn to move away from poisoning themselves here for the sake of convenience. I love hearing about people who don't have past ties falling in love with the country. It's a beautiful place, and I really do miss it. I don't think it's better or worse than America, there's just no comparison really. Both are good. Home is where the heart is, mine is just split between two countries half a world apart.

Trev, our history is not that inspiring for us as for foreigners, as we got used to it and we hear about it since very first history lesson in the school. Ofc we still remeber what our nation went through, but from the other side because of all that happened in the past our lives are not as good as we want em to be, as it could be if that stuff from before wouldnt happen at all. If you will study our history a little more, you will find out that many decisions taken in the past were mistakes, but it requires deep searching and social-economic look on that events rather than patriotical-historical look. Being affected with communism by Soviet Russia left a lot of deep wounds in our society, in our politicians that rule our country and set the law. Polish politic is a difficult topic, that requires many hours of explanation, with all the historical connections - many of the polish people are not aware of it, but that's the thing that affect our lives.
@kalkol213 жыл бұрын
Or is it that because of these "our mistakes in the past" we are so interesting to people from other countries? If, for example, in the 18th century we would not have such personal freedom, we would not lose our independence but we would not be so attractive to foreigners ... Once I met a girl from the UK who felt bad because of colonialism ... I suggested her to compare the current standard of living in countries that were English colonies and countries that weren't English colonies ... After a brief reflection, she told me that I was right ... Yes it's true, there are good and bad decisions made in the past but it's really hard to judge ...

I mean - yeah, it is pretty common for an American to be more happy in Poland... or basically any EU country than in US, as it is a tremendous improvement. We have public transportation, studying is [almost]free, there is free healthcare for all [at least for basic necessities, cancer and common diseaases] nad the food is still food not plastic.... But what you really forget is your priviledge - you are white, hetero male a.k.a. what our current political force sees as the finest citizen. If you are a woman, not-white, non-catholic, LGBTQ+ or handicaped - you are screwd. You cannot decide on your own body or reproductive laws, you will not be tretaed equally and you will face massive bullying. As a woman, neurodivergent, with several ilnesses and LGBTQ community member - I often feel Poland is a shithole. Not a hell on Earth - since I could end up in a war zone, like Kongo or Afghanistan or Iraq... but still. Poland is very homogenous country & stuck in old roman-catholoc traditions, that are oftentimes outdated and not fair. But it has good sides. Like everything. Summarizing - for a white cis-person with good health - yes, Poland is great place to live. If you are PoC, LGBTQ, neurodivergent or severly ill or a woman who does not want children - pick another place in EU.
